It makes me wonder if the display could add some additional M1 only features on Intel Macs, like the 3D globe view, and extracting text from images...

Can anyone try this? That would be amazingly cool of Apple; maybe something they can bring in an update.

Getting ready to hit the order button on this display and a mac Mini. This will be kind of a handy feature for certain things. I'm often asking Siri (on my phone or tablet) to set reminders, send simple e mails, and such when I'm not right at my computer. If one is worried about privacy, listening-in, etc. they probably shouldn't own a smartphone or tablet anyway, or put the clamp on those preferences.

Your feature request of the Studio Display just reminded me of the SEGA Genesis + 32X add-on from the 90s which brought 32-bit power to the 16-bit Genesis.

This is a risky strategy on Apple's part. How many former Alexa and/or Google users will switch over to Siri because of the new support... only to be reminded of just how far superior those services are to Apple's still-pathetic offering. When we consider that Alexa is three years younger, and Google Assistant is five years younger, Apple's lagging behind its competitors so badly after being first to market is beyond embarrassing. Let's hope Apple isn't counting on Siri to provide hands-free driving for AppleCar!

It was reported that the Studio display itself has 64GB of storage. Man it's like having a giant ipad but not an ipad...

You think it’s risky for Apple to include a feature in a monitor because people might not like it as much as some other company’s offerings? I don’t understand how those are related at all. If they sell a good display, and people like it, then that’s a win, right?

Let’s face it, if someone’s Mac is that old, chances are, they’re not going to fork over $1,600 for a monitor to use siri… heck, if my Mac was that old, I’d upgrade to a MBA and get a comparable LG 4K monitor, all for less than the price of this display.

Me: "Hey Siri, is my new Apple monitor listening in on my conversations?"

Monitor: "Of course not. What gave you that idea?"
"Well, I don’t think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error." -- HAL 9000.

Yeah... Apple is no doubt saying "Oh noes, what will we do?"

Why didn't they just slap an M1 Pro in this thing, 16 GBs of RAM and call it a day? Its thick enough!

It even looks like the concepts/renders that many hoped for on a new 27" iMac (no chin)

Instead it gets an A chip for "hey Siri", "wide angle/tracking FaceTime" and "spatial audio"

yay?

One interesting note on this... If you connect a new "closed" MacBook Pro to the Studio Display, it prevents "Hey Siri" from working ?‍♂️. Hopefully it gets fixed in an update to be smart enough to know that the Studio Display can handle it when connected with the lid closed.

I wonder if this is a bug caused by the whole physical microphone shutoff when the lid is closed.

I use my MacBook Pro Max in clamshell mode 100% of the time at home. I was doing this with the LG UltraFine 5K until I picked up the Studio Display. I use the BookArc by Twelve South. Having a single Mac that can be used at home and away is great. Especially now that the performance is comparable.

Check out the smarts in the battery charging menu which learns when a full charge is needed. It knows that I'm "Rarely on battery" ?
I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watching this refurb video of a PowerBook Duo. I was just thinking how cool it was that Apple used to make things like this. It's nice that its spirit lives on in Apple Silicon. Do you also use a dock to simplify connections?
