Agreed, this is ridiculous.

I wasn't meant to be short (pituitary dwarfism, genetic defect caused IGF-I deficiency, delayed bone age etc. etc. so I didn't grow once I started hitting puberty) but I've always thought I was reasonably intelligent, and the people around me in addition to IQ and other tests seem to agree that I'm far from an intellectual slouch (to put it lightly and preserve that last shred of modesty).

But if it weren't for 3 years of expensive treatment i'd still be a bit under 4'10". And just as smart.
Now i'm a normal 5'9".

Obviously no-one read my post :(

The study does not claim that being tall makes you smarter - only the journalist does. It reports a correlation between height and intelligence. It is not the same thing.

These studies are so full of crappen. I doubt that height correlates with intelligence.

Correlate directly, no. But it could be argued that height correlates to the perception of intelligence. There was a study done a while ago (it was in the news but I don't remember who performed it) that said that taller men stood a better chance of both getting the job and being paid more for the same job that their not-so-tall counterparts.

Indeed could be true

I'm sure we all read it, it's just that the short people couldn't understand it. Must have gone over their heads. ;)

"...got no reason. No reason it live."

Lol this study is a joke. I have run into a ton of dumb, tall people in my life. Alot of times, the shorter people have been as smart, if not smarter. I'm 5'6, and I have met people who are far smarter than me who aren't even 5' tall (Asian girls). Likewise, I know lots people who are taller than me, who struggled to pass even simple classes such as Precalculus!

Height is not a determinant of intelligence. Perseverance & hard work ARE determinants.

Well, at a strapping 5' 7", it's no wonder my posts are too clever for some people :D

Just one more try and then I'll shut up:

The study never claims that being taller makes you smarter

OK, I'm off now, sorry to bother you all

Interesting, given the title of the thread seems to state otherwise.

The title of the thread: Yes.
The title of the newspaper article: Yes.
The actual contents of the study, according to the detail in the article: No.

:)

I remember reading somewhere that people between the heights of 6'2" and 6'4" make the best lovers. ;) Na... na... na... naaaaaaaaaa na!

Correlation vs. causation

To clarify, the study points to a correlation between height and intelligence. The headline titles incorrectly imply a causational relationship. Being taller doesn't make you smarter, it just happens that higher cognitive abilities have been found in taller people.

On a grand scale, consider human remains from thousands of years ago. Most humans were "short" by our standards - 4 feet. Over time, the race has gotten taller and more intelligent. This just shows that we are still progressing in that direction. <begin evolution debate> The study (and history) doesn't imply that if taller-->then smarter, it just illustrates a trend.

which, that tall people earn more money / are smarter or that small people are socially more harassed and earn less? :p

Why that tall people earn more money and are smarter of course! :p

...

Of course, they have higher cognitive abilities. Their brains are higher.

I would guess that a greater number of them attend higher education, as well, because they can reach it. I've noticed that higher education is often out of the reach of many people, especially the shorter and younger. ;)

I've always wondered why Shaq is so smart.
Yes, I'd hire him to run a billion dollar company.

Just to fire his ass and replace him with a midget like Ross Perot. ;)

Best person for the job, even if he is short and annoying.

Randy Newman sang about it, too. But that was way before "If I Didn't Have You." ;)

i believe the chorus goes something like

"Short people got no reason to live"

he goes on to insult our tiny hands and little beady eyes and how you have to pick us up just to say hi

that bastard.

Ironically, Newman's intent for writing the song was satrical and was poking fun at prejudice. Because of the missunderstandings He says he's grown to hate it although it's his most remembered and associated song. :)

"We must listen to the almighty thread title for it is all-knowing, all-powerful, and never misleading!"

Sorry, I'm short, blonde, and come from a family of dirt-farmers.

And someone said something about asians not being included. Well, since I'm throwing out some ridiculous generalizations I might as well point out that all asians are ninjas and couldn't be located for comments because they are very, very sneaky.
