Seems surprising to me, I use it all the time, but that is just me. I can see how people could forget or still be intimidated by it in the day to day flow. Muscle memory for pulling out the card.
I live in a fairly quiet, quite rural area. What might seem advantages in a bustling city, simply don't appear relevant most of the time.

This data doesn't surprise me one bit. i think I am the only person I know who uses a digital wallet. I have tried to get my wife, she won't. My brother, who works for apple, doesn't, neither of my parents on their android devices, can't think of a single friend who uses it. When I worked with others in an office and would go to lunch, I was the only person i ever saw using it.

....yea but I think things are changing finally. The introduction of "tap to pay" on most physical cards is making the concept a lot more widespread. 2 years ago I could barely use it around Miami, now......I say I'm a good 80% of transactions I can use Apple Pay.

Same. Only places I shop that still don't seem to accept it are kroger stores and Home Depot. I was a bit pissed with Home Depot. They don't accept tap to pay and most times I go in their readers are so loose that they won't read the chip in my card so I am forced to swipe.

Both Home Depot and Lowes!!!!! funny thing is that Home Depot was actually one of the first to accept tap to pay and then they disabled it!

I started successfully using it at local grocery stores after getting my Apple Card.

But yesterday, I tried to use Apple Pay to pay for [overly expensive short term] parking at ABE airport in the Leigh Valley, PA. It was marked right there on the payment machine as a supported payment option.

It failed. Had to use a debit card. A woman came out when I hit the “need assistance” button and told me “yeah it’s broken and hasn’t been fixed yet”. This is a new, just-installed, payment system (as of the last six months), eliminating human cashiers and ability to use cash (fine for me, but maybe not for other poor people), and it’s already semi-broken. 🙄🤷🏽‍♂️

It’s also irritating that they raised the price for an hour’s worth of parking, after eliminating the expense of employees.

“Easier, lower expenses” almost never works out for the end customer.

I might do! But I pretty much never even think about doing so. I can use a contactless card without even fully opening my wallet - mostly.

All the fuel stations round here require card to be put into slot.

Yeah you’ll find any shop that accepts contactless payments in the UK will accept Apple Pay. All supermarkets accept it and to be honest it’s a struggle to find a retailer that doesn’t accept it. I pay with my Apple Watch more often than I pay with my physical card these days and have done for the past 5 years or so.

Seems low. I use it all the time. I wish I could Apple Pay at the pump.
I used to use Apple Pay all the time, and then my credit card converted to a tap/contactless card and I found I actually prefer that. Since then I have stopped using Apple Pay.

It’s probably been mentioned before but America is about 10 years behind Europe and Asia in terms of banking technology. We’ve had tap to pay/contactless for well over a decade and it seems the US were very late to adopt it. I remember chip and pin had been used in Europe for almost 10 years and I was shocked that when I visited the states I was still expected to sign for purchases in so many places.

It's so frustrating because it's no longer required. My scribbly line doesn't mean anything, really. Why am I doing this?

IMO I think a lot of places don't trust the card networks on that. It's the same sort of thinking that makes ZIP code prompts still somewhat a thing at gas pumps, even though the chip negates the need for that.

In sf most of the food trucks were cashless. They passed an ordinance that they had to accept cash because it was classist

Well - I used Apple Pay for the first time today. It worked.

Now I am trying to think what advantage there might be to using it?

I rarely buy anything that exceeds my contactless limit. I can switch to a credit card, if there is a problem. And I usually have a partner with me who would help if I needed it.

Yes - I can see not revealing card number, etc., would be a good idea for online use.

I've mostly given up on using it in person, as my tap to pay VISA card is simply faster/easier
(I'm not a watch user)

Online though, I use Apple Pay anytime it's offered

The advantage for me is the speed of getting through a checkout. Whether it’s manned, or self serve I find just paying with my watch quickly is about as quick and trouble free as it gets. No looking for cards or pulling wallets or phones out of pockets. Plus the contactless limit is now £100 so nearly all my shop purchases are done via Apple Pay. Literally everywhere accepts it now, even down to car parking machines and putting air in car tyres.

Without an Apple Watch there seems less reason - just as difficult getting phone out as wallet!

And it obviously isn't worth getting a watch for just this purpose.

Partner asked what advantages there are - and I really couldn't answer. (She has a suitable phone but has never set it up.)

Essentially most banks now days support some form of “Pay” i.e Apple Pay; and most people by this point have a modern smartphone capable of supporting a digital wallet whether android or iPhone… It comes down to education and the vast majority of smartphone users nowadays are severely lacking any of such. Let alone care imo kinda sad really. Missssssing out! Bummer

I still don't see I (and partner) are really missing out on much.

Does Tap-To-Pay with a card work through your wallet?

Or do you have to use two hands to remove the card from your wallet to tap it?

The nice thing about Apple Pay with an iPhone is it only uses one hand... whereas you'd have to pull out your wallet with one hand and use the other hand to remove the card.

Let me be clear... neither of these scenarios is particularly complicated. There are far more important things to worry about in this world. :p

I was just curious about how Tap-To-Pay cards work. I've never used a card that has it.

My wallet has a flap - that can hold cards. I leave my debit card there. Then I can remove the wallet from my pocket, open it, and flick open the flap in one hand. The card used to work (mostly) without even doing that, but since my credit card got contactless, I am more careful so as to avoid using the wrong one. (Or worse, using both!)

Not my experience. Wallet and cc much more time consuming than phone that is in my hand. 30 secs prior to hgetting to the register I authenticate and then tap the terminal. Done. Plus my cc info is protected. Ymmv.
