Hopefully this time around they don’t rip people off with the storage upgrades. That’s one thing I wish they hadn’t copied from Apple.

I’ve noticed that Apple have even reduced the price on some of their SSD upgrades. Let’s hope Microsoft makes theirs cheaper as well.

Also a black version of the Book 3 would be nice, doubt it will happen tho.

The Apple SSD upgrade pricing is still eye-watering, usually a bit more than double what it should actually cost. Other OEMs like Dell and Lenovo aren’t nearly this bad, it’s a shame that Microsoft have done the same as Apple. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could do storage upgrades ourselves but that tiny SSD in the Surface Laptop 3 is so obscure it may as well not exist as an option. :(

The SB 2 is even still correlated to Apple's (outrageous) 2016-19 pricing strategy, hopefully they will make similar value concessions to the SB lineup as Apple did with the new 16" Pro. I know Microsoft don't have quite as much room for manoeuvre, because of wanting to leave some breathing space for other OEMs, but the Surface lineup looks really egregiously priced at the moment! I hold out a tiny fragment of hope they might do a quick and dirty refresh to the Surface Laptop 15", bringing the 4000 series AMD CPUs and doubling storage across the board, would take it from a painfully overpriced anachronism to what it's meant to be - a really great showcase machine!

While MS prices are not quite in the $700 for a set wheels category LOL

There is some possible justification over Apple as simply the volume of production is a small fraction of Apples

It may well show up or assumed as SSD costs between models but possibly attributed to other production/distribution costs

Look forward to the GO M3 update especially if NEO/DUO are delayed

MS GO with the new M3 should be a lot snappier, the original Pentium was a big turn off for me.

Apple prices seem to be getting out of control, £349 for a Keyboard and trackpad case, £650 for some Mac Pro wheels, along with rumours of the iPhone 12 getting a price hike.

The iPhone is already expensive for the Pro model, of Apple increase cost further it’s going to be ridiculous. I don’t mind paying for quality and for something that’s great, however IOS now seems outdated. I recently tried out a Note 10 that belongs to a friend, it feels a lot more modern than Apples IOS. You can’t even change the theme on the iPhone. I’m seriously considering the jump to the Not 20 when it’s announced in August.

As for the Surface, the prices for SSD upgrades seem rather higher. It will be interesting to see what they price the Surface Book 3 at.

Indeed, and they will continue as long as people are willing to pay ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You don't have to really dig too deep here at MR for people justifying the wheels, or the 1,000 monitor stand, never mind out on the interwebs.

I don't mind paying a premium price for a premium product, but 700 dollars for wheels, or a 1,000 for a piece of bent aluminum, is ludicrous.

My only apple products currently are iPads and iPhones, and I don't see myself dropping that, but that doesn't mean Ill be buying the iPhone 12, I'm eyeing the SE myself, and probably the XR for my wife/kids later this summer.

64GB of Ram in a 16" is an $800 upgrade. Or 1000€ over here in Germany. That's just ridiculous... but people pay for it so they keep doing it.

I would like to see a (thicker) Surface Book using a Ryzen 4000 CPU, not the U model, that would be great.

I use both Android and iOS (two phones) and I wouldn't call one more modern than the other, there are still a lot of things that annoy about both but overall, these are very mature OSes that do the job fine. I would give the edge to Android on phones (wearables and tablets is another story) but iOS has higher quality apps.

I can only speak of the brief time I had with the Note 10 that a friend let me play around with. We were talking about iPhones and other devices. After playing around with the Note 10 I did feel like I was missing out on something, if that makes sense?

The iPhone is limiting in that you can't change a lot, my friend was saying how he still hasn't figured out all the settings and customisations on his Note 10. For example on the Note and other Android devices, you can change the theme, you can't even do this on the iPhone. The S-Pen also seems really useful.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate my iPhone 11 Pro Max, it has been a solid device, I just feel like Apple are years behind when it comes to the look and feel of IOS. It's time Apple let people change things like the theme and more settings, also a smaller Apple Pencil to challenge the S-Pen and Note device wouldn't go a miss either.

It seems new and exciting having had a brief fiddle with your friend's phone but believe me when you use a device every day the annoying stuff becomes more apparent and you'll start wishing for certain things you took for granted on your iPhone! I agree that we're long due some customisation on iOS and if the rumours are true that we can finally place widgets wherever we want and set some default apps come iOS 14 then I will be a happy camper.

Contrary to MacOS Apple really has a loyal iOS/iPad OS customer in me and my family. There is just nothing like it if you and your wife/kids want to live an easy life.
I have my problems with it, bugs and all that, but there is no way I'll give up the iOS ecosystem.

is Android really that bad? I was thinking about the swap over to a Note device, but maybe I should think twice?

I don't think its bad, but its different, plus Apple provides a lot of integration and services that enhance the experience, where you may need apps on the google side. The problem is what apps? Google for instance has numerous messaging apps.

There are more risks in the google app store as google largely takes a hands off and malware does exist,

Certainly not bad, just different as @maflynn has said. Depends what you use and need. Even on my old iPhone SE I never used iMessage as all my contacts here in Europe use WhatsApp. I am not a big user of apps so Android is not a limitation to me.

I didn’t realise this, I’m just use to downloading apps from the App Store on my iPhone and not having to worry about viruses.

I’m also in Europe (the U.K to be exact) and I don’t really use iMessage all that much, I just use Facebook messenger and txting. I haven’t got a big selection of apps on my iPhone (I still use a 64GB iPhone). I have got iCloud storage for my photos and Apple Music. I use twitter and Facebook the most, other than that it’s the Alexa app, some banking apps and Amazon. That’s it. Oh and YouTube but I use that more on my iPad Pro.

I recently tried to add my son and daughter as family members to my goggle account, so we can share YouTube Premium for music and ad free YT. IT was a disaster, really. In the end my kids are now both a lot older than they are to make it work.

iOS on the other hand just works. Backups are a thing, family sharing works great (if you ignore in app purchases...). My son uses an old iPhone at home, he can FaceTime with it, write iMessages to family members, enjoy some apps I bought and I could restrict and control him if needed. After using the Google Family app website and app, yeah, good luck with that lol.

I also bought tons of stuff over the years, and they can just install all of that.

I have a big iTunes library of TV shows and movies. Music not so much, I’m subscribed to Apple Music. I’ve been an iPhone user since the 3GS.
The same with iPad, I’ve been using those since around iPad 3. I tried a Surface Pro 6 last year and I couldn’t get along with Windows, even tho the hardware was great. Even tho I do regret selling it and wish I had kept it to maybe see if I would of gotten use to it with more time.

I don't think the user is saying that Android is bad, it's just that the iOS ecosystem is very cohesive and high quality across the board and the family management stuff is easy.

It's not something you need to worry about, if you're posting on Macrumors chances are you have an eye for it and can see the malware apps from a mile off.

In the past I have used (and still have) iPhone 3GS, iPhone 5C and iPhone SE. At work over the years (in a few countries due to my job) I was issued with and used Motorola Startac (my first mobile phone in 1998) and a variety of BlackBerries.

Now retired and living in Finland, 6 months ago I decided to try Android for the first time. Not a lover of large phones, the "smallest" good one I could find and purchased was the Samsung Galaxy S10e. There was a bit of a learning curve but not overly problematic. There is more freedom to change things with Android of course and I am/was pleased with Android 10 and how Samsung deals with most things. Monthly updates (software and security) are coming monthly although they may cease after 2 years (at least the software ones). After being used to so easily slipping the iPhone SE into shorts pockets or from jeans pockets when heading out for a run or bike ride or the pub, the S10e was a bit of a shock weight and size wise. But that is not Android's fault. That is the state of the phone industry in general. I suppose it is partly due to the fact that many people in the developing world (and some young people in the first world) do not have the funds and/or interest in having more than one device. Therefore the large phone is their communicator, tv and movie screen and computer.

Anyway, as my wife needs a new phone to replace an old Galaxy, I am giving her the S10e and I will be receiving the new iPhone SE in a few days (if shipments are not delayed). It is slightly smaller and lighter than the S10e but as we all know, nothing like the original SE. I looked at the iPhone 11Pro but it is just more than I want to pay for a device.

All this to say, both iPhone and Android have good features and you can't really go wrong either way.

Nothing about any hardware tweaks, prices and specs are interesting tho.

CPU choice should be pretty clear though, no? There aren't too many options if you want to use an i7u. We will see what kind of GPU they put into the base though.

it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with this upcoming Surface Book 3. There haven’t been any updates for a couple of years, since the Surface Book 2.
