it’s like the iPad and iPad Air existing next to the Pro. Mess to explain to people.

I like the variations of product lines, but fully understanding yourself can take a lot of research.

For example: nowhere on the Apple website does it say the MBP 13" with 10th Gen Intel processor has a superior speaker system and dual cooling fans, resulting in better thermals. If functional differences like these were made clear to the customer, they would be able to make much more informed decisions.

Lining up the notches makes it look plausible for the 5.4" device, so I REALLY hope it's not this gimpy squished status bar experience on the 5.4". 😣

It's clear the notch is the same or virtually the same size as before. Perhaps it's smaller by a few mm. But many of us were looking forward to a 1/3 reduction as rumored along with the earpiece-bezel integration. I strongly suspect that it's the iPhone 5G Pro that will get the smaller notch.

This looks like a scrapped or incomplete display assembly. It's clearly missing the earpiece speaker and front sensor assembly at the top. The earlier leaked iPhone 5G logic board shows the same number of connectors as iPhone 11.
I see the speaker at the top... ???

I’m praying the 12 Pro has a smaller notch Lol. Seems like all of the leaks are of the 12 and not the Pro.

Definitely going to be a staggered release.

Not sure how it will be with 6.1” pro but the 6.7” pro will reportedly have same sized notch as other 12 models *however* more space on the top as the phones are a bit wider than previous gen in addition to the larger display size, and the Pro 12 models also will have thinner bezels than the current 11 Pro series (regular 12 series will be similar bezel to current 11 *Pro* phones, all thinner than XR/11)

So, tldr; will be able to display more information as a result. Some leakers on twitter have said it will be able to show battery percent for example

Doubtful that Apple will change size of notch. Making it a little smaller
Means nothing as it’s still there

Analysts are always talking about iPhone supercycles. Is iPhone 12 supposed to be a supercycle update? And does it mean that it will take a next full supercycle to get rid of the notch?

Supercycles nowadays kinda just refers to the next major redesign/upgrade. In this case, imo investors are mostly focused on 5G as a game changer (for whatever reason, I haven't spent enough time to find out, aside from what businesses can do with it in the future) -- but typically it refers to the redesign, which they now only really do every 3-4 years or so (iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 7s, [8]), (iPhone X, Xs, 11, upcoming 12) -- and although we're getting a redesign in the chassis (round to rounded off square) I think the display will stay the same. I honestly don't see them shrinking the notch for another 1-2 years, they have no reason to until they can get in-display fingerprint reading, put the front facing camera under the display, and maybe condense some faceID sensors. If they don't want for those things, they probably would be shrinking the notch too often.

Lining up the notches makes it look plausible for the 5.4" device, so I REALLY hope it's not this gimpy squished status bar experience on the 5.4". 😣

It'll have the same amount of space as any of the current iPhone's. The ears have always been that small.

What happened to the S year models this would be first year in long time going from 11 to 12 without 11S
Apple is under no obligation to follow any particular pattern with naming. We, the enthusiasts, perceive patterns and use them to predict future behavior, but those are only predictions. Apple has a tendency to use the “s” suffix when the chassis stays exactly the same and “only” the internals change. If they change the chassis every year, then incrementing the number follows their patterns.

What happened to the S year models this would be first year in long time going from 11 to 12 without 11S
iPhone has supercycle every three years just like the iPhone 7 to X no s model of iPhone 7 because 2017 is a supercycle and 10th anniversary of iPhone, and since this year will be the 3rd year since the last supercycle from 2017, there will be no “S” model for this year instead a new supercycle iphone that will be called an iPhone 12, and for future iPhone next year’s iPhone will be iPhone 12s, in 2022 it will be iPhone 13 and on 2023 it will be iPhone 14 no iPhone 13s because its the 3rd year of iphone since the last supercycle so its supercycle year again and there will be no s model.

why are they saying it's gonna be iphone 12? isn't it supposed to be 11s pro or something like that based on what Apple has been doing? i guess the media's trying to get as much attention as possible to make their articles click bates

so this iphone12 will be like iphone 8 then. The same design

if the notch stays the same, my iPhone 6s will have to last another year

I agree, for my 11 Pro Max. And Im on my carrier monthly upgrade plan so can upgrade every year, and have basically every year back to the 4S or 5S,; one I didnt upgrade that year.

But likely wont if these rumors come true. Same notch and no 120hz, no money from me this year. 5g whatever, it isnt even everywhere yet. Touch faster and square edges to cover with a case. Not for $1100+, Im out this year unless what I have to look at hours a day is improved. The phone performance is fast enough already, and battery life now all day; the display you stare at is becoming the most important thing.

That big notch isnt aging well in 2020; we can debate Face ID vs fingerprint (physical or in display) all day beyond that. To me personally, the big notch isnt worth it anymore.

If they cant slim it down after 4 years its time to move on or at least offer another variant all display with fingerprint (in-display I would guess, Apple has patents to do it and must be working on some fashion of it) and gauge the market; especially as masks are here to stay for a while and useless to Face ID

I don’t care about notch size. it doesn’t bother me. If I upgrade, (and I really don’t need to) my focus will be how the phone feels in hand (one-handed use possibility) as well as screen and overall performance.

You’re right, In terms of aesthetics, you only have the obsessive on sites like this that -scream and rant- that the notch should be eliminated or reduced by a fraction of a millimeter. To the average consumer, do you think they would actually notice any type of reduction? (Yup, that’s rhetorical) The bigger question is, would they (Consumers) care if the notch was even slightly reduced? (Another rhetorical). Absolutely not. It has no practical affect on a choice for a smart phone.

That's an assumption not evidence. Apple has no phone without a notch anymore; the SE really doesnt count it's a tiny display now and niche in itself.

You cant say people wouldnt want it because they buy what Apple offers now; there is no other choice unless you want to deal with Android and thus Google. There isnt a 3rd viable option really.

The only way to know is offer 2 variants and let the market decide. Big notch and Face ID or tiny camera cutout/punch and fingerprint in display. I think you would be surprised considering there are really no notches on the market anymore and one looks way more futuristic to average Joe than the other. The only choice now if you want a regular iphone is a notch

Ive never once heard someone say I really want to buy that iphone because the notch looks good; its a result of using certain tech. The notch is not a feature. You definitely hear people choosing some devices because how small the holepunch is and all display it looks.

Even the biggest Apple fan can admit this is classic Apple being Apple telling the customer what they want; for better or worse. Lets couple that with the rash of anti-competitive behavior with the App Store lately (just peek the other xCloud article today trying to ban competing streaming game services) and they are going to start pissing people off; even long time Apple fans.

Until you see embossed signatures of Apple employees, like the orig Mac, who did the redesign of the next great iPhone on the inside covers, the cycles will be normal iPhone cycles not supercycle.

Sorry, unless there is a big upgrade to faceiD I think I'll pass and look at the 11 instead.

yes pretty much like that except with a boxy type design and a new lidar scanner that only few will use, but still not as big as the upgrade of from iPhone 7 to iPhone X, so this year is a bit disappointment no 50x zoom, no 120Hz
