Thats because most dont know how it feels to be living in a screwed up service area like New York and San Francisco Bay Area.

I couldn't even be on a con call without dropping several times. Eventually I had to look for a land line.

you can add the farmington valy CT. to your list.

I just switched from an iPhone 3GS to a Droid X not because I dislike the iPhone but because I was SOOO SICK of AT&T and constant dropped calls and network unavailability. Verizon is amazing, by the way :). I do not believe this survey or I do not believe that much of the sample were truly iPhone users. I know four people who just left the iPhone because of the poor network availability both at home and in places we travel for work. Verizon and AT&T are like day and night where I live in a midwestern city. Also, when I travel to Chicago or the East Coast Verizon is amazingly better too.

AT&T has consistently better reliability and MUCH better data speeds than Verizon in the Chicago area.

Same is true for many regions of NJ - especially in terms of data speeds.

The added benefit of Voice + Data has become an increasingly valuable advantage, in terms of time efficiency and productivity, not to mention the advantage of using the iPhone overseas.

AT&T is horrid here in Denver. I haven't used 3g here in months. Horrible!!!!

Wow, I am in Broomfield and have had the best service that I have ever had since coming to AT&T in July of 2007. Our service has improved 100% since September once they announced that they improved the signal inside buildings. I think I have had one dropped call in all these months.

there's definitely a 'moment' between these two guys.

not too sure about the use of the phrase in the article "rubbing off" either.

AT&T has really good coverage in Columbus and Cincinnati Ohio. I've always been happy with the service and haven't had many issues with the iPhone 4. I can't speak for too many other areas, but places I used to travel for my previous job (Detroit, Baltimore/Aberdeen, San Antonio) had good coverage as well (with my 3GS and Blackjack before that).

As a person who lives and works in Cinci I disagree. I have had numerous dropped calls and times when data does not work at all even though I have bars showing. It gets pretty bad during lunch time in downtown cinci. That is not just my experience as well. I know of two other iPhone users who complain of the same thing. Even prior to having an iPhone my AT&T blackberry 8800 also had dropped calls and data connect issues. Meanwhile my work issued Blackberry has never had dropped call or data issues.

I am seriously contemplating this as well. I love my iPhone and it works great data wise at home when it is on my wifi network. Data sucks downtown Cinci and have had numerous other problems as well for data in other places I have travelled to where my work issued blackberry on verizon works fine. If there is no iPhone on verizon when my contract is up I may jump to a Droid.

The customer service I have received was great and my Droid X that I am now using because the iPhone is locked to AT&T is certainly not crippled.

Here's the thing with the 'Verizon cripples their phones' meme. It *used* to be true, but these days, it's not true to the same degree. (Their non-smartphones still get the 'cripple-me' treatment.)

Unfortunately, like any bad reputation, it takes a lot longer to fade than to become false. Back in the day, Packard Bell made decent computers. (Yes, this is *WAY* back in the day.) Then, they started cutting corners and using really low-quality components, and even non-standard stuff that made them difficult and expensive to upgrade or fix. As a result, they garnered a *really* bad reputation for quality, and it was deserved. Years later, they'd gone back to all standard bits, decent quality components, and had a pretty good product. Unfortunately, the 'Packard Bell computers suck' meme outlasted the company. People didn't buy their gear because they 'knew' it sucked. Without people buying their gear, they went out of business *despite* the fact that their gear was actually pretty good in the end.

I dont see why they shouldnt be. Its ATTs job to provide a cellular connection, and they do exactly that.

Yep. Ditto with the meme that Verizon doesn't have decent phone choice. Hard to say that now.

Verizon puts the same basic UI menus on all their dumb phones because it makes it easier for their customers to move between models.

And it works. You can pick up any Verizon dumb phone and already know how to find all the settings or actions.

As far as crippling smartphones, Verizon always allowed their customers access to other app stores, UI customization, and using all apps (even Skype or Slingplayer) over 3G. Basically, they left their smartphones alone.

The only item they kept locked down until a year or two ago, was access to their proprietary AGPS setup. I credit the iPhone and others for breaking that last wall.

Great Service in Upstate NY

I am guessing that their offer to let people upgrade to the iPhone 4 a year earlier had a lot to do with this.

That and the fact that though AT&T reception/network is atrociously bad in high population density areas like NY and LA, it's network and reception is fantastic in most of the rest of the country.

I get 100% reception and barely any dropped calls in Montana, but when visiting my family in NY, I dropped 4 out of every 5 calls I tried to make!!!

So based on where I live now, I would say very satisfied. If I ever moved to NY however, you can add me to the list of vocal complainers.

I live in upstate NY and must say I get great service.
