This poll needs another option - 'I had one and I don't anymore (not necessarily a bad experience)'

I had a Surface Laptop 3 from last April/May, I really like the hardware, but the battery life is/was garbage... then when the M1 came along - I sold the Surface at a hefty loss and bought the M1 MBA that I have now.

I do wish they'd update the actual Surface Studio with current guts, because that screen is amazing and I would love to have one of those

I had the original SurfaceBook and while the hinge design was odd, it was a really nice laptop. I have popOS on it, right now, though its just sitting on an end table untouched and unused.

I see the Surface Pro form factor as the future plus it's simpler so tend to be more reliable while the Surface Laptop Studio looks like a temporary form factor limited by current miniaturization of components. Perhaps with 3nm or 1nm node we'll have dGPU in the Surface Pro form factor.

This is disappointing to see from MS, seeing they just said their products will be more repairable. They designed this laptop to non-user accessible as possible.

Honestly, the FACT you have to remove the rubber feet to remove the SCREWS in worse than Apple.

Apple at least allows the back to opened without much effort.

Also doesn't it bother anyone that they call it Studio laptop and only offer 2 USB-C ports. They could have done 4 USB-C easily as the intel chips have PCie lanes to do so.

Other than that and the awful price, I might go see one next year(I live in Aus and its coming out next year).

Very excited to try out the hinge and play with it.

Mine went back yesterday.. The hinge just does not feel like it's going last.. I liked the SLS but I have worries about it's durability..
Yea I'm not sure on the hinge either. I worry about moving the screen so much, especially with how much force is required sometimes. Otherwise, the SLS is great and checks a lot of boxes. Windows 11 is pretty nice too!

Behind the screen is there cloth or fabric?
Felt like fabric to me... I think a metal hinge would have been better..

Also, holy mother of fan noise.. You get a free month of Xbox game pass so I played a few of the games included.. Good lord the fan is loud and tornado force...

aye. After all you did use the M1 MBA with no fans. :p

I actually found the fan noise to be very tame compared to some other laptops I've had in the past (looking at you 16" MBP...)

What specs do you have? Mine was the i7 with the GeForce RTX card... It was not bad doing normal tasks but holy smokes when playing a game...

I also have the i7 and 3050ti. Many laptops that I've played games on in the past have been very loud. The SLS is a couple steps quieter than the ones I've used before IMO.

Maybe it's because I came from a MacBook Air with no fan but good lord the SLS was loud and tornado force...

The hinge does appears to be a inherent flaw

My razer, a gaming PC, will have loud fans, so of course something like the SLS with a discrete GPU will require some aggressive fans

What games were you playing that your fans ramped up. I suspect if you used Intel Extreme Tuning or Throttlestop, you could have tweaked the laptop and improved the temps. I do that for my desktop and i'm saving at least 10c with various settings.

Yup, we were talking about Linus' video this sunday in the thread ;)
Here is a review from Brad Colbow, admittedly from a creative/drawing point of view. He seems quite enthousiastic about the Studio. Also he thinks the fan noise is very low. The pen (jitter) seems to be much improved.

Mind you, I did not experience the SLS myself (I have no need for it), but I thought a link to a review with a different angle could be useful as well.

EDIT: He does not mention the hinge much. At the end of the video he also states that reviews of the new Surface Go and Surface Pro are coming up. The pen (jitter) seems to be much improved, so that is good news for the creative persons among us ;) . But if anyone creative is in doubt about the hinge on the Studio, maybe the new Surface Pro is an alternative.

I had the same concern as well. I can't take a chance on the SLS for school because it's not dependable. It was a great machine otherwise. Looking forward to getting the new M1 MacBook instead.

I would recommend holding off until Apple's Event next week and you get to see the latest 16" MBP - granted it may be more then you want, but holding off allows you to make an educated decision

Same I'd wait and see what Apple reveals in a few days. That said you'll still need to weigh up the pros & cons of the new design. Personally I went with the M1 MBP as it's a tried and proven chassis and see how the new models fair over the course of the first year or so.

On the SLS I think it will be OK as much the same was said of the Surface Book with the detachable display as that too was revolutionary and they were generally reliable. Admittedly I've yet to see the SLS and again a 1st Gen product, equally familiar with MS hardware. I think the SLS is so very different it just throws people off as they are not used to such a hinge mechanism.

As for school pick the OS that works best with your curriculum and or IT systems. For professional use and education being a little conservative can pay dividends as the last thing you need is problematic hardware at the wring times. Nor would I purchase in the first 3 months of production as it does take time for the factory's to dial in the manufacturing processes.

Q-6
