I have no reason to switch. Where I live there is no Verizon coverage, but ATT offers excellent coverage :D.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

An interesting follow up question would be "When you switch do you plan to use your existing iPhone or buy a new one?".

I'd suspect a good portion of existing iPhone owners surveyed think they can use thier GSM iPhone on verizon...

Yes, chatted with customer service on-line tonight. Unbelievable.

I would call back again and re-verify that claim with another AT&T rep. I've never heard of something like that before. Getting a new handset does not include a downgraded data or voice plan.

Well. It's going to finally be time for Verizon to "man up" and see if they can hold iPhone's load. That is, once enough people on the network have one. Something which shouldn't be too long of a wait.

For me, if there are a high number of switchers, that'll be a win-win situation for consumers. Let's just hope Verizon doesn't buckle under the weight. I foresee AT&T customers getting more competitive rates and a bump in service, as long as all goes well with the Verizon phones.

A company whose only concern is the next few months is a company that won't exist after those few months. What AT&T should really be concern about are the switchers over the next 18 months. This is when the vast majority of people will be done with their contracts and free to move. I think this is when AT&T is going to feel the most hurt, not over the next few months.

The call quality is not great but I can deal with that. The reason I will be switcihg to Verizon is that there are quite a few hours in the day when web browsing on the iPhone via 3G is impossible! Absolutely no connection at all and it's been a big issue for way too long.
Verizon CAN'T be worse and since my contract is up, I'll give them a shot.:)

...OH and tethering! :D

People say one thing and do another, we have to remember.

VZW is more expensive too-- most people don't realize that.

well, I guess that is close to 100% of iPhone users in Cambridge MA.

ATT really sucks here. There is a gaping hole in coverage about 300yards right around my house. you get at best 1 bar and a dropout every 5 minutes. it plain sucks and this has been like this for at least three years.

I work in Cambridge MA, and have 5 bars most of the time and can't remember the last time I dropped a call while at work. I won't be switching. Just goes to show the whole switching issue is going to be about personal coverage in particular spots. I think the best thing that can happen for AT&T is for people with bad coverage to jump, making the network better for the rest of us.

Then the complaining will start with Verizon :)

What's going to be interesting is if the iPhone continues to have dropped calls on veriozon, pointing to the iPhone being the problem not att's network

I'll stay if you let me have a personal hotspot with my unlimited data plan :D

I think this is the main problem with AT&T for most.

I know, there are areas where they have bad reception and dropped calls - don't have this problem where I life and had reception problem only once during travel. So yes, people from those bad areas will switch for sure.

The problem I have with AT&T is that they are so slow in 'enabling' new features. This became obvious with several iOS features where the rest of the world was already enjoying them and AT&T was dragging their feet in enabling them. Back than I was blaming missing competition - but seeing the rumors that they are still not committed to enable the personal hotspots - that stinks and just show that they either don't care about their customers or have no clue what they want/need (esp. seeing that other carries have no problem enabling that stuff)

Dropped calls do happen no matter how good network and phone is. There are so many variables that you can't just simply track it down to a phone or network. There is no global dropped calls tsunami here, so what's your point really?

there are a ton of carrier fanboys on this thread. I don' really understand whats the point of being a carrier fanboy. I can undersand being an apple or google fanboy. But anyways you buy the phone you want then choose whatever carrier has most coverage around you

I can't blame anyone for getting better coverage, as I know in larger cities AT&T has poor coverage and outside of major cities it's even worse. I'm lucky enough to live in little... bit city (KC) that is nice and spread out, flat and has rather good AT&T coverage. I consistently get between 4 and 6.5mbps down, 1 to 2up on data and frankly the no data + voice at the same time is a no sale for me. I would enjoy the hotspot feature w/o JB my iPhone but MyWi suits my needs until AT&T decides to get in the game.

Bottom line, the more people that bail, the more competitive AT&T will get with hotspot, unlimited plans etc... Sounds like a win/win for those leaving, and those staying. :)

You are correct. It's a childish game of penis envy. Mine's bigger/badder than yours

I have great coverage with AT&T over here in Dallas...I will definitely be sticking to AT&T...

Survey says:

Survey says: Who cares?

Seriously, who care what these surveys say? It is hypothesized data. What about the MILLIONS of iPhone owners that were not subject to a pole from any of the reporting sources.

I plan on switching (coverage issues). I was not subject to any pole nor were the countless personal friends I have that are all iPhone users. We all talked about it, that's for sure.

It not all about switching to jump ship, there are going to be plenty of people that will consider their options with Verizon once their contract with AT&T ends. Right now, it will be in Verizon's best interest to kiss major butt and to win over their new iPhone customer base in effort to keep them. Let's face it, iPhone users make up the higher tier of expense with their phone and plan, it would be nice if the service provider would treat them as such (kinda hard to do in the wait in line, grab and go cellular phone business).

I'm staying

I'm staying with AT&T. I left Verizon to join AT&T for the original iPhone. I travel for work and I am always on the road. My overall experience has been good with AT&T. The data is fast and there are very few dropped calls.

My wife is still on Verizon and several times I've had service when her BB has not.

<edit>I would really like to see AT&T offer the personal hotspot for free. That would certainly help.</edit>

Same deal here in Houston TX. Service is fine in a lot of parts of the city, but where I live (3 miles from Downtown) I often drop out of 3G and EDGE and end up with GPRS (the little "O" symbol) or no data at all. Often my phone doesn't ring and messages go straight to voice mail when I am at home. AT&T says it's because I live indoors and there are a lot of trees near by...

Here in The Woodlands the coverage is spotty, but overall not that bad. I'm on WiFi as often as possible anyways, so I won't bother switching. I've had really good service everywhere in Houston I've been. I lose signal in some buildings, but in that case usually everyone else does too.

I don't understand why people always complain about AT&T. They keep their network up to date, I have only had a few dropped calls in the year I've had my iPhone (in the single digits probably) and my 3g speeds are great.

Plus, I'm not sure if many people know this, but on the Verizon network you CAN NOT surf the web / do other things on your iPhone while you are on a call. Instant kill for me. Can I tell you how many times I look something up with someone on the speaker? I don't want to have to hang up every time!

The only thing I may consider changing to Verizon for is unlimited data and the mobile hotspot. But you do pay an extra 20 bucks for that, which is what AT&T charges anyway and I couldn't see myself using that all that much.

I have had iPhone 3G and ATT since 3G came out. ATT will not allow me to continue my current unlimited data plan if I upgrade, I will be speaking to Verizon. If ATT wont work with a loyal longterm customer maybe Verizon will?

I'd try someone else; I kept my plan when I upgraded to iPhone 4, they told me that the rate plan didn't change, just the device. ::checks AT&T statement:: I used over 5 GB of data last month, and I don't even use tethering. The smaller rate plan would never work for me.

So, your saying that just because you don't have any problems with AT&T you can't wrap your head around the concept that other people do.

Coverage is different in different locations.

AT&T seems to be useless in large densely populated cities like SF, NY, Vagas, L.A. Dallas and so forth.

in a bubble

surveys like this are always fascinating, but they still live in a hype bubble. yes, some people are going to switch, especially if they're at the end of a plan, or haven't had a new iPhone since 3G or 3GS.

i bet the number becomes more like a 5-7% switch.

AT&T's coverage in Houston is pretty stellar, I doubt it all of the sudden get's worse in Dallas. AT&T are based out of Texas, so the coverage here ought to be pretty good.
