Four months after Apple released the Studio Display, shipping estimates for the display are finally showing significant improvement in many countries.

mac-studio-and-studio-display.jpeg

While the Studio Display was estimated for delivery in 8-10 weeks as of May, and in 6-8 weeks as of June, Apple's online store now shows a much shorter 1-2 week delivery estimate for new orders in the United States. These timeframes apply to the $1,599 configuration of the Studio Display with standard glass and a tilt-adjustable stand, with upgraded configurations still facing lengthier but improving shipping estimates.

In Canada, a Studio Display ordered today can be delivered by Apple as early as July 26, and UK orders are facing a 3-4 weeks wait.

Introduced alongside the Mac Studio in March, the Studio Display is a standalone display that serves as a lower-priced alternative to Apple's Pro Display XDR. The display features a 27-inch screen with 5K resolution, a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage, a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio, one Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. Upgrade options include nano-texture glass and a height-adjustable stand.

Well I was able to order a Mac studio custom order in the studio arrive before I thought it would put the monitor still in purgatory. I can't say that I purchased one from Costco which I got two days but ordering from Apple it's been over a month now. But I can't say that the display itself is a nice design the audio is OK but the camera and the actual display itself seems a little muddy to me and soft my iMac display still seems to be a little sharper than the studio display which I've got plugged in through the thunderbolt port I'm using a studio with a current OS and 64 gigs of RAM in a terabyte SSD. So I don't know what all the hype is about but maybe it's something that I will get adjusted to later.

This is such a poor product offering. It's an iMac monitor without the iMac for, what, $100 or $200 less?
For this money I'd expect at least 120 hertz, or better overall monitor specs.
Apple does not offer a 27" iMac anymore, so your price comparison is pretty poor.

This is a high quality display meant to last for 5-10 years. It'll; be easier to add in a Mini/Studio/Pro to this display every 2-3 years instead of buying a new iMac

I'm assuming that's not a typo, and if I'm right then 👍. Or perhaps a StudiOhNo Display. Or StudiOMFGNo.
Oh it's not a typo. We came up with the name on the PCMR Discord's macOS channel. (Yes some PC gamers use Macs too.) Other names include the Stupido Display, the eWaste Display, the iHateHavingMoney Display, the "Apple what crack were you smoking when you made this piece of [CENSORED]" Display, the Pro Display XDR's Stupid Little Brother, etc

Hell even at my local Apple Store the store employees were making fun of that joke of a monitor with customers.

Does it have the ability to change inputs? So M1 Mini and Work PC Laptop?
If this question is to me, yes it does… even activate a split screen mode for Mac on the left, Windows on the right and one mouse & keyboard working with both. Basically, old fashioned “bootcamp” revived… with a few more ports to spare for other inputs and/or sharing other hardware with multiple platforms.

I've compared the LG Ultrafine to the Apple Studio Display and the ASD is FAR superior. Much more accurate color, uniformity, and so on.

LG may be supplying the panels for both but Apple is putting far more work into calibrating the display well and rejecting imperfect panels.
I am using them side-by-side right now – which has actually been tempting me into getting a second ASD.

I actually meant to sell the Ultrafine 5K right away, but with travel haven't pushed the sale effort too hard. I ended up pulling the LG out of storage a few times when project work has benefited from another screen, and I now just keep both my desk for convenience. (This isn't too surprising, I guess. I used to pair the LG with my iMac 5K. Now I use a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.)

Agreeing with what was said on the differences I'll add: the wobbling of the LG stand is horrible. The ASD is rock solid, doesn't budge. And in the evening it quickly becomes apparent on the LG that the blacks just wash out at any sort of slightly "off" viewing angle (honestly, including straight on but looking at the edges.) Likely this is due to the glass more than a panel difference, but either way, the ASD is an improvement.

Speaking of the glass: the edge-to-edge glass with a darker black frame also looks much classier on the desk, very satisfying aesthetically. Especially next to the LG.

But, to be fair to the LG, I was happy with it too and that's why I keep using it in the meantime.

Anyway, no regrets here. (For folks interested in various perspectives/experiences of owners I'd suggest the owners thread on the forum.)

I ordered mine on June 30th (thanks to my great workplace which paid for it) and delivery estimates went from mid-September to late August and most recently to mid August. So that’s great.

The weird thing is I got a delivery estimate email from Apple that ALSO said I need to call them if I don’t want my order cancelled. I called them and they said don’t worry it’s not cancelled, it’s just their email messaging is messed up and the same thing is happening to a lot of customers.

I have the Vesa mount ASD. Took so long to arrive I forgot I ordered it. Great monitor, though a bit pricey. I use it as my main with my LG 4k 27" to my right and my 16" m1 mbp to my left. In terms of picture quality, it's the 16" mbp, then ASD, and finally the LG 4k (running at 1440 adds a slight blur).

I plan too, after I see what the m2 mini looks like and I decide between desktop plus this screen, vs desktop + laptop with this screen, or just laptop + screen. So many great combos out there.
I have the MBP16 + Studio Display. The MBP is a bit overkill since I mostly use the combo with the screen but it's by far the best setup I ever had.

I'm not sure why there was such a delay on Studio Display in the first place. Not like it contains a certain chip.

My guess is there was an initial pent up demand that is starting to settle down.

Still can't understand why Apple doesn't make a consumer display that is nothing more than an iMac with no "cpu guts".

Edit: Not saying the chin would be great but you could put better speakers in it or some other features. Point is this would require minimal engineering costs etc and give us a consumer grade, and price, product.

It very clearly is not. It is the same resolution but several features of the Studio display are better than an iMac.

Don't confuse my request for a consumer monitor as one for something "cheap". Apple makes many consumer level products ex: 24" iMac, the Mac Mini, Macbook Air, etc. There is plenty of space for Apple to make a premium 5k panel for those of us that don't need the Studio and/or the XDR, say $900-1000. Again, take the CPU out of an iMac and give me 2 inputs and we are done.

It is stupid of Apple to abandon their customers of entry level computers with no matching monitor. Mini customers have been screaming for this forever. Why cater to the $699 base price mini crowd and not offer them a comensurate quality monitor that isn't over 2x the cost?

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying - but I feel like the Studio Display is our only option for this (Especially at 27” / 5K) and that it is what you’re asking for (an iMac without the traditional CPU / computer built in).

Are you hoping / wishing for something closer to the $1K mark but similar features?

I have one. Best display I've ever owned. Unbelievably good.

Same here. I have one hooked up to a Mac Studio, next to my 5K iMac. I was surprised it was noticeably better than my iMac.

That it has three downstream USB-C ports is icing on the cake.

A fair number of people have been wanting an Apple-branded retina 5K display since the launch of the iMac 5K because the other 5K retina options were not appealing so I was not surprised initial demand was high.
Yup.

Though I think most of those hoping for this were also hoping it would be more in the $1000 range, i.e., that it wouldn't cost nearly the same to get a stand-alone 27" 5k monitor ($1600) as what it cost to buy an entire 27" 5k iMac ($1800 for the 2020 base model). ~$1000 ($974, actually) is also what Apple offered the 27" 5k LG UltraFine for on its website for a time. And for the same functionality, costs should decrease with time.

Does anyone have any idea if I can use the Studio Display with a Playstation 4 too?
