Studio Display Enables 'Hey Siri' on Several Older Macs

The fact that those macs didn’t support siri had nothing to do with hardware capability, and everything to do with selling more macs.

That’s definitely not true. To think that Hey Siri would drive up sales of Macs is ridiculous. It does require specific hardware to drive the microphone.

Yup, and that's just the beginning of features the display and its A13 chip will support. There's many more in store.

Like a detachable power cable? That aside, there is no official roadmap that shows anything of that kind will happen. Please don't sell idle speculation as hard fact.

I’ve read that there’s a reason for this. Siri takes privacy much more seriously and therefore has fewer ways to learn or “understand” you.

So with the new monitor running iOS 15.4 when its old enough to still work as a monitor like other ones still do, will you have to upgrade for 'security reasons' ? I want good image quality but a dumb monitor, not buy a new one every five years, or whenever your monitor reaches EOL. <sigh>

Keyboards with finger print, screen with Siri... I understand why one could like these features, but I am too old fashion for that and I really prefer a computer the behaves like a computer. I still have a mechanical watch to time my eggs and a real key to open my door.

Can you explain why you'd say this snarky comment? Like the original poster, I also use it in clamshell mode so isn't the whole point of having Siri on the monitor to be able to hear my voice? What's the point of it only working if the laptop is open as it can just use the laptop mics?!

"Hey Siri" is actually smart enough to deal with this; when I say "Hey Siri", both my iPad and iPhone will hear it and light up. But only one will respond. It seems to prefer the phone most times, but sometimes the iPad will respond if the phone didn't quite hear me.

I think they coordinate over the network and have some kind of a vote to determine which device responds. I should sniff the network to see if it's all done locally or involves Apple's servers.

Getting ready to hit the order button on this display and a mac Mini. This will be kind of a handy feature for certain things. I'm often asking Siri (on my phone or tablet) to set reminders, send simple e mails, and such when I'm not right at my computer. If one is worried about privacy, listening-in, etc. they probably shouldn't own a smartphone or tablet anyway, or put the clamp on those preferences.

So the Apple Studio Display is actually and oversized iPhone with the cellular without the cellular chip. They are using left over iPhone SoCs with 64GB of storage they only use 4GB of so it's a castrated iPhone.

Why? There is no depth camera, and you have Apple's keyboard with TouchID and the ability to unlock with Apple Watch.

Not everyone has Apples keyboard and watch. There is a 64 GB iPhone inside that display. I doubt it’s just to use a webcam for chats and audio. Who knows, maybe they found a way to use the camera more accurately and that’s why it’s resolution is crap at the moment. Face unlock is coming to the Mac one of these days. And before you say I’m wrong….everyone said the same about Touch ID.
