I enjoy using Apple Pay, but there are a few things that Apple needs to do to improve its adoption:

1. Add Face ID support for masks. If I need to wear a mask in a store, then I prefer to use physical credit cards because it's really annoying to wait for Face ID to fail and then unlock my phone with the passcode.

2. Put substantial effort into supporting driver licenses and IDs of all 50 states along with employee IDs, student IDs, gift cards, etc. Make it easy and proactively get organizations on board with this. My physical wallet has a bunch of cards in it and I would prefer not to carry my wallet around, but I still need to carry my wallet around if my iPhone doesn't support even just one of those cards.

3. Improve the wallet UI. If I want to use a credit card other than the one chosen as the default in my iPhone, it's annoying to scroll and find it in the UI. I would prefer a grid UI or something faster to move through.

4. Find a way to support Apple Pay at restaurants and other venues (e.g., gas stations in NJ) where a worker traditionally takes your physical credit card and goes elsewhere to process your transaction.

I bet it's higher in European countries that have had chip + pin & contactless longer than the US. I use Apple Pay all the time with my watch, the only time I use card is with petrol pumps as they're not contactless yet. I just wish Apple Pay Cash and the Apple Card would launch in the UK soon!

I use it sometimes when I'm buying something online. It's tied to the credit card I use for almost everything. For in-store purchases, especially now that I wear a mask, I find it marginally easier to pull out my wallet and pull out my credit card.

Article title is misleading, assuming the first part of the article is accurate:

Seven years after Apple Pay launched in September 2014, 93.9 percent of consumers with Apple Pay activated on their iPhone do not use it to pay for in-store purchases . . .

So there could be a bunch of users who don't use it for in-store purchases, but DO use it online.

I use Apple Pay everywhere it is accepted. I don't bother with physical cards except at drive through's and places that don't take it (like Wal Mart).

I used it this morning at the price club to buy a few things. I think having the watch makes Apple pay that much easier. My wife has it, and likes it, but sometimes I have to remind her when they take it as opposed to hauling out a physical card.

Seems low. I use it all the time. I wish I could Apple Pay at the pump.

A lot of places take Apple Pay at the pump. Wawa (a NE/Florida concern) does. Costco does. Exxon is still hung up on their proprietary app. At the pump, it's super convenient and I really like it.

I’ve been using it since the beginning, but still sometimes people are amazed when they see it, including iPhone users…

Not exactly related, but the 6% figure seems like it would apply to everything smart phone related. Everyone wants the newest and fastest phone available, but I’m sure about 6% take advantage of any of the new features.

The rise of contactless physical cards is absolutely an issue. I couldn't convince my mother, who otherwise loves her iPhone, to use Apple Pay, but as soon as she got one of those contactless cards she started using it right away and even went out of her way to tell me about her "cool new tap to pay card".

Some people are just odd. (and I say this about my mom in a loving manner of course!)

That explains why just about every time I try to use it, the cashier seems really confused about what they need to do. A lot of fast food places actually support it, but when I go to hang my wrist about the car window and say Apple Pay, please they just don't know what to do. I tell them to pick up the scanner/reader there and hang it out the window and I tap and they seem really confused. At least in most stores I don't have to prompt them, I can just tap my watch to it, but a lot of times they seem amazed by the technology even though it's freaking 2021 and I've been using it since my first Apple Watch in 2015. Six years! Six percent over six years is not good.

The equipment is out there now. I think when most places get new gear or upgrade any of their payment systems it just comes with support by default. But some companies are ridiculous and go out of their way to disable it like Walmart. Considering how many Americans outside of big cities rely on Walmart for basically everything they buy, along with Amazon which also doesn't support it, it's no wonder the percentage isn't higher. Apple needs to work harder to push for a few more of these large breakthrough places to support it or they're just not going to get the large scale adoption if everyone still has to carry a card around. Habits can be hard to break.

You see, the thing with Apple Pay is that it didn't replace anything, it is just another thing to fiddle with on top of everything else. The iPhone straight up replaced your phone entirely. I think the electronic ID stuff is actually a step towards getting more people to use Apple Pay. Once you can replace the wallet entirely, then more people will be on board, and once more people are on board, and it's super convenient, more places will adopt it as their customers clamor for it.

It depends where I would say.
In Poland 99.99% of shops will allow you to use contactless payments, so apple pay is also supported and I'm barely use cash anymore.
In USA most stores don't use it or enabled it like Walmart - I need to use chip card instead. When I'm going to restaurant - for example Texas Roadhouse I need to use magnetic strip because later I need to sign and tip (it's ridiculous for European guy that somebody took your card from you instead bring terminal to your table!). That's why apple pay will not be popular here in my opinion.

Here in the Netherlands i see almost all the people that have an iPhone pay with Apple Pay. So probably more popular here then in some other countries?
Same here in Germany. When I was in the US two years ago I was a bit disappointed. I expected Apple Pay acceptance to be better than in Europe but I had to find out that many stores still use swipe readers and did not accept Apple Pay. It was much worse than here in Germany.

I still think the article is wrong thought. That number is way to low.

Exxon is still hung up on their proprietary app.
I actually like using Exxon's app because I can get the payment part out of the way before I even open my car door. Then I just get out and pump gas without even interacting with the control panel on the pump other than to select what grade.

US is way behind. Here in the Netherlands since COVID started contactless payments via smartphones have ballooned. I hardly use my debitcard ("betaalpas") or creditcard physically in shops anymore. Specially if you have an Apple Watch it's so easy to pay.

I can … and do! Not only at my local pump (Boston area), but also on a recent trip through upstate NY and western PA. I was surprised to find it at every pump I stopped at 🤷🏻‍♂️
