3. Minneapolis does have a great 3G reception. I attend college in Duluth (2 hours north of Minneapolis) and AT&T just rolled out 3G up here recently. Great signal and good speeds

2 hours? Even on a good day, I have to ask you how fast you drive...and last summer...egads!

And yes, I had coverage on the entire I-35 corridor between Duluth and Mpls...although a few spots were Edge...and no, I wasn't behind the steering wheel.

Curious (apologies if mentioned previously) - what AT&T might offer to sweeten the deals to keep subscribers. Thought that free tethering for one device might be nice. Will they reduce monthly rates?

CDMA v. GSM

I haven't seen a single post explaining the difference between CDMA and GSM (admittedly I did skip a few pages).

For all those waiting to switch to Verizon because of dropped calls you're missing the point. Verizon can tout no dropped calls because when you make a phone call that's all your phone can do, it lacks a data connection which actually contributes to the increase in drops when you're making a call on a data network. It takes up a single line in a similar way to how the iPhone works on the Edge network.

Try a little experiment. Turn 3G off of your iPhone. When you make a call, you can no longer surf the web and talk on the phone. Amazingly your dropped call rate with AT&T will be equal to that of Verizon. Comparing CDMA service to GSM service is really like comparing apples to oranges. They just don't compare because they work in completely different ways.

If you're that worried about drops, go to an Apple Store and have them show you your dropped calls. They have a diagnostic that displays the number of drops the phone is responsible for.

But I'm also like most iPhone users. I'll be happy when all those folks switch because it will free up bandwidth for me.

I think it so funny people complain about dropped calls.
I probably only use my iPhone for calls for about 20 mins per month........
Data is where its at.

OK, you live in Cincinnati, so this will be relatively easy. Walk into any building on the University Hospital or Cincinnati Children's campus (we're talking multiple whole city blocks) and try to make a phone call or surf the net. You will not be able to. There's your first experience of no service with AT&T, apparently. But, before you leave the building, look around and you'll see all these people talking on their cellphone. Strange, right? They all have something in common though, they all have Verizon.

I don't doubt you speak the truth, to some extent. However I doubt AT&T has zero capability there, but I will check it out when I can. And even so, I am confident there are areas throughout the country were each carrier has an inability to connect, including Verizon. My Verizon phone used to not connect down in rural Walton, KY where AT&T did. The exceptions for either network would be rare though. But I travel literally millions of miles each year with my iPhone. No problems. Just today, my iPhone will be used in Hartford, Atlanta and D.C.. Tomorrow will find additionally in Dallas and Ft Meyers.

I'm an airline pilot, and have used the AT&T iPhone, since it's inception, in nearly every state in the Union. 3G or voice reliability/quality has never been an issue for me. Have I had dropped calls? of course. But at no greater amount than I did on my Verizon phone I used to own. Both, totally acceptable. And when Verizon adds millions more subscribers, they will have an increase in reliability issues and hits on their bandwidth as well.

But when it comes to completing a call while simultaneously using data, CDMA is 100% unreliable. For me, that matters more than maybe a couple more dropped calls per 100, that AT&T may experience. But hey, switch. It will motivate AT&T to lower rates, and it will reduce system load for those us that remain with AT&T.

Is this based off of the signal you get at the Airport only? Just Curious.

While I dont sit in a left or right seat, I work in the industry and possibly support some of the things you use.
Anyway, When my company used AT&T, I had terrible times at many airports, different phones as well, so it wasnt the device.
I finally got fed up and picked VZW as my personal phone provider, that way I could always be in touch with my family while I was away.

These threads are old and moldy.

The wars over folks!

Where was this supposed survey taken? NYC? SanFran? Other than those two places, I bet the rest of us get pretty good service. I'm certainly not switching away from ATT. I had VZ once upon a time, and while their coverage was pretty good, they could never get the billing right, and they charged for every damn little thing.

I get great coverage on ATT, and it's faster than VZ, and I can talk and surf at the same time. And while I haven't had the need for it yet, I can actually use my phone overseas. The bill I get from ATT is also accurate 99% of the time. The few times it's been off, ATT has been very good about getting it corrected. I have had a good experience on ATT, better than both of my previous carriers, so I don't know what the complaining is all about.

You lost your bet.

I know many areas in Santa Monica and Los Angeles where I can't make calls or do much else, even though it gives me one bar. It's always odd how I can get great signals in one area but in just less than a block away I lose all.

And this is all outdoors btw.

Downtown. I of course land at the airports and use the service there, but I layover in the cities and surrounding areas as well.

Hola Tia Juana

I had Verizon but I've switched to AT&T solely so I can have the iPhone. I live in San Diego, about 25 miles from the border and I got repeatedly paired to a Mexican service called "mobistar" and of course got charged roaming fees. It occurred so frequently that after my n-th complaint the rep suggested that they turn off some feature on my service. She said, it frequently occurs in my area, I am not the only one who complains, there is nothing they can do about it!!! So they turned something off and I no longer get paired to mobistar but I now barely have any service! Nothing at the bed, a little near the computer, nothing in the middle of the room, some in the kitchen, better on the patio. I NEVER see better than 3 bars, and usually only 1 or 2 or nothing. For those who live in SD: I live in Point Loma, near the Bay side, just a block from the water, across from Shelter Island. Not exactly the boondocks. I CAN see Mehiko from the general area but it is 25 miles away, the nearest AT&T tower must be incomparably closer! I am SO ready to switch back, it is not even funny.

Let me see. I would lose:

1. My discount
2. My rollover minutes
3. Voice and data.
4. Network speed

All of this to switch to a company who has been fined multiple times by the FCC for billing practices. I'll pass thank you.

Honestly. I switched to AT&T from Verizon because although the service was good, everything else about them was terrible. From the poor/snobby customer service, to being nickel and dimed on many phone bills.... I get a better discount with AT&T, anyway.

I don't know why everyone is praising Verizon like they're Jesus.

People always complain that AT&T sucks, but I have never ONCE had a dropped call and I've been with AT&T for like 8 years. :/ Plus whenever I actually need to go into one of their stores they are ridiculously friendly.

it all depends on how close you are to the tower, is the same here in canada, im on rogers and ive never dropped a call from my side, the only calls that actaully dropped were ones with iphone4s on the other end, and a couple going through a tunnel on the train (whats strange is if i go though the tunnel without hanging up, the line goes dead but reconnects when i get out)
