There’s a Surface event happening on Sept 22nd and rumours suggest a new Surface Pro 8 with smaller bezels, 120Hz displays, upgradable storage and Thunderbolt.

The Surface Book looks like it’s in for a radical design overhaul. It’s no longer likely to be detachable but will adopt a tilting screen hinge, similar to the Surface Studio.

Not sure how I feel about this. The Surface Book is the one design I really like and there is simply nothing else on the market that allows a full-size laptop and tablet to detach in the current form. Folded down, as a tablet this is going to be seriously heavy and thick.

This looks incredibly weird and like nothing I would want to use tbh. Even more niche than the old design

My feelings are mixed here. On one hand, I like the detachable screen... On the other, I rarely detach because I use the dedicated GPU much of the time. It also doesn't look like the screen is protected... hummm I will wait and see before passing judgement.

I mean it's an odd-looking device, but, Microsoft is good at a function over form approach. There is reason and likely a target market in mind, the portable version of the Surface Studio comes to mind.

Had no idea there was a Surface event this Wednesday, need a personal Windows PC. Was looking at existing Surface Books and nixed due to the price.

Thanks @The_Interloper

Hmmm… cancelled the iPad Mini 6 order.

As far as the possible Surface Studio redesign for the SB… I like it. May the floating hinge allow the screen to move out of the way of the keyboard.

If MS can make this a successful version of a mobile Surface Studio and Acer’s failed* Concept D laptop, great. Also improvements to the Surface Pen would be very welcome. Not a fan of the Pen at the moment.

Wait and see with the Internals etc.

*I’ve seen so many negative reviews for the Concept D, and I need a laptop with a screen that can lie flat. Was about to pull the trigger on an Asus 16” that has a hinge that allows for the screen to lie flat, so glad I checked this thread right now.

All that said, I understand why folks do not like this design and still want a detachable screen.

Are we sure that it's going to be called the Surface Book? to seems like a completely different device. It would be cool if the display is able to be pulled forward at different angles, all the way back for laptop-mode, maybe half way for when you want to watch content or play games, then lay flat for things like drawing and note taking.

It does look like a smaller version of the Surface Studio, it would be pretty cool if they did that. I'm just not sure how it would be used in tablet mode if the screen doesn't detach.

This does not appear to be a detachable screen. It looks as though it is designed with stability in mind. That hinge as odd a set-up as it appears will bring rigidity to the screen at whatever angle it sits.

That is why I am thinking portable Surface Studio. Nobody that would use that kind of device wants a screen that 'wobbles'.

It does not look clear how you use the keys though, looks like you have to put your fingers under the gap on that photo.

Granted it's probably aimed at arty types and not me, but that looks really awkward (and very heavy) and a retrograde step in usefulness over the current design. You can still get the 'drafting' angle on the current book by flipping the screen around and closing the laptop (so the screen is on the outside of the closed lid). Plus you get the fully detachable tablet functionality into the bargain.

Anyone else going to be watching the keynote today? (It’s ok 4pm U.K. time), I’m going to give it a watch and see what Microsoft have to show off.

after the Windows 11 reveal which was absolutely terrible, I'm good with reading the news after the "show"

Really? i thought Windows 11 looked good, that's coming from a Mac user!
nah, Windows 11 has one more UI theme on top of multiple old ones now. It's Windows 10 with a different taskbar (that misses a lot of features from the old one btw and is bugged as hell in the beta) and a new theme making the OS even more inconsistent.
The stream was a total mess on my end btw, bad quality, stuff like that.

It does, and its more then a reskin of windows 10. I think MS has done a lot to increase the consistency of the UI, though there's still more work to be done, but overall its a solid and highly recommend upgrade.

I had one issue, which was easily solved, though at the time I didn't know the steps. I'm running windows 11 now and its been fantastic. Its not at release candidate stage, but the developer release has been surprisingly stable - dare I say much more then what we've seen come out of Apple with their OS updates these past few years.

I really don't see the reason this release is called 11. It should have been a feature pack or what it was called in the past instead. How is this more than a reskin? What exactly did they change? I don't see it after using it daily for almost 2 months. Some ui changes here and there, hilarious patchwork like the old context menu with all the useful stuff hidden behind the new context menu in explorer, but beside that? It's also just as buggy and broken in places as 10. They did not fix anything for me with this major update.

Meh, I can see why, Its a major change to the UIX

Same, but I found it to be great - like I said a much better experience then when running a Macos beta

Ok, but your experience doesn't mean everyone's experience and from what I've seen on YT, read elsewhere its been a very good update, better then most others.

Its clear windows 11 isn't a good fit for you and your needs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ one size doesn't fit all

So I'm just unlucky then, check. I mean, Windows needed a new Design, as it was promised for how many years now? But I think that some rounded corners and a reworked start menu isn't enough. They promised to clean up all the leftovers from XP for how long now? And it's all still there.

I agree on the quality of MacOS updates though, that was some terrible qa. But the system itself (when it's working) is a pretty consistent experience (compared to Windows) that's not afraid to cut off ancient parts. Something I really hoped for in Windows

Not unlucky but rather your use case isn't the same as mine and others that I’ve come across. No doubt there are other people who ran into issue but that doesn’t mean it’s as bad update

I had a a beta corrupt/wipe out my fusion drive.

That's one of those things, where it can be good and bad. Look at Apple dropping 32bit support - talk about nightmares. Even now that repercussion is felt hugely in the gaming realm where Mac gaming on Steam plummeted

It's not a use case to experience a buggy taskbar, broken ui scaling and ui inconsistencies across the system :)

as I said: a working MacOS

well, no, there is a point where the downsides clearly prevent the system from evolving. But I'm not in charge of a software like Windows, so what do I know ;)

I've really not come across those issues, and as stated previously - this is a beta after all. Hell the first beta was pre-developer so it was pretty raw. I'm not making excuses but just pointing out the obvious that we're not talking about an OS that released for general consumption

Sorry I started this discussion in here, I'll stop now as it's not the correct place for it.

would a purchase of software be wiser to wait until windows11 is stable,
or would the developer (say affinity for instance) have a free upgrade
and compatible software for windows 10 that works with windows 11?
