The screen portion of my SLS has already left black markings from the screen resting by the trackpad...

Yeah. This thing is going back. I've noticed weird screen glitches on the portion by the bending mechanism. The screen feels super fragile as well. There are actual gaps along the lid, too. Nope. Also, this thing is incredibly heavy.
Well that sounds terrible tbh. Looks like it’s not ready for prime time yet or that you have been really unlucky đŸ˜’

Ah, I’m sorry to hear that, but unfortunately not surprised: I worried about scratches in that position the very first time I saw Panos demo it at the event, and every time since. It’s metal on metal, and you can drag the screen forward and back from the position. A perfect recipe for scratches!

I'm pretty disappointed for sure. I've really been enjoying the SLS otherwise. I've actually been enjoying Windows 11. I prefer it to Mac OS surprisingly.

To me the SLS sits in the wrong size category, it would be belter served as a 15" - 17" with more powerful internals. That said Microsoft's issue is likely scale as comparatively few Surface notebooks are produced & sold in comparison to Apple's MacBook Pro's.

Personally I tend to wait 6-9 months after release prior to purchase as it does take the design company and it's OEM's time to settle down with a new device. No doubt minor adjustments are made to the BOM and production process to enhance the customer experience or simply engineer out error.

Can you post pictures of your gaps and marks :)

MKBHD shows the gaps in his video; they are the same as his. Here are the marks. There’s a similar one on the other side. They keep getting worse. I’ve only had the SLS for about four days now. The marks are darker in-person.

Also, my screen flickers occasionally as well. I’m not sure if that’s an OS issue, though.

Interesting. On mine, there's a very small space that separates the screen and the outer shell but it's uniform all the way around the screen and it looks like it's the same for other laptop owners online so I assume that's just the design.

I've had mine for a few days and have moved between laptop, stage, and studio mode more than a couple dozen times. I don't have the black marks (yet). I did run my finger along the edge that rests where your black spot is and there is a piece that sticks out (I think this is where the magnets are). I could see that piece scratching the surface over time. Do those black marks wipe off with your finger or a damp cloth?

I agree that the screen/hinge seems flimsy, though I quickly got the hang of moving it between the three positions. I will say that moving it up from the studio position (where it's laying flat) is the hardest. My only concern with the screen/hinge is how it will hold up after a couple of years and hundreds/thousands of movements. I like to think that they've tested this though!

Overall, the form factor is really cool and I really like the possibilities of this device. I've used iPads a lot and Windows 11 feels great to use in both laptop and tablet modes.

I am experiencing this issue that someone else posted here:
@drinkingtea If you haven't sent your laptop back, would you mind trying this out on your laptop and seeing if it's the same?

I don't have that trackpad issue; mine is very responsive. The black spots can't be cleaned off. I might try Magic Eraser and see if that helps.

This is such a bummer. I'm enjoying the form factor and Windows 11. I don't want to give up either, but I've never had issues with MacBooks and that might be the safest option for school considering my worries about the SLS.

Yeah, I saw it - he was largely impressed by the laptop, though as he tries to open it up, it was painfully clear that like prior surface laptops - its basically sealed.
You can replace it, you just have to closely follow the forum posts that detail how to do so--not just wing it. :) Not for the faint of heart. Obviously the SP8 is much easier to replace. :)

Writing this on this:

Device name SurfaceGo3
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU GOLD 6500Y @ 1.10GHz 1.61 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Pen and touch support with 10 touch points

Surface hinge/kickstand is the best in class IMO
Windows Hello is neat.
Windows 11 is easy on the eye, stable.

Kinda heavy, battery doesn't last long, can get warm to hold.
portable device, still not a good tablet, despite the Windows 11 Touch improvements.
Will return in within the 2 week deadline.
Fingers crossed for lighter, redesigned Go X (ARM 3. Gen) next year.

Why not just self-improvement? Like all of us, in 2020, he was in quarantine - clearly he did something positive at that time

Lisa posted her review, she spends a lot of time delving into the positives and negatives to everything she reviews, she's one of my go-to channels for reviews - along with LTT

Subscribed to both for many a year...

So far, Lisa's the only one that gave me an actual use case for propping the screen in front of the keyboard, and how its actually superior to a tablet or surface pro in that sense. You're scrolling through reddit or watching a video, and then you suddenly want to respond. The SLS offers the simplest solution to regain access to the keyboard.

I'm still not a fan of the design, but at the very least she's provided some actual scenarios on how it could be useful
