A la carte usn't gonna happen. Networks/cable companies have a tight grip on that.

And this is EXACTLY the reason many have been saying it's a bad idea.

Make a box and anyone on the planet (almost!) can plug the box into any TV of any size/make and use the thing.

As soon as you make a TV, it's going to be limited to the model you make.

Someone like Samsung will make TV's of all different sizes and price points.
Apple comes along with just 2 models... What's the point?

lol

this is the "cracked" version of TV.

I had better expectations.

It's still a rumor, nothing more. Calm down.

If the sizes are correct and everything real, I guess this will be more of a bigger iMac (probably with a build-in Apple TV) than the rumored Apple TV.

By this time next year, 32" tv's will be the rage. Waiting in long lines, shortages, etc. Apple will start a back to basics movement and everyone will want smaller tv's again. Only the elite will have a 37". It will change everything. Again.

I'll buy the standalone box if it brings apps to my tv but I don't ever see myself buying and apple branded tv. It just wouldn't be cost effective when I could get a larger tv for half the price.

I certainly hope that if they do release a TV, and I like it, that it would in in at least a 50" size. I'm in the market in 2012 for another TV. I want to move my 36" Samsung to another room and get a 50" for the living room. An interesting and awesome Apple TV would be just the thing.

It seems that when they built my cottage nearly 300 years ago that they didn't plan for anything larger than a 32" screen in the living room. Lack of forward thinking if you ask me.

Apple TV Thunderbolt Display

However, as we all know, Apple sells a 27'' Thunderbolt display. These could be larger TB displays, so Apple will have a complete lineup: 27'' - 32'' - 37''. Apple TV functionality could be built into these TB displays, since Apple "hockey puck" TV internals are cheap and small to produce.

So basically very large monitors with TV capability ?

That could, very well, be it. The 1000€ 70cm TBD only has USB, FW, LAN and TB ports, though, which is not enough for the living room. The 120€ ATV has HDMI, digital audio out, Wifi, BT and IR remote (and more).

We are also not talking “real TV” here, i.e. traditional broadcast, but “channel apps”. Imagine iBooks or Newsstand with videos.

I also can’t imagine that, if Apple tried to enter the TV set market, they wouldn’t use the opportunity to target video game consoles at the same time, at least for casual gamers.

Apple does not make anyone buy anything. They may make you WANT to purchase a new device but you never need to. My computers are several years old and work just fine. No need to be replaced yet.

There comes the point where you say to yourself "I wish the bloody thing would break down so I can buy myself something new". I hate throwing away things that are still perfectly working. I was lucky once when lightning killed my iMac - so the insurance paid more than half of the MacPro that I wanted to buy anyway. But that is 10 years old now and it just refuses to break down

Good start. I doubt apple could make a 50 inch television affordable :)

You can already buy a pocket projector at Brookstone which is the size of an iphone and uses your iphone.

You can hook your iphone into this projector and it supposedly projects pictures up to 50".

Now you have a voice controlled device no extra box etc.

I hope Apple comes out with a better version of this as part of an aTV revamp.

I'm not so sure Apple will price a 50"+ TV much more than others. Keep in mind they introduced the iPad at what was then a reasonable price. I think they'll do the same with TVs.

Plus the TV market is already saturated and even if it has some groundbreaking features the price is going to have to be competitive.

Apple should include an Apple logo sticker in the ATV2/3 box with instructions on how to attach it to your existing television for maximum visibility.

You would get all the benefits of an integrated Apple Television without the expense and hassle of replacing your existing panel every 1-2 years.

re original article

i only can hope an aapl tv will be true to mr jobs standard of "insanely great"

Same here.

MacPro dual PowerPC processors (or whatever it was called then:) from 1994 updated 5 or more years ago with an OWC accelerator.

Only had to swap out CD drive to a superdrive to update ($ 25)

Splurged with a 2335 HP monitor also some time ago.

Every once in a while I open it to blow out the dust and off we go again.

Goes to 10.5.8 and does everything beautifully.

32/ 37 is back to 2006/2007, but apple is known to sell out old tech.:D
wait till it come out and many of us will grab it and than will be trying to justify how 37" apple is better than 60" LOL...

Apple's strategy is severely flawed. If they manufactured an actual TV, they wouldn't be bringing anything to the party that they couldn't do with a set top box like the current :apple:TV. Also, Apple hates competing on specs. Do you think Apple will want to take on Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, and the myriad other "budget" TV manufacturers? Will Apple's TV be edge lit or LED array backlit? Will it incorporate the latest local dimming technology as demonstrated by Sharp's Elite TV? Or will Apple kick back and just say their TV is "magical" without anything else?

An Apple branded TV will be Apple's waterloo. Not because they can't do excellent stuff in software - they can - but this is a market I don't think Apple understands. Apple's traditional ways of selling their Mac, iPhone and iPads will not work for TVs. Regarding sizes, there is nothing to see unless they come up with something in the 50+ and 60+ size ranges. Are they kidding with 32-37 inches? What is this, 1992?

The point is that they will dominate the 32-37 inch market. It's a TV for a niche market, and they will destroy that market. There are too many good sets in the larger screen sizes and too many crappy ones in the smaller.

Because everyone wants 60" sets in their bedroom. Also not everyones wants a TV dominating their living room. But I really think the market will be high end TVs as a second TV or dorm rooms, lofts, apartments, or those whose life doesn't center around a TV.

Well, if it's "only" 32 and 37-inch size then it's not interesting at all ... has to be bigger than 50 inches to enter my living room!

Are you compensating for something?

I have a 32 inch TV set and it borders on the extravagant and excessive.

It seems that when they built my cottage nearly 300 years ago that they didn't plan for anything larger than a 32" screen in the living room. Lack of forward thinking if you ask me.

LOL, that or decency.

People have these cavernous living and bed rooms now, so they feel the need to buy 80 inch TV sets. "Well, I gots to see it!" they say. Ideally, the Idiot Box isn't the focal point of the living room.

I call BS on this one too.

Apple's knows the value-add - and more importantly the MARGIN - is in the box, not the screen.

They'll let the Asian manufacturers race to the bottom selling big TV screens while they supply the pricey little box with all those HDMI connectors and a coax jack.

This is just the initial run and it is logical when you consider that most folks that have a big 50-60" tv desire already bought one and aren't likely to replace it with this new thing until they are sure the bugs are out etc (so in maybe a year). So they test the waters on smaller sizes and then work up.

Plenty of college kids in dorms that might go for this, especially if they can also use it as a dummy screen for their computers, their playstations etc

revolutionary interface
Could be a new TV and not a television set. I'll believe this when I see it. For the moment these rumours are just waffle filling space cause MacRumors refuse to believe this could be a new TV interface.
