Strong-arming AT&T into offering me unlimited iPad data...

OP: Hi, I have an AT&T and I'd like unlimited data. I have it on my iPhone, and I want it on my iPad also.
CSR: We don't offer that plan. But we can offer you...

CSR: I'm happy that you have an iPad 2, but we don't have unlimited data.

CSR: So you have an iPhone with an unlimited data plan, and an AT&T iPad 2, and you're just going to get rid of all that because I won't bend the rules to give you a nonexistent plan? How about I give you a call if we decide to offer it later?

I just talked to AT&T and they grandfathered me in with an unlimited iPad 2 dataplan. I basically told them that I have the unlimited plan for my iphone 3gs and I ordered an ipad 2 from AT&T, however I recently just bought a Verizon iPad 2 and have it in hand. I said if they would grandfather me I would return my Verizon iPad and wait for my AT&T to arrive. It was REALLY easy. No sales manager involved at all.

Did you get something in writing? What they tell you is worth about the same as the cost of the call. nada. I called ATT and asked general questions about the transfer of my exisitng iPad Unlimited Plan and the guy said no, ATT does not allow transferring the Unlimited Plan to the ipad2.
He seemed pretty clueless. ATT has a press release stating the opposite.

Well, you guys are right. I have been mislead. I had them send me something in writing (it tool an hour to send it to me) and of course they send me an email stating that the information provided over the phone needs to be verified and that they are looking into my request.
I am currently on the phone with them arguing, but it looks like a dead end. Trying to dig around to see if there are any other promotions or discounted data plans lurking around.

You can still transfer your ipad unlimited plan to ipad 2. I just confirmed this with the manager I am speaking to.
No strong arm needed. I am speaking with a woman from ATT and since I have been on the Unlimited with my iPhone since 2007 on the original iPhone she has offered me 6gigs for 60, I told her I appreciated the offer but that is in line with what VZW offers price wise for 10gigs.
Put me on hold again to see if she can grandfather in the iPad for unlimited now...
It has been nothing more than a very calm and respectful conversation. No need to to anything but ask and be nice about it. I'm guessing competition will allow them to bend the rules for those of us who have been long time Unlimited users. Will find out here shortly I guess.

I am being told they cannot do unlimited for the iPad because of a "contract" with Apple. I am still digging around on the phone. $100 credit is not going to convince me to stay with AT&T.

No, simply meaning if you ask nicely they are working on a solution. I have been on the phone with two different people, the CSR and her manager at this point who basically agreed they needed to offer unlimited to those with the history of use and the history of an iPhone unlimited plan. Finding a way to implementbthat is what he is looking for.
They may think their company needs to offer an additional service but it's an entirely different matter if they are indeed able to offer that service.
In the current structure they are unable to do that.
Nothing about that was mentioned, and no credit was offered as I wasn't telling them I was leaving. Just asking if the option of grandfathering in on the iPad was possible since I am on my iPhone. At this point no unlimited plan was offered but they did offer a $60 for 6gigs iPad plan was offered if I added it on my phone service plan. If it was primarily used for "work" and made me money I would do that, but it's more for entertainment purposes so I"ll just stick to the JB/MyWi and deal with the battery life issues for now. I'm even tempted to go the "official" tether route at 45 for 4 gigs which is only a 15 increase, but I can save 10 bucks if I drop both our iPhones to 1000 texts plan at 10 each vs the unlimited at 30. Overall 5 gain and don't have to keep jacking with the issues of a JB phone.
Eventually they will figure it out, Web 2.0 and all the social media, streaming video's etc... are not going to expand to the mobile space with 2 gig caps. It will be interesting to see how VZW brings LTE online across the country. I"ll pay for unlimited LTE if they offer it via phone tether or mifi device this fall if it comes to KC.

I talked to them about how I've been an iPhone customer for a long time and explained how I had the original plan and sold it but now I have the iPad 2. The AT&T CSR talked to the supervisor on my behalf and they made the change.
I logged into cellular data on my iPad 2 and the option to change my plan to unlimited data was there. AT&T CSR's can be very helpful.
