I did a quick read through and put my Mac Mini into sleep. Came back 5 mins later and I can still feel the fan on the top of the display. Machine was still in sleep. Seems to be more of a macOS decision than a per display problem.
Mine just arrived as well. The Apple packaging is just another level.

As far as the Display concern - Just awesome! What a Display. From first impressions I say it is even better to what Apple promised. Photos in LR are looking awesome. The Colors are 😍. BW is also 🥰

No Problem with my M1Pro 16MBP, apart from just 60hz. Also works fine with my work laptop. (Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen5).

The price is high, but if you can afford one just got for it!
I put on the HDR photo profile in display settings and opened up LR. WOW! Discovered a whole new viewing experience of my photos.

Can anyone confirm if we can get full 4 HDR stops in Lightroom classic with half display brightness. With my m1max I get 3.5 stops.

Also curious if color on XDR monitor looks better than on MacBook Pro with HDR and SDR photo

Anyone get two of these and have daisy-chained them? If so, what Mac are you using and any issues with performance in this configuration?

My room sits at 38db right now. Not anywhere near silent. But I will say the ASD XDR appears to not be noticeable. If you're a musician or such where your professional job requires minimal background noise, you might want to do more research. I have a LaCie d2 as a TimeMachine drive and the drive is louder than the XDR even during its more silent moments.

I will say that I plugged the monitor into the power outlet and then my face was near the top of the monitor to start plugging the TB5 cable to my mini. I was surprised to feel the fan was on even though it had no TB5 cable connected. So I'd be curious to do further testing to see if the fan runs when the computer is off.

Bass seems to get a little bit deeper. Biggest thing that I've noticed is max volume though. While I have no scientific measurement, I feel that my old ASD at 100% is closer to ASD XDR at 80%. If I go higher than 80% it starts to hurt my ears. So it seems to have a lot of range.

Yes, I do see vignetting around the edges using the default out of box settings/brightness while viewing this white forum background on MR. Less noticeable on colored area of the screen.
Thanks for posting this. How noticeable is the vignetting? Any chance of a photo? That stuff drives me crazy if it's noticeable in regular use.

I just got 2 today and they daisy chained to my M4 Max studio perfect.

The M4 air I have is another story....I can't get both displays to connect to it no matter what I do. Daisy chained or even 2 separate TB cables. It will only ever recognize one display.

Anyone hit this problem? This is just a regular MacBook Air m4

Just got my XDR and playing with it. Coming from a 4k 32' Benq image quality is miles better. However size is my main question mark.

Just one question, I do not managed to see where to activate or deactivate HDR. It does not seam to be shown under display settings. Is there anything else I need to activate/deactivate?

Okay, I came back after a few hours and the fan was not on. Maybe the fan only ran for a few minutes after and then shut off?

When I woke up the computer, the fan immediately kicked on.

That's a limitation of TB4.

Your M4 Max Studio has TB5. Your Air has TB4. TB5 provides 80 Gbps and a 120 Gbps boost mode vs TB4s 40 Gbps. I also believe TB5 adds DisplayPort 2.1 vs TB4s 2.0 support.

Even the MacBook Air M5 did not add TB5.

It’s not horrible. Really only see it on perfect white backgrounds.

Here’s a pic. I feel like you can see it on the left, right, and bottom.

Display is set to automatically adjust brightness and its at about 25% in a dark room.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, fans will run while Mac doing some background work in sleep, so that’s fine. If the fans stop and don’t stay on for ever that’s good for you and all the users of the new device. Keep an eye on it and enjoy your display.
Just hope this gets fixed for the old ASD, but Apple right now is not recognizing this as an unexpected behaviour. Just ignoring users feedback and tickets.

Thanks - I looked on Apple’s site and it listed the m4 air as being able to support 2 external displays.

Is this not the case with the xdr’s because the TB5? Is there no way around this? I had it connected to 2x original gen Studio Displays which worked great

Hey all -

I just got my Studio Display XDR this morning. I’m having the most issues I’ve ever had setting up an Apple product.

List of problems I’ve experienced so far.

Background: I’ve got one old Apple Studio Display and an Apple Studio Display XDR connected to M4 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode. I am trying to use the two displays with the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode (ideally 5K @ 60hz for the old display and 5K @ 120hz).

- This flat out doesn’t work. The displays sometimes won’t turn on at all. If I manage to plug in the displays in the exact right order. I get both displays running at 5K@60hz. I am guessing there is a limitation on the M4 Pro MacBook Pro where the displays can’t support all these pixels at these refresh rates. Either way, plugging the displays into M4 Pro shouldn’t cause issues. They should just run at a lower refresh rate. I currently use two old Apple Studio Displays and run them at 5K @ 60hz and it works flawlessly.

- I am unable to daisy chain the old Apple Studio Displays to the new Apple Display. Maybe this is simply not supported at all. The display won’t turn on at all in fact in this scenario. There is very little information on what is and isn’t supported.

- The USB ports do not seem to reliably supplying power to accessories. My external keyboard doesn’t work (Glorious GMMK Pro). My microphone does not work (Shure MV7i). My external DAC will not connect through the USB-C ports. These all require a small amount of power. These all work flawlessly on the 2022 Apple Studio Displays. I’m going to head into the store tonight to try and test if these work or if I just got a lemon. This seems like a really basic feature and is incredibly odd.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I think we are about to find out the limitations for some of the non tb5/ tb4+dsc silicon with the SD XDR

My MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) is Thunderbolt 5. I'm hearing reports that M4/M3 Max do not have these same issues. It seems related to something else.

I was looking at these and they had one with Nanotexture on it (I think? or something like it).
Man, that really ruins it for me. Not a fan of that at all.

It made it all look sort of very lightly "grainy" or something.

Can someone with the XDR test if Intel Macs can connect to it at 5K resolution, and if the speakers and camera work? The white paper document on the Apple website suggests it works with all Thunderbolt 3 and above Macs. I still have a 2019 Mac Pro in addition to a newer MacBook Pro from work, so I want to check if they both would work with the XDR before buying it and what limitations there would be for non Apple Silicon

Did anyone purchase one to primarily use with iPad Pro? I’m really considering one, and I primarily use iPad over a MacBook

Got one for both my iPad Pro m5 and my MacBook Pro m4 pro. Works great, 120Hz and 5k resolution it seems. Only thing is I totally forgot how much blooming can be visible in dark mode on a miniLED versus the iPad’s OLED so now I’m on the fence. In light mode, it’s amazing.

Got a pair of XDR. Connected to MBP 14" M4 Pro. On first try plugging both displays in directly to the MBP, only one screen would turn on (5K 47-120Hz). Unplugging the working XDR would turn on the other XDR. After rebooting MBP, both turned on, but each only at 5K 47-60Hz. I had thought, per Apple's description, one XDR would be 120Hz and the other would be 60Hz when both used together. Guess not? I have a M5 Max MBP14 coming next week. I have a M4 Max 16" MBP also but not on me right now, but that's supposed to support dual 5K 120Hz.

The XDR is really bright and stunning compared to the MBP. iPhone pics make the XDRs look washed out, but it's just a brightness difference. Speakers sound louder, bass a little stronger I suppose. Fans are silent, same as ASD, but by feel seems to have a lot more airflow output at max brightness.
