I dont know about you, but when I press on setting and then general, there is no network button.

If you haven't hacked it, it will not be there..and in order for it to show up, you must have one(or more?) of the iPhone apps over, we think it is mail, but no one knows which app actually adds it yet..

Sadly it doesn't work for me and a lot of people are saying that it stays connected for about 10 seconds then goes out..so I don't know what is going on with it.

this is great and i hope it works and apple does something! my uni currently has wifi that isn't supported by the touch. i contacted the tech depo and they said there really wasn't anything they could do because the touch doesn't have the support i need :mad:

Yea, my tech dept said the same thing. I asked them if they had plans to create a network for devices for the touch and iPhone and they said "we do not support the iPhone and iPod touch."

i guess thats why we need to get on apple's case because its obvious that the universities aren't going to budge on the topic, which is said because i can't use my beautiful new toy except for music which i enjoy the most but being able to go online during classes would just be the icing on my cake!

Add me to the list too. Way better though, I live in Canada and when I took my touch to ITS they said "the iPhone isn't available in Canada so we won't be supporting it. Sent in my feedback form 2 weeks ago!!

At least you guys have WEP or something.. My school (University of Toledo, 3rd largest school in Ohio) uses LEAP..

BIG problem

Hi, haven't bought an iPod Touch because of this. It is a even bigger problem in Europe because most universities are part of the eduroam network (http://www.eduroam.org/) which requires EAP-TTLS/PAP support.

It's pretty cool because with my account from my local university I can access all wireless networks of participating universities (and this are nearly all universities in EU countries and Australia). It would be cool if there would be a media story about this problem to increase pressure on Apple to provide support.

Although Nokia devices don't support it ;)

Well thanks for the story. It's always good to get a post like this, so people can realize what the REAL situation is. I might be attending school in Europe this coming summer and not having iPT work, would suck bad.

Thanks and send feedback! :D

So, any word on the streets? I got nothing, hahaha.

I don't get how the media didn't catch on to this. I mean we're talking about a good (i'm assuming) percentage of people that are stuck without WiFi at their university and or workspace because of this authentication problem.

I'm looking at YOU MacRumors! Hit 'em up! Push the issue! ;):p:D

Yea! Come on Macrumors, post an article about how we need 802.1x wifi on the touch! I heard it is already built into the touch, it just has to be activated. Is this true?

you can setup a vpn from ur ipod in settings>general>network

Try it out and see if it works

Ok I sent a email to my uni's helpdesk asking what I need to put into the vpn settings in the touch and i got no help.
As of now, there is no method of implemeting wireless on the Ipod touch as all wireless networks at QUT use the 802.1x authentication system which is not used by IPod touch. Currently, technical personnel are testing to see the feasability of connecting the ipod touch to QUT network.
So I hope 802.1x is implemented into the touch very soon. What are the chances of it being on the update that i due in few days?

Anyways after a search of my uni website, I found out i can still access wifi via vpn. This is what the site had:
Create VPN connection (IPSec/L2TP) connection to 10.0.0.2
Use pre-shared key of "qutaccess"
Login with your QUT-Access username and password.

In the vpn settings on the touch, what is the propper place I should put everything?

Server
Account
RSA ecurID
Password
Secrete
Proxy

With the above info, I have:
-connection to 10.0.0.2
-pre-shared key of "qutaccess"
-my uni username
-my uni pw

Where should I be putting everything, I have tried few combos, but nothing works.

It has to be Mail because none of the other iPhone apps add any prefrance panes (except the ones that use the phone hardware, but whats the point of putting them on a Touch?)

Server = ipsec.<insert company name/schoolname>.<.com,.edu>
Account = Your UNI username
Password = Your UNI password
Shared secret = qutaccess
Proxy = 10.0.0.2

Check a box saying to send all traffic via that connection

FYI -- I have never known a VPN to work with all internet websites...a VPN is usually used if you want access to specific network sites that other people would otherwise have no access to. For example at my university, anything with "indiana.edu" is blocked unless you are connected via VPN.

The iPhone/iTouch only support PTPP and L2TP VPN and not native IPSEC. This is a major problem as generally only those sites using M$ Windows servers for VPN use these (and PTPP doesn't work through NAT anyway).

To connect to Cisco concentrators you need IPSEC with xauth authentication (not to be confused with the X window system XAUTH protocol).
