Well, I'm glad to see this thread... it gives me some hope the issue I ran into this morning might get fixed soon...

It was a nice Sunday here in LA and I decided just to update everything, including the new Studio Display I've had for 10 days. Mine was on firmware 15.3 and I saw a 15.4 was available but googling around told me first I had to update my OS from 12.1 to 12.3.1. I did that update with no problems.

With 12.3.1 installed I did indeed finally see an update to firmware 15.4 for the Display. Tried that but after about 20 minutes the whole screen was black with an error message at the center saying the update failed and to go to support.apple.com/display/restore for info. (There was no mention of waiting an hour and retrying as it seems some people got in a warning message a month ago.) The info on that page was a bit confusing. They wanted me to attach another monitor to my Mac Mini to complete the installation, but there was no mention of what to do about the Studio Display itself. (Is the firmware for the Display in the Mac Mini?) Anyway, I don't have an extra display so the advice said in that case call Apple. I called and they couldn't figure anything out over the phone and told me to take it to an Apple Store. Luckily there is an Apple Store about half a mile from me so I go on the wait list for a service appointment and after 2 hours they were able to take a look at it.

The very friendly and apologetic folks at the Apple Store said this was the first time they'd seen the issue and quoted me 3-5 days to fix it, but hopefully less. So now it's sitting with the Apple Store.

Taught me a lesson not to update the thing if it's working fine, which it was...

Sorry this happened to you although I think it's a different issue to what we all were all having before. The original issues is the update just wasn't working for several of us. More like a server issue from Apple. Not sure what happened in your case.

Thanks for the note. The Apple Store got my display back to me this morning, fixed and updated. Given that Apple released 15.5 only this morning, perhaps my problem had something to do with updating to (or trying to) 15.4 yesterday; Maybe there was some complication which I don't understand on Apple's end. Anyway, I plan to wait a few days and make sure 15.5 is not causing general havoc before updating. Carting this display back and forth to the Apple Store isn't easy or quick.

No doubt I get that. I would probably wait on 15.5 as well if I just got it back from Apple. I plan on updating when I get home this evening and will report back on how it goes. Not going to lie, I'm a bit nervous.

15.5 firmware update went smooth in both of my ASDs VESA Mount. Camera looks much better now, at least better enough for my use and definitely much better than my 2017 iMac 5K FaceTime camera.

I had a problem where the update was available but nothing changed on the update bar for over half an hour so I cancelled the update and tried again and this time it went straight through

This happened to me with the release candidate. I unplugged it from the power, restarted it, and plugged it into the Mac. It then reinstalled the update without an issue.

I just posted this in another thread. It's the second time the display has failed upgrading and just showed me the restore URL:

"This time I got into a reboot loop and it kept showing the restore screen. What has eventually worked for me twice is unplugging power and Thunderbolt cable on both sides. Reconnect everything and even if it comes back to the restore screen LEAVE IT ALONE. After quite a while it started upgrading and eventually worked."

Mine was bricked with the 15.5 update. Displayed support page is not helpful…
What the Apple Store told me -- and be careful, as I only spoke to the floor manager, not the actual tech who did the fix -- is that if you're bricked as I was, with a warning screen giving a web address with some info that seems confusing and not relevant, what you have to do is find another display, connect BOTH your ASD and the other display to the same computer (the point of the second display, of course, is so you can see what your computer is up to), then try running the ASD update again. The floor manager said he believed that's what the techs did to fix mine.

I have x2 Studio monitors which are connected to my Mac Studio Ultra and when I check for an update, nothing is found for the Studio monitors.
I also have a 16" MBP and the the Studio monitors have never been connected to it but when searching for any updates, It shows an update for the Studio monitors. When I try the update though, I get a firmware update error (Make sure Apple Studio is connected to Mac and try again).

Why does my Mac Studio not show the monitor updates despite both being plugged into it yet the laptop shows the update even though they've never been connected to it?
Both machines are running Montery 12.3.1

with 15.5, the studio display is now appearing in network settings with a self-assigned DHCP. Anyone else?
On macOS 12.4, with ASD updated to 15.5, I do not see it in System Preferences > Network

I see a Thunderbolt Bridge, but that's not the display.

Got it fixed. I had to use the original Apple thunderbolt cable...
I don't think the OEM Apple cable is a 'requirement'. I'm using a Cable Matters TB4 cable, and I got the update late last night. Certainly couldn't hurt to try the original cable if the update seems delayed, but (eventually) the update(s) will come even with an aftermarket cable.

My Mac Studio did not show the Display update until after I updated to 12.4. It then offered the Display update and all went well. Smooth and no issues at all. 14" MBP M1 Pro showed nothing...

On macOS 12.4, with ASD updated to 15.5, I do not see it in System Preferences > Network

just checked. shows up on mine under system prefs > network with a self-assigned IP

Thanks for the update. I’m not seeing that. I’m also using Ethernet and Wi-Fi to connect to my network, like you. Seems odd we have different result.

I have a pair of ASDs with my Mac Studio and I’m also not seeing any ASDs on my network settings. I have my Mac Studio wired to my Netgear switch and also wifi is ON. My Mac Studio is running macOS 12.4 and ASDs 15.5 firmware.

Well hmm, I tried updating mine from 15.4 to 15.5 and I am getting the same full-screen-of-black error message I got when I tried to go from 15.3 to 15.4 4 days ago. I wonder if there's some hardware problem in my particular unit...

Ok, just following up, problem solved. This time around I borrowed a second monitor from a friend so I could see what was going on. I have a 2021 Mac Mini so it will drive 2 monitors as long as the second one is connected by HDMI.

Connected Monitor 2 via HDMI just fine. Checked software update to see if I could start the process again to update the Studio Display but... Studio Display was not recognized by my computer at all, though it was connected (and displaying the full black screen error message). Checked system report, no sign of the Studio Display in there also. Uh oh.

Following other users experience in here I unplugged the Studio Display, let it sit a few minutes, then plugged it back in. Same situation: error screen, not recognized by the Mac.

For some reason I can't remember, decided to try attaching the Thunderbolt Cable running to the Studio Display to the other Thunderbolt Connection on the Mac (there are two on the Mac Mini). Guess I was just randomly trying whatever I could think of. At this point I noticed the error message on the Studio Display disappear and the "updating" screen (three pulsating dots, like an ellipsis) reappear. After another minute or two, my Studio Display came back to life, showing my desktop. System Report shows the Display firmware now at 15.5.

I can't say for sure that changing the Thunderbolt cable position caused the update to restart and finally finish successfully. It's possible that started happening before I switched the cable position -- I wasn't watching the whole situation carefully enough to say for sure. But, if anyone runs into this problem, I would say it's worth a try. It could be that simply unplugging the Studio Display for a while (and possibly also unplugging the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac) is what made the update restart. So that's another thing to try.
