Apple's new Studio Display enables the "Hey Siri" voice command on several older Macs that previously did not support the feature.

For example, while "Hey Siri" normally requires a MacBook Pro released in 2018 or later, the feature can be used on 2016 and 2017 models of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro while connected to a Studio Display. Likewise, while "Hey Siri" normally requires an iMac released in 2020 or later, the feature can be used on 2017 through 2019 models of the 21.5-inch iMac and 27-inch iMac while connected to a Studio Display.

The Studio Display also enables "Hey Siri" on Mac desktops that previously did not support the feature when paired with a non-Apple-branded display, including the 2019 Mac Pro and 2018 and newer models of the Mac mini.

"Hey Siri" is one of several features powered by the Studio Display's built-in A13 Bionic chip, with others including Spatial Audio and the Center Stage camera feature that helps keep you centered within the frame during video calls.

The full list of Macs compatible with the Studio Display on macOS Monterey 12.3 or later:
  • Mac Studio
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2019 or later
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later
  • 15-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later
  • iMac introduced in 2017 or later
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac mini introduced in 2018 or later
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2019
Released last week, key features of the Studio Display include a 27-inch screen size, 5K resolution, a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage, a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. Pricing starts at $1,599 in the United States for a model with standard glass and a tilt-adjustable stand, with upgrade options like nano-texture glass and a VESA mount adapter available.

So the Apple Studio Display is actually and oversized iPhone with the cellular without the cellular chip. They are using left over iPhone SoCs with 64GB of storage they only use 4GB of so it's a castrated iPhone.

Siri has completely changed the way I use my Mac. It’s become my primary interface for doing everything from web searches, to sending emails to setting reminders.

Just kidding. I’ve only invoked it accidentally. Does anyone use Siri on the Mac?

I feel bad for all the apple fanboys that have never experienced google assistant. It is NIGHT and DAY. Google is like a quarter century ahead of apple in this category

Why are you here? If you're that much of a diehard Google fan, then your opinion is already biased to the point of not being able the judge the competition objectively. No matter how good an Apple product is, you'll still see it in a negative light. How do I know? Because that's exactly how I feel about anything Microsoft (except their keyboards).

Now, let's stay on topic, eh? This article is not about Google Assistant. You're welcome.

Wonder what else besides Center Stage, FaceTime, Spatial Audio, and Siri, Apple will allow to run in the display?

Aren't they working on "air gestures" where you don't need to physically touch the screen for input and commands? That could be fully powered by the display.

Siri is garbage
…for you.

I use Siri every day for notes, emails, home control automation, CarPlay dictation, the list goes on. Siri makes my multitasking needs more efficient and convenient. Is Siri perfect? Absolutely not, but I don’t expect perfection, from any type of artificial intelligence assistant.

I tried using Siri recently while driving to search for a song and it said it can’t give me results while I’m driving… wtf? It used to do so number one, and two, the whole point of me asking it to search for a song is I can stay focused on the road without needing to open my phone.

Garbage. Useless.

I'm curious, how well do the new M1 Macbook Pros work in clamshell mode? I'm trying to decide between buying a Studio Display + Mac Studio, or a Studio Display + Macbook Pro. The latter would stay home "docked" most of the time, but it would be more flexible to be able to take the laptop with me sometimes.

But for this to be a suitable setup the Macbook Pro would have to be rock solid in clamshell mode. At least as reliable as an iMac.
I have a M1 MBA fully specced and currently use it in clamshell mode on a 4K UltraFine. It works well except when it should wake up after some period in sleep - depending on how long ago it was last restarted, it can take a long time until the machine has sorted itself again, with low resolution screen image, dock hovering in mid air, and bad responsiveness to keyboard or trackpad commands etc. That may take a few minutes in worst case.

As I use the MBA in clamshell almost to 100%, I have a 2019 iMac which I am currently setting up, and I will sell the MBA.

Best,
Magnus

I’ve turned hey Siri off on all my apple devices, the thing is very intrusive and technically useless

I was having a conversation and the thing interrupted me ‘ I don’t agree with that ‘

Big brother is definitely watching , or in this case listening…..

I also turned "Hey Siri" off, it just too annoying.
I know it's fun to use sometimes, but most of the time I use the terms "sigh..", or "come on, Siri!", or " HEY F**** SIRI!!"!, finally "oh, shut up".

What’s next? CSAM scanning through the thunderbolt cable of your Mac?
I’m not sure I want a monitor running iOS 15.
Even creepier, remove contents that Apple don’t want you to see and replace with empty stuff.
since display iOS is impossible to configure (without special hardware and software), I have to wonder what else does this A13 chip is configured to do.

I use my MacBook Pro Max in clamshell mode 100% of the time at home. I was doing this with the LG UltraFine 5K until I picked up the Studio Display. I use the BookArc by Twelve South. Having a single Mac that can be used at home and away is great. Especially now that the performance is comparable.

Check out the smarts in the battery charging menu which learns when a full charge is needed. It knows that I'm "Rarely on battery" ?

Even better than this is AlDente Pro which gives the user total control over the maximum allowed battery level and charging behaviour. Not sure if it works with M1 Macs though.

Before you know it the UK government will be using their Online Safety Bill to lobby Apple into proactively shielding unapproved content from the user’s gaze. Won’t someone please think of the children!? And the worst part is I’m not even joking.
