Nexus 7 better than iPad Mini? LOL. Thanks for the joke of the day. :D :D :D

fAndroids are delusional. They seem to have this idea that one can have both a high quality device and a cheap price. Doesn't happen. Never will. You get what you pay for.

I think Apple is going to start changing up the release schedule...knowing when the next version is coming out is hurting them and a biannual release only hurts them more.

I think we'll see the retina mini soon.

Android devices are way ahead.

I'm so sick of these incremental updates and all you're really getting is the same device. In other words no new hardware or software features.

Have people forgotten what it means for a device to be updated.

Who cares if it has Retina or not. Most people dont have an issue with the first model. But if Retina means a bigger device that uses more battery power then how can that be an advancement.
What happened to IGZO promising a thinner device that uses less battery power?!!

I really want a retina iPad Mini, but not if it comes at the expense of battery life and/or additional weight. That may unfortunately be the case, might have to wait another generation.

I completely agree with the battery life issue but out of curiosity what would a little weight hurt?

It doesn't. We have an iPad 3. The difference between it and the 2 isn't even noticeable unless you hold both of them in a corner in each hand and let gravity take over.

With the mini, I doubt you'd even be able to tell considering how much smaller it is.

So, Android devices are way ahead based on a rumor about a potential future Apple product. Got it.

By the way, if you're simply looking for the longest feature checklist, go with Samsung. Apple isn't playing that game.

Way ahead of what? Specs? They sure aren't way ahead in tablet sales.

And specs have already been shown to not matter...it's the user experience, os, design, etc.

Actually if you want to go with checklist, Im sure Apple can make up things like SS did on that one iPhone vs S3 add years ago that were software based.

Yeah, that's what I read as well. I love R Ritchie's prediction that we could see a new one "as soon as next month." Way to nail it down!

Exactly.

We could also see some rain "as soon as next month"...

People keep expecting revolutionary updates. But you can only do so much with tablets and phones. There is no more revolutionary updates, people need to get used to spec bumps and small touches.

There's always a hoard of people complaining that the next iPad/iPhone doesn't have something revolutionary like holograms or augmented reality or something. If you're looking for the next thing that will wow you don't expect to find it with the next phone or tablet update (from either Apple or its competitors); at least not in the near future.

Couldn't agreed more. Do we expect new car to float, fly with yearly updates? Some people are so stupid.

I have to admit...Apple is good at one thing and that is duping people.

I love how they just released an iPad Mini less than a year ago and they're now going to release a new one with retina display...and all you people will buy one even though you have the originial mini.

It's like Apple purposely builds their first product without the bells and whistles and then releases the same product a year later with the obvious specs the first one should have because they know you will all buy the second one even though you bought the first one.

LOL, do you drive a Model-T, or are you still on a horse and buggy?

One thing I dont understand is...

People say the iPad Mini is better than the Nexus 7 because it has a larger screen.

But people want the iPhone to stay 4'' or even back to 3.5''.

lol

A big screen makes a huge difference right? Why can't this logic be applied to the iPhone?

Where's the 4.5 to 5'' iPhone option?

I can break it down for you:
1. The people who prefer larger tablet screens are not necessarily the same people who prefer smaller phones.
2. It's not necessarily inconsistent to prefer a smaller phone but a larger screen on a tablet because a person could want to use them differently. They might want their phone to optimize portability and one-handed use while wanting the tablet to optimize viewing area. My guess is that people who feel comfortable with two devices tend to feel this way because they can get the best of both worlds. People who prefer one device, on the other hand want to meet somewhere in the middle... a single device that can be a phone with a large screen AND a tablet with a small screen that isn't the most portable phone but us very portable for a tablet.
3. Specifically regarding the mini vs. Nexus 7 post you quoted... The larger screen of the mini is a big deal because it comes with little to no compromise on portability (including battery life). Despite its larger screen, it's lighter, thinner and has better battery life than the Nexus 7, though it's wider. And everybody would prefer a bigger screen if it came with no portability compromises.

The main thing to understand is that there are a lot of different use cases and opinions out there.
And no one wants smaller screen... it's just that some people value portability over screen size for a given type of device.

See: just different people with different preferences, not really much inconsistency.

What new hardware are you looking for with the iPad?

Nexus 7 already beats the Mini. The Mini really needs an update to bring it up to par. Course even being overpriced and under speced it still sells because of the little :apple: on it. Build quality is great, but take away the skin you don't have much left to justify the price.

I know I'll be hated on for saying that, but it's the truth, not my opinion.

I don't think you know the meaning of "truth" vs. "opinion." What you stated is an opinion, period.

So you know for a fact Apple could have released a retina mini last year but purposely chose not to just to dupe people.

But then at the same time people complain that Apple's release cycle isn't keeping up with Android OEM's and want them releasing new stuff every time Samsung, HTC, etc. releases a new device.

Which I guess is what I've been trying to say.

There's no bad reason for Apple not to make a bigger iPhone.

They said there was not a market for the 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7 proved them wrong. They adopted and released the iPad Mini.

They said there was not a market for 4.5 to 5-inch phones, there clearly is.

Apple did make the iPad Mini better than the Nexus 7 which is why I think they should release a larger iPhone to actually compete with the GS4, HTC One, etc.

This should be a disclaimer on every future iPhone and iPad story, seriously. So many whiners its annoying.

fAndroids are delusional. They seem to have this idea that one can have both a high quality device and a cheap price. Doesn't happen. Never will. You get what you pay for.

In my opinion the Nexus 7 remains the best tablet you can buy at this time, regardless of price.

Tablets are a mix of size, comfort, display and performance, and I think the 7 is the best to hit shelves so far. Here's how I see the competition:

~Retina iPads would be second with their awesome displays, but simply weigh too much and are too awkward to handle for long periods of time.

~The Nexus 10 is nice, but I'd rather have iOS if I'm choosing between equal prices and great displays.

~The Mini iPad is ok, but not nearly as compelling. I prefer its 8" screen size, but the display quality is worse, so that you notice it if you come from a Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 is, in my opinion, quite a bit better to hold and handle. Nearly every review comments on this, and it's true--they just nailed the rounded back and soft-textured surface. People love to hold it--when you show it to friends they'll handle it all night (reminds me of the iPhone 3gs that way). The Mini is light, but too narrow and flat, so that you have to oddly pinch on the sides.

I like the App store, but the Google Play store is really just a carbon copy. Maybe if you're not running stock Android there are limitations I don't know about, but I've yet to have any issue finding apps. In fact, I've gotten into some games on the 7, which run nicely on it's 4 core Tegra 3. Heck, I even have some NES and SuperNES emulators running old Mario, Zelda, Punch-Out!, Metroid, and Tecmo SuperBowl--I don't think you can get those in the official App Store.

I do still prefer iOS to Android, but my eyes have been opened recently. Android 4.2 on the 7 is just as smooth--or smoother--than iOS, and the capacitive back, home, and app-switcher buttons are superior to iOS navigation. I hope Apple adopts it as it's FAR better than the iOS double tap to multitask. This isn't as important on phones, but on a tablet, I multitask on the 7 in a way that's simply not possible on iOS currently.

Build quality is much better for the Mini, as it appears to be a real issue for some with the Nexus, but no issues with mine after at about 4 months so far. And hardware-wise the Nexus has GPS on all models (unlike the WiFi-only models of the Mini)...useful for things like Yelp, weather apps, and mapping.

Price makes this even easier, I paid 260 (tax inc) for my 32gb Nexus 7, whereas the iPad mini would have been 340 or so for only 16gb.

~The Note 8, is interesting. It has what I think is the right sized screen, at 8", and a stylus. Haven't tried it out, but I'm curious even if it's not as attractively priced as the 7.

Finally...I would be interested in a retina Mini for my next tablet (probably not interested for another year). The size is right and retina would make the screen superior. I would especially like a little thicker case which perhaps Apple could convince Ive to allow rounded edges (probably wishful thinking).

The Mini was set to blow iPad out of the water. They just needed to make it 300 bucks with a retina screen and EVERY kid in the world would want one, every school district would put in orders. Sadly, Tim Cook wanted to hit a price point and maintain existing price-tiers so it had to be 330 and have a screen even 200 dollar Android tablets from a year earlier would best.

The Android tablet experience would have to improve a lot for a Nexus to be an overall better device than an iPad.

Android isn't that bad. One advantage it has is a proper Finder. I can plug my Android tablet into my Mac and drag and drop entire directories of PDF files, which is impossible with an iDevice. Apple forces me to burn up precious bandwidtch using iCloud with flat directories. I don't know any serious computer users who organize all their files in flat directories.

Despite iOS's shortcomings, I'll buy a retina mini iPad the day it comes out. Until then, I enjoy reading on my 3 year old Android tablet which has a higher PPI than the mini. Text is crisp and clean, and when I'm into a book I'm only turning pages, not thinking about android vs ios.

Maybe "retina" should be understood as how it is defined and not just doubling the last year's product's resolution.
I just wish that Apple would adopt 3:2 aspect ratio for all ios devices, which would be sweet spot between reading text and watching still / moving images.

S4 showed what the state-of-the-art-pixel density in 2013 should be. Apple is dropping from the wagon. Even when they finally understood that one size does not fit all. Now they should offer better variety like 3,5" for iphoneLight, 5" for iphoneFlagship, 8" for retinaMini and 11" for ipadFlagship. If they wanted to enhance the compactness of iphone over S4 and others, move from 16:9 aspect ratio to 3:2 would make better user experience in all other areas than video. So how about 1920x1280 with 470dpi?

For imac, I think 4k would be enough for retina definition and releasing new macbooks without fusion drive will be huge fail. Airs can be differentiated from mbp's by having only 1 storage, but mbPRO really should have 2. Hopefully we also get matte retina someday...

I don't know about you, 4K on iMac would be overkill for me. Seriously, I really don't understand the hype over so called Retina display on computers. It isn't like you are looking at your computer screen right in front of your eye, like tablet or phone. Put that aside, how much do you think 4K iMac would cost. Sure some people going to buy no matter of what, but are you going to buy if it cost you thousands of dollar? I think not, I really can't find justification on spending thousands of dollar on computer.

By the way, I totally think today's Air is fine. I am using 13 inch Air with 256GB SSD. I liked the screen

I own a Nexus 7. The difference in quality of apps is tremendous in Apple's favor. That's the truth.
