Dude, right now we have four completely different screen sizes (iPad mini, iPad, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5C/5S) and three different aspect ratios (iPad, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5C/5S) and yet it hardly has an impact on the quality of applications. Developers could handle even more, and you know why? Because there is HUGE money in it.

And we have the 90's coming back to bite Apple on the ass. Too many SKUs and screen sizes. Sure Apple has the billions in the bank now to absorb this mess, but it is a worrying trend.

4.7" 720p device would kill the "Retina" thing.

Their 4.0" screen is nearly 720p. Even the Android devices are shipping stuff with crazy-high DPI, there is no way Apple would backtrack on that - especially since they were doing the high-res thing before most.

This rumored 4.7" 720p phone may well be the next 'c' model.

Meaning the 5.7" (which I still think is a bit ridiculous for their flagship) would be $199, 4.7" $99, 5C free.

But I really don't see why they would have a 5.7" as their flagship when other companies have their flagship around 5" (which is what most people stretch to) and then create bigger phones for the people who want bigger.

But we'll see.

Am I the only one in the belief that Apple will NOT use a standard res for their iPhone (ie. 720, 1080)?

I'm probably insane for expecting a 2272 x 1280 larger screened iPhone.

A 12" high-res air sounds awesome, especially 16:10. The 11" size wise was fine, but the vertical screen space was lacking with the 16:9 display. The current 13" air has a larger footprint than the 13" Retina pro.

The question is - do they go to just one low priced ($999 starting, like the current 11"), high resolution 12" Air? Then 13"/15" retina pro's.

bringing out a 720 resolution 4.7" phone in 2014, when all 2013 Android flagships are at 1080 resolution, is at best idiotic, if nothing else, from a marketing standpoint.

4.7" to 5" is probably the best screen size for the average hand to hold (I have both the iPhone 5 and a 5.5" Lenovo K900, which is a bit too big to hold at times, although the screen is gorgeous.

If Apple really bring a 1280×720 4.7" flagship in 2014, it will become the butt of jokes in the mobile world. Really.

but but... The aspect ratios of the mentioned devices are the same as current. Why would there be a need to develop for more?

People still use the iPhone as the butt of their jokes in the mobile world.

1280x720 @4.7 is still 312 PPI, which would fit their pixel density criteria for a "Retina" display. Although I expect it to be higher res'd than that personally

iPad product line

So Apple's iPad product line in 2014 will be:

mini iPad
iPad
maxi iPad

I don't know if I like the sound of "maxi iPad."

There's also the question of which iOS a 5.7" device would run. iPad iOS would seemingly be cramped on such a screen, particularly if the 12.9" device is for real (a device more than 4 times as large). iPhone iOS, on the other hand, might look too stretched, even if it is optimized for a 4.7" screen.

Yeah I can't see them confusing consumers in that way. Apple tries to simplify choices for consumers, almost to a fault, and introducing such a blurred choice between two separate product lines doesn't seem to jive. But who knows, maybe it will/would work brilliantly.

I doubt Apple will go over 324 DPI anytime soon. Doing so would require devs to maintain yet another separate sets of bitmaps, and modify their touch target sizes.

That MBA res makes zero sense.

Presumably it's a 12-inch display to replace the 11-inch one. This makes sense for two reasons. Firstly the 11-incher has too much empty space around the screen. And secondly, they wouldn't have to increase it by that much to make it up to 12 inches. Despite its name, the 11-inch Macbook Air is closer to 12 inches than 11 at 11.6''.

But I see what you mean about 2304x1440. I don't like the numbers. I prefer my resolutions in round numbers, but at least it's 16:10. And if you do the maths, it comes out to slightly less than 4 times the pixels of the current 11-incher, but in a slightly larger area. So icons and graphics would appear larger than they do on the Retina Macbook Pro.

Why would Apple make an iPhone incompatible with all current apps for the sake of a couple of extra pixels? They might upgrade it to something like 1080p on a larger screen, but not 720p.

It needs to be worth the developers time... and a black border round older apps isn't going to be popular.

If they go down the larger screen route I hope they retain the current size, it's already a little too big for a phone in my opinion. A borderless screen at the current size would be nice.

I want to make phone calls without having to carry around a HDTV in my pocket.

The reason there had to be black borders around older apps during the transition from the 4s to the 5 is because Apple changed the aspect ratio of the screen from 4:3 to 16:9. So long as they keep the 16:9 screen ratio, older apps will be able to display just fine on newer, higher-resolution screens. They'll just be a touch less crisp, but with the fact that all of these displays will be retina displays, that will probably be very hard to notice in most cases, especially if Apple renders any text at the new, higher resolution. So I don't see this as a problem at all--bring on my 5.7" 1080p iPhad!

/drooling over thought of a 12.9" iPad... :D

I know it's not for everyone, but me likey. :)

Why is everyone so concerned about developers? It's their damn job. If a new screen comes out, they'll have to readjust their stuff. If not then tough ****. Someone else will do it.

Ahh i hope this 4.7" iphone is true. Dat bigger screen with LTE and smoothness of Safari? Uhh yeah. No more squinting eyes while inputting username and password and dat Django Unchained on 4.7"? And a bigger battery capacity? Damn, i miss you like i miss a rock in my shoes!

5,7"? Dunno, i think it's too big. I don't think i would ever want to call someone with a 5.7" phone on my face.

Well, I guess not having forethought and not building your platform for resolution independence comes back to bite you one day....

It's absolutely amazing that neither iOS, nor OSX have resolution independence baked in, in this day and age. I know that Apple controls the hardware, but we end up with limited choices.

I don't know why everyone wants a bigger phone... I like the iPhone 5S just the way it is...

Well, I for one am really interested in the possibility of getting a 5.7" 1080p phone to replace my iPhone 5 next year. When I upgraded from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5, I seriously debated going for the Galaxy Note II instead (but was eventually stopped by the thought of losing the investment I've made in iTunes music and videos, and iOS apps).

I have two reasons for wanting a screen that big:

a) They're drop-dead gorgeous, if you've ever seen one in person. I still find myself drooling over things like the HTC One Max and the Xperia Z Ultra....

b) I'm a pretty oversized person (6'7" tall, and my hand spans over 9" between my thumb and pinky when fully extended) so an oversized phone would be much more to scale in my case!
