Definately interested in the SP8 but I want to see some real-world usage reviews to see if the additional battery life is genuine.

Surface Studio Laptop actually looks nicer than I was expecting, the mockups made it look a lot clunkier. Basically a Surface Pro stood on top of a MacBook Pro topcase, stood on top of a cooling pad (also the display bears more than a passing resemblance to the iPad Pro, which is no bad thing IMHO). Assuming unlike the Surface book all configurations come with the dGPU that's actually surprisingly good value as well. It's a good thing the Mac has Apple Silicon, because Apple's lazy, uninspiring form factors are certainly starting to fall behind the competition. Not that long ago they were easily the best in class, now there's these, the XPS line, some honestly quite nice machines from HP in the Envy and Omen lines, even Razer offers more choice than Apple can muster. I know they're no longer a computer first company, but they're really starting to look uninterested. Even Apple Silicon is an offshoot of the effort they've put into the iPhone and iPad at the end of the day.

Ordered the SP8 with i5, 16gb, 256gb today. Really intrigued by the thinness of the device and the 120Hz screen. Did I make a good choice? I hear folks are concerned about the processors in these, is it a nerd debate over slim gains or should I reconsider my decision to purchase one of these?

Of course, this device is on trial for me so if I don't like it I will most certainly return it. There are some points where I really benefit from macOS (AirDrop, Messages) but I hope Windows is suffice for my student needs. I'm certainly not foreign to Windows, thankfully

Just been unhappy with my 2020 Intel MBP 13" (the $1800 one), programmes are slow to load for such a new and expensive device, even if it doesn't have an M1 chip. I also am just impressed by other displays like the Dell XPS's super thin bezels or now the SP8's 120Hz. Apple to me seems to be complacent with the rest of their hardware (screen, ports, gimmicks) simply because the M1 is pulling so much weight

I see the student, NHS and defence discount isn’t available for the new Surface devices yet. I wonder how long it will be before that happens.

Absolutely! I am jealous! Have fun with that beastly SP8!

Is the Surface Pro 8 good for gaming? When I say gaming, I don’t mean high end graphic games (I have my ps5 for that) I mean things like Age of Empires, Sims, two point hospital, those types of games.

I‘m not sure if I want to wait for the Surface Studio laptop here in the U.K. as it isn’t available until early 2022.

Cough cough iPad;)
The major difference is that the Surface Pro can run desktop level apps, whereas the iPad is limited to IOS/iPadOS apps. You get a whole new level of flexibility, and power to be able to run desktop apps.

That said, I think the iPad offers superior tablet experiences and if tablet usage was what I needed, well then I'd opt for an iPad and I infact did since I own a new iPad Pro

This is true. I realized that 90% of the time I didn't need a tablet, I needed a laptop. The other 10% I get along mostly fine. :)

Yup, on a surface, one can delete all and most files
while an iPad, there are 4-6 GB of other date floating around and can't be removed.
and iPad have primitive file sharing and changes the names
of video to numbers while exporting to saving to another source.

luckily there is a sandisk® lightning usb that keeps the original title of the iPad file.
which also serves as a readable disk drive for iPads.

Yes it will play all those types of games with ease. Intel has come a long way with their Iris graphics. You can even play many AAA games on medium settings and HD resolution.
