I doubt Apple will go over 324 DPI anytime soon. Doing so would require devs to maintain yet another separate sets of bitmaps, and modify their touch target sizes.

A res change from 1136 x 640 to 1280 x 720, while seemingly minor would require a modification of their app assets/bitmaps. Also the touch targets wouldn't need to be modified with intelligent scaling. Although I still think Apple would prefer pixel doubling as they've done on 4 of their different products in the past.

Well, I guess not having forethought and not building your platform for resolution independence comes back to bite you one day....

It's absolutely amazing that neither iOS, nor OSX have resolution independence baked in, in this day and age. I know that Apple controls the hardware, but we end up with limited choices.

Personally I find it more amazing that Microsoft Windows, doesn't have resolution independence.

Currently we have a 4" phone, an 8" & 10" tablet, and an 11", 13" & 15" laptop.

I see a space in there for something at 6" if they wanted to have two sizes for phones as well as two sizes for tablets. But a 12" tablet only makes sense if they are going to retire the 11" Air. And if they do that, then they need to add a keyboard cover to that large tablet.

Bottom line is that have products at display sizes 2" apart can work, but anything closer than that and they just run into each other and create market confusion like all the other vendors seem to suffer from.

I know, this is just my humble opinion and Jony and Tim will do whatever they damn well want to do.:D

WTF people, why so much whining and bitching here? If you don't like a product, don't buy it. You feel 5,7" is too big, then don't cry here; just. don't. buy. it.

The issue is we hope Apple does not make more dud products. Like they did in the 90s and like the cube and ping and puckey mouse etc etc. And I think an iPhablet will be a dud.

Well, I for one am really interested in the possibility of getting a 5.7" 1080p phone to replace my iPhone 5 next year. When I upgraded from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5, I seriously debated going for the Galaxy Note II instead (but was eventually stopped by the thought of losing the investment I've made in iTunes music and videos, and iOS apps).

I have two reasons for wanting a screen that big:

a) They're drop-dead gorgeous, if you've ever seen one in person. I still find myself drooling over things like the HTC One Max and the Xperia Z Ultra....

b) I'm a pretty oversized person (6'7" tall, and my hand spans over 9" between my thumb and pinky when fully extended) so an oversized phone would be much more to scale in my case!

Hmm makes sense, Apple wants to compete on galaxy note size. Looks like that 5.7" will have a stylus.

I bet a larger screen iPhone would be a big success, not a mistake.

But how embarrassed will some be who can't pocket their phones? And 4" is the perfect screen size for fingers! What about having to hold up such huge tablets to their ears when making a call? And not being able to mock other people for having such a big phone?

What will people do?!?!?!? Mass hysteria!!!

My guess is as soon as Apple does release the bigger iPhone it will suddenly become a good idea. Remember this forum when the iPad mini rumors started?

Agreed. We currently have two sizes of iPad, Macbook Pro's, and Macbook Airs; software runs fine despite the fragmentation. It seems plausible that two sizes of iPhone could work.

I'm not sure one can call retina displays on MacBook Pro's fragmentation; OSX handles that all in the windowing UI, i.e., Mac's are already resolution independent.

Exactly. All iOS apps run full screen, so the app has to be much more aware of this than it does with OS X, where windows can be either fixed size or resizeable.

I believe iOS 6 and 7 have features that make scaling and positioning a bit easier without specifying fixed points for everything like I believe you had to in the original few iterations of iOS. They'll definitely need this if all these different screen sizes become a reality--there are already three (3.5", 4", and iPad/iPad mini) sizes to worry about, though it's likely the first will disappear soon. If you want to support non-Retina devices, then you will also need to versions of all scalar graphics. I can only imagine what adding one or two more screen sizes would do.

I would love a sligthly bigger iPhone (preferably with the old aspect ratio from the iPhone 3GS/4) and a bigger iPad, keeping the current aspect ratio.

I said the mini was a bad idea then and I still think it's a bad idea. It sells well but it has lower margins then I would like.

So you're speaking as a stockholder who wants more profits. Not as a consumer who sees benefit in a choice of sizes?

Last I checked, Apple was doing well financially. I wouldn't be too worried about their margins.

Why do you think it would be a dud when Samsung's Phablet is a success.

I sure don't mind if they offer a second size for the iphone. I'd actually be happy for those who've wanted it for a while. And I think it makes sense and there's a market for it.

But I sure hope they keep the option of a "smaller" phone for me. The screen can be bigger, but I love the size (width) of the current iphones (4-5).

iPhone 6, Q2 2014?

Yah I don't know about that one. That seems very early. And they've never gone that quick on a new version with a new redesign. Only the iPad 4 came out and that was just a lightning connector change and some minor spec bump.
