Yes... because beating a dog for its entire life won't come back to bite you (no pun intended, but pain is) in the end.

"I've been running my GPU at 100% capacity twelve straight hours a day every day for the past six months and it broke. I demand a new one!"

You'd be laughed out of the Apple Store.

just say that you were folding at home.

I dont think its fraud, having a demo of game running for hours. If it should work the way it's supposed to there wouldn't be a problem. I can run my GeForce 4 Ti4800 SE for hours and its still good. It's a 5 year old card. With these 8600s they're not getting far from 3 years (allegedly)

Apple's refurbs go through a "burn in" before being sold. Whatever that means.

edit: if this was intel's problem, and that Core 2 Duos were failing due to a defect...how would you feel if you couldn't do anything intensive to it, or leave it on 24/7 which a lot more people do? How about all those people truly folding @ home?

also this problem is supposedly caused by the expansion and contraction of heating cycles in powering on and off. Which means technically running a demo for hours wouldn't do a thing...technically.

Good thing I don't play many games. I'm a bit worried now tho. I've been worried in fact, since this is my first Apple computer ever. I used to be a loyal Windows user until I set my hands on a Macbook. Still very worried tho. I need to buy AppleCare very soon.

If you have a Macbook you are ok, it does not have an nVidia GPU. Macbooks use integrated Intel GPU 950 or x3100. i believe only the Santa Rosa or later Macbook Pros have them and while there is great speculation as to how widespread the problem is, most people have not had a problem.

Cheers,

Exactly, but running a demo for hours isn't what the OP did, it was running the demo to crank up the heat then slamming the thing cold by sleeping it. Leaving your Nvidia on 24/7 doesn't cause the cycling of hot/cold so that should be fine.

I play WoW a lot on 15" Macbook Pro. No problems but vertical striping (which has gone away dramatically since ive booted up in safe mode once).

i look at it this way. my mbp is just over a year old and i did not purchase apple care. if my graphics card goes belly up for no apparent reason (i do not stress my laptop), then i will NOT purchase another apple computer. pretty simple! knock on wood... i have had zero problems.:D

Sadly it is a Macbook Pro.

I dont get why people dont just buy a notebook cooler ?
Wouldn't that avoid any of this??
I hate stating the obvious but no one else has im wondering why...wouldnt this help?

Most people arent stupid enough to close a MBP thats at 70C+, instead letting the fans run at 6000RPM for abit to cool it down to 50Cish, then shut it down. Would only take a couple minutes.

I know this thread is over 2 years old. But If I put my laptop to sleep, and it is running very hot, the fans should remain on until the system is cooled. The laptop isn't completely off unless you shut it down. Sleep is just a lower power state. So thats what happens when Apple ****s up.

I think it's fine, or even beter to put it directly to sleep... With the fans off, the GPU cools down more slowly which is better for the solder joints...
The fans actually increase thermal stress. They are only there in order to keep the GPU below its critical temperature.

Fraud? Jesus. The amount of as$ kissing that goes on here never ceases to amaze me. It's like Apple can do no wrong. What about consumer rights? Working people who pay top dollar for a machine can't expect a billion dollar company to replace it if there is a design flaw? Really? In that case, I hope all of you brown-nosing fanboys see your computers fail right after your warranty expires.

What an unbelievably painful thread!!! Ignorance everywhere!!!

Anyway, you all are blaming Apple like they knew this was going to happen. The only company at fault here is Nvidia. Both Mac and PC machines are equally plagued by this.

Thank you! This is the only sensible post here.

You bought a MacBook Pro made by Apple. They chose what to stick in, it's their problem. We take our laptops back to Apple. Apple can then sue NVIDIA if needed to pay for the replacement logic boards.

Apple have a NVIDIA motherboard replacement program. I've had mine replaced once, out of warranty, for free. I suggest if yours fails too, you take advantage of this as well.

HE DID IT 25 TIMES IN A ROW.

So? I game in boot camp for hours, even all day non-stop sometimes, when I have nothing else to do. I often put my laptop to sleep, or turn it off, when it's still hot. And I've certainly done it more than 25 times in the last few months.

NVIDIA have agreed to replace affected logic boards, so if the OP wants to be intentionally missing his computer for a week while Apple replaces the board, that's his problem. As the OP is using the computer as it was intended to be used, it's stupid to even consider it as fraud.

And please quit the analogies. They always suck, and can easily be made to push any point.

EDIT: Just realised this thread is 2 years old. Kind of frustrating, but points still valid.

didint apple co desing the gpu spisificly for MBP with invidia?? making the problam partly apples fault. also macs are desinged for media intensive aplications so should b desinged for continuse use under extreme sircumstances.

No. Only the 320M is non-standard. The 8600M GT (which is what this thread is about) is available on a number of non-Apple machines.

The problem is not Apple's fault in the slightest, and they have done a fantastic job replacing damaged boards with new ones.

The spelling in this post amazes me. Consider learning to spell before you continue to post.

Lol, the grammar is almost OK, as is the punctuation. Considering some of the posts we get on this forum, that was good! At least it can be understood.
