Lost all credibility at 4.7" 720p.

No way Apple would use a new resolution that isn't a integer multiple of current Xcode dimensions and lower PPI at the same time.

Even only one of the two seems unlikely.

More realistically, they'd keep Xcode compatibility and improve PPI by choosing a resolution like 1704*960, which would be @3x in Xcode.

Ok you are not allowed by a phone bigger than 4 inches in your life. Ever.

I'm sure you're one of those folks who thought 3.5 inch was perfect too.

...Ever...

There comes a point when the cons outweigh the pros. If a 6" phone is so great, why not a 7" or 8" phone? Kludgy software solutions such as "single-handed mode" can't make up for the inconvenience of larger dimensions. I prefer a smaller phone and a larger tablet vs the "revert to the mean" approach of Android. It's funny how the most fervent "fandroids" like huge phones with 5-6" 16x9 screens but small 7" 16x9 tablets. Perhaps it's because there isn't as vast a library of apps written specifically for tablets on the Android side.

Lol - the fragmentation that will occur for developers if those displays come to fruition doesn't bear thinking about.

Bring on the 5.7" I'm in for that one.

As far as developers, that's what they do, develop. If not someone else will.

Actually isn't iOS7 designed around adaptive display? If not it should.

This is a great rumour. So exciting! So many different products on the line!
Retina Air? Amazing.
iWatch? I can't wait to see what they are doing, flexible LCD, this should be incredible.
iPhone 6 with bigger screen, right when my contract is ending, perfect upgrade. and Apple TV 55" is what I am looking for for end of 2014.

Next year will be a great year.

I'd buy a 4.7" iPhone.

Me too.

The Apple TV rumor is interesting. These new 4k resolution TV's are just entering the market place and don't have a good content delivery method (blu-rays are low def to them) - plus they're hideously expensive. Seems like the perfect marketplace for Apple to jump into, the TV's are so expensive they won't sell alot but that's not a market area Apple has a problem with, then they get to setup and run the 4k content delivery pipe for the future through iTunes (there's no physical disk standard for 4k).

Can't imagine the file sizes for these movies though....and the speed needed to bring it through the pipe for real time streaming.

720p on a 4.7 inch screen (312 ppi) would still remain over "retina threshold", though it would give an attack surface to the Apple haters (given that the HTC One has 1080p res on the same screen). Anyway, I wouldn't care as long as it's about the same pixel density as what the iPhone 4/4S/5/5S had.

Butt I would much more prefer a 4.3 screen, 4.7 is simply uncomfortable in many ways (no, I don't have small hands, and yes, I have experience on this one). I hope Apple won't jump this far.

Agreed. We currently have two sizes of iPad, Macbook Pro's, and Macbook Airs, and software runs fine despite the fragmentation. It seems plausible that two sizes of iPhone could work.

I'm not sure one can call retina displays on Mac Book Pro's fragmentation; OSX handles that all in the windowing UI, i.e., Mac's are already resolution independent.

The ratios of the mentioned screens for iphone are the same as iphone5, so what fragmentation?

Edit: If you mean the PPI will change, I dont think so. They will say it is still retina with a lower PPI. And `double retina` the displays the year after :)

I want a phone small enough to keep in my pocket when seated. I don't want to be that loser who puts their phone on the table as soon as they sit down in the restaurant.

maybe for some people a phone in the pocket is uncomfortable or it may slip out of the pocket? I mean the S3 fits pretty nicely in any pants/pockets, even better than the 5S because of it's width. No idea what nonsense you are talking about.

How do we know these display sizes aren't for prototypes, that will only exist in Jony's personal test lab, never to see the light of day?

By making the screen taller, but not wider, you can see more of your content, but still comfortably use it with one hand

While I'm sure 720p would look fine on a 4.7" display, it really will be portrayed as a second-class offering, considering nearly all new flagship devices releases recently are offering 1080p. In another year, it will be the norm and a minimum requirement. And the difference may be subtle on a 4.7" display but I can certainly notice a difference after using my HTC One for the past 6 months. I think they'd be much better off using 1080p in both size devices and would see far less criticism.

Apple TV rumors again?

If Apple does start selling 55 inches or bigger "Apple TV" then I hope they continue selling the little black box as well.

I have no intention of ever buying a TV that huge and my current 23" monitor is brand new and will work for a long, long time.

Odd screen sizes

For the iPhone, While I agree they maybe looking at all possibilities. They would likely steer clear of anything that would put to much on developers. Those screen sizes are waaaay off the beaten track. Never know, they may surprise.. but not likely here..

The Retina MBA? That size is WAAAAAAAAY off.. Thats a fat no.. Why would they do a screwball size if they were going IGZO? 720? They do larger w/11" screen. NOT

This is why I think this report is screwed from the start. I still think, like the iWatch, the 13" iPad is more of a distraction by Apple to keep people guessing. Maybe hoping Samsung falls for it, again, and rushes to market with another lame duck. :D

Cook warned about looking at supply chains.. He knows they are looking.. do you think they wouldn't use it to play/screw with media? Hell yah they would! lol:cool:

Because everyone has different tastes?
Just because you like the iPhone 5S the way it is, doesn't mean I do.

I for one would like the 5.7 iPhone 6.

D.

Apple doesn't generally do what everyone wants. They do what they feel will deliver the best experience for their consumer. Yeah, larger screens have a benefit, but they're not as easy to use.
