I am really torn between the regular SS and the Space Black treatment, the Space Black looks so good, but I really want a classic buckle with the DLC accents. To me, the Leather Loop just isn't an option and for the future, I feel I should maybe stick to the regular SS version for potential watch band purchases in gen 2. I just don't know! They have given me too long to think about it.

I think for this first gen model, the smart purchase is the aluminum. The SS, by the time you get a leather or Milanese band, is a $700 watch, that we might be then replacing in a year or two. I think it's smart to get the $400 aluminum, and then maybe dress it up with a fancier band if needed. Then you can still keep the bands when you upgrade, and just keep switching out the watch part.

I can't help but wonder if Apple intentionally allowed this much time between the keynote and the pre-order date so that we had plenty of time to ponder these things and sway towards the pricier SS models. On the day of the keynote I was 100% convinced I'd go with the 42mm Space Gray aluminum watch but the more I look at these pictures, videos, and compare watch materials, the more I feel like I'm going to end up with a SS model.

This will set you back at least $150 which makes it a $550 watch. I figure if I'm going to spend over $500 I may as well go with the SS.

I'm leaning towards the SS with Leather Loop as well as a black Sport Band. This sets me back $750 (ouch!) but I feel it's worth the extra $200. I will be wearing it every day and want the screen to hold up to the daily grind.

This more than anything its what causes me to go back and forth. If I get the Space Grey Aluminum and get the leather loop, I'm already in a $550, which isn't all that far away from the SS model.

I think this is going to play a lot like the iPhone 6 vs. 6+ model. Tons of people (myself included) will be making proclamations on what the best model is/isn't, and it will all get thrown out the window once people get a chance to see, touch, and feel these devices when they come out.

It's a lot of fun discussing in the interim though.

except that iPhone 6+ model isn't at 10,000 dollars. which I can very easily proclaim that Apple Watch Edition is the worst value Apple has ever put out there.

Anyone else see sawing back and forth between choosing the Aluminum (space grey for me) or Stainless Steel model?

I think the Stainless Steel model will be more versatile, but I worry about how much it will weigh and comfortability vs. the Aluminum model. Then again, I can get the Aluminum model, dress it up with the leather band I want, and still save $100.

I think the answer will ultimately come to trying them both on in the store ahead of time, but in the interim, I am really going back and forth.

The stainless steel isn't as heavy as you may think.

The Plastic Pebble watch weighs 38g.
The Stainless Steel Apple watch weighs 40g.
A traditional watch like my Omega weighs 65g.

So you buy things because of what others will think and not what you like? The shame of having something someone else has!! That's sad.

It's a piece of jewelry...a fashion statement. You're essentially wearing it as a declaration to others because you care at least somewhat how you are perceived by them.

Jony Ive understood this, and that is why the watch was approached in this way. Not many people care if they carry an identical phone in their pockets as other people. But if you're wearing something on your body, such as a watch, you want it to be somewhat unique and a representation of your own personal taste and style. And it kinda kills the feeling if you see everyone with the same watch...

I've been flip flopping as well. I was going to get the silver aluminum and get a black band for it. Doing so would give me 1 band I don't want and for 150 more I can get the SS with the option of a milanese strap later.

I'm going with silver aluminum that way I can get pretty much any band I want. Plus I'm not gonna spend $600+ on gen 1.

Except only the sports band and the leather loop are the only bands that will aesthetically work with the sport model. Not only will there be a mismatch between any other bands and the watch, there is also a chance of corrosion.

I didn't think Silver corroded? Well, save Gold, I'm sure any metal can corrode, but I wasn't under the impression that Aluminum was very corrosion prone? Am I wrong here? Surely there is a metallurgist and or chemist among us :D

There is no 'silver' watch. There is aluminium, stainless steel or gold. I'm pretty sure there are a few threads regarding mixing stainless steel and aluminium which may risk in corrosion. I'm sure someone else knows more than me though :)

From the moment I saw the stainless I thought "that's the one for me!" It was beautiful. After hearing the prices,I thought apple lost their minds.
Then after seeing real life pictures, there no other choice but SS for me.

Am I happy about the price? No,but what can I do? I'll wear it everyday. So I'll pay the 699.99 and get it with the black leather band. That way I can wear it with suits or whatever I choose. I'll also buy a black sports band for the gym.

The sucky part is I'll be buying the black SS for my fiancé too. I just don't think the watch will be as fun if I'm not able to interact in those intimate ways (drawing smoky faces and sending your pulse) with the person I communicate the most with.

Another note. Some people are thinking about saving on the first gen. I have a question, how long are you willing to wait? Who knows the timeline of this watch. ATV has been on this version for 3 years. So has the iPod touch.

I say, if it won't put you in a financial hardship, get the one your heart desires.

Yeah, meant to say aluminum there. Not sure where Silver came from :D

My original point/question stands though. I didn't think Aluminum was prone to rust/corrosion.

Space gray is too similar to silver, for me.

If I bought one, I'd get silver. Looks more iconic. Stainless black looks the best, but I wonder if it's durable.

I was at first but after seeing the amount of bands and choice for the SS I'm now really certain on the SS with bright blue Leather Loop and a couple of sport bands as extras (white and black) also the fact that the SS will be more durable has also helped.

I'm loving the leather loop and SS. It's such an attractive combo. It's tough to decide.

Well, like I said, by the time you buy the SS with a band other than rubber, you're at $700 + tax for only one strap. And may end up having to chuck it next year for whatever comes out. I guess it's just my personal opinion, but I'm not willing to go ahead and commit to a $700+ watch purchase every year, not gonna happen. I'm already purchasing an iPhone every year, and an iPad every year. But I may be able to swing changing out the watch part every year or every other year for $399. But those of you who have $700 to throw at this every year, go right ahead, more power to you.

Also, the aluminum on this is heavily coated, I don't think we're talking about any corrosion here, lol. Also, if you didn't notice, the link band doesn't exactly match the SS watch either, the link band is brushed, not shiny like the watch. So I don't think Apple intended for bands that have a shiny finish to be used only with the SS.

That's perfect because I'm getting a black sport band and blue leather loop :)

Talk to one of the apple store clert today, and he has been train on the AW. He told me the sport band will only work with the AW sport, and the other bands will not work with the AW sport. Then my wife was like, then why does the sport band comes with the regular SS if they are not interchangeable? He goes good question let me get back to u on that. Came back out and said the same thing. So the question that my wife ask still wasn't answered. He also said I will be able to get the space black SS with a sport band if I want to when I preorder. If this is true then I am thinking about doing that. I really like the SS black.

Hmm, I wonder if he meant you could buy a sport band for your black SS, but you'd have to buy it with the black SS link, meaning $1100.

If sport band can go on either SS or aluminum, but aluminum can't take on the other bands then there's something unique about the aluminum watch that blocks out the other SS bands? It doesn't seem likely, but I suppose it's possible. Unlikely IMO for the extra design work just to block out other links?? I think the mismatch look would be good enough to deter people from getting SS bands to use on aluminum, although aluminum and the leather bands work IMO.

I waited six years until I purchased the top of the line iphone because I was waiting for technology to mature to a point. I'll most likely buy the next few generations to enjoy it, but it'll be bottom or near bottom of the line until I invest onto the upper end of the spectrum.

I just feel like it's worth the wait until the technology justifies the higher end price :p

The AW training manual was leaked and out in the open, and we can inform you he didn't quite tell you the entire story. The bands will work with all collections but they may not match aesthetically and possibly from a galvanic corrosion standpoint. He meant you'll be able to get the sport band separately in addition to the link bracelet that comes out of the box with Space Black SS.

What to do? What to do?

This is so the thing that has gone through my mind. First, I was set on the black SS. However, no other band options except the $449.00 blk SS. Then it was to the grey aluminum. However, only black options work in my opinion. Now I am thinking the SS with the Mil, and possible a sport or leather band. Oddly,Mitch is my wife that wants me to get the watch, and the Mil was her first thought, and I said no at first. 3 of my 4 other watches are SS so that is why I was thinking Blk. I will not order before going to the store on the 10th. Making my 15 min appt on the first for the morning of the 10th.

I am not an equip replacer. I replaced my iPad 1 with iPad Air 2 the day they came out. Still using iPhone 5c.

Yeah that's what I thought at first, until he showed me this page Hmmm.
