So this company declares that the Apple Watch looks too feminine and it was designed by a first-year student, and then they decide to basically make a clone of it.

This validates the design go the Apple Watch. Put my vote in for Apple releasing that watch face.

This makes no sense at all.

This makes as much sense, or more, than the similarly-priced gold Apple watches.

Everyone knocking this must surely think paying $20k for an Apple Watch is also ridiculous (because it is).

At least this will still be functional like the day it was made in 50 years (with servicing). Can you say that about any piece of electronic equipment and especially something that's designed to be made redundant, unsupported and unfixable in as little as 10 years? What happens if or when iOS stops supporting the older watch models? You're basically left with something as functional as this anyway, if you're lucky.

it actually looks nicer in some of the other pictures on Hodinkee...

@ 26:30 he's wearing a watch that looks idenical to Apples watch design but it's in the 1980's. Lets tone down the blatant calls of "ripoff"
Hardly. There have been many rectangular watch designs through the years. There are, in fact, only a few basic shapes a watch CAN be: circle/oval, square/retangle, triangle, polygon, trapezoid, parallelogram, etc. The specific look & feel of this knockoff are what's so egregious.

Um, NO. Perhaps some are in touch with their feminine side a bit more than I.

It was obvious to me the iWatch was girly from the get-go.

Men need manly watches. The Apple watch is FAR from that.

Any man who "needs" a manly watch is, by definition, not a man.

I'm certain that if you'd asked Steve McQueen which watch a man needs to wear, he would have told you "any ****ing watch he wants".

I think the word you're actually looking for is troll.

They are actually having some fun with the Apple watch and Apple's marketing. Check out this video:

OK, their watch is still lame, and I've never been a fan of "me too" advertising, but that ad is pretty funny.

Yes, it's pure coincidence that Swiss watch sales began to fall around the same time that the Apple Watch was released. Pure coincidence, I say.

Where do you get those figures? Completely different markets I would've thought.

Maybe it's having an impact on the super cheap Quartz watches such as Swatch but I doubt it is on mechanical watches.

Sales dropped precipitously starting with the month immediately following the Apple Watch release...I think it would be considered willful ignorance to deny a correlation. Remember that even TAG's CEO stated that even if the Apple Watch sold "only" 2 million watches it would be more than any other watcher maker has ever sold. And reports indicate that they may have sold as many as 15 million.

The Apple Watch is a game changer, whether people want to admit it or not. It's so much of a game changer that makers of fine mechanical watches are now copying its design.

Me and millions of other people don't think it's ugly.
Considering all that the Apple watch contains inside, it looks pretty decent. But for a non-smart watch to emulate Apple watch's thick rounded slab form factor and then slap on a faux distressed band is just Apple-inspired ugly. So again, Apple has made ugly cool.

mmm... A $25,000 mechanical apple clone watch looks just as ugly as the $500 digital Apple watch. LOL

I wonder if they'll manage to sell all 50 that they make.

Costs more than Apple's high end watch.
Doesn't do as much as the Apple Watch.
Not as well known a brand as Apple.
Copies Apple Watch style.

It's like a typical knockoff except they want to charge more for it than one would have to pay for the real deal.
They'll sell them, H. Moser & Cie. are amongst the best when it comes to selling limited quantity watches. Their entire business model is based around making a watch rare.

Also it may not be a well known brand to you but to those that can afford, they're known and loved.

I love that strap!

This doesn't have the same level of nap to the suede leather on the upper band or the green color on the bottom leather (mine's done in a supple, quality leather in brown) as the mechanical clone-like watch, but I absolutely love this band by Dassari that I bought for my Apple Watch a while ago.

As you can tell I have mine on a spring bar adapter but if you used the other adapter type it would look pretty similar and I suspect have a similar feel to it. I liked the band so much (look and feel) that I picked it up in other colors.

Their clone watch and My Apple Watch:

If anyone's interested here's the ebay seller I purchased it from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DASSARI-Her...hash=item25969179db:m:mF3i0EY0p_A1dYa3bAO2SBA Band color is Earth Brown.

BTW I chose the Panerai style band as it comes with tubes inserted in the lug end. You can easily push the tubes out and you have a nice pathway to insert the classic band style of adapter (as shown in this photo, Slate Gray--sort of greenish gray color). The adapter is from Yesoo (ordered from freedomoclock).

Yes, Apple is the ONLY company that ever thought of a rectangular faced watch:

https://www.google.com/search?q=rec...KEwiwtqP1iZbKAhUH8z4KHalBD0gQ_AUIBygC&dpr=0.9

Who is saying that they were? Apple are getting bashed from some for having a rectangular face instead of a round face & then from others it's because they apparently claim to have invented the rectangular face when at no point has either apple, or others defending their choice to go with that shape, claimed so. People, you may not like the Apple Watch or its design or even Apple but please don't be so pathetic with your desperation to put something down that you don't like or own...

This.

As I stated in an earlier post, this will now be the de facto attack against the Apple Watch now that they can't use the "rectangular watches are stupid" angle.

The MacRumors article implies that new Swiss watch took the Apple Watch as a design role model. That's ridiculous - just google the images for "rectangular watch" to see a large number of similar watches (most are extremely ugly, I think). And others are implying that the Apple Watch eats up a significant fraction of Swiss watch sales... I would be surprised if that were so... Swiss watches have a different client spectrum - either on the cheap side (in the area of under 150 €) OR much more expensive, such as H. Moser & Cie.'s latest product. I guess the decline of sales might be more strongly correlated to the strong Swiss franc and the generally increased terrorism Angst and fugitives crisis in Europe. But it would certainly be a worthy subject to gain more insight into...

I would say it looks very very similar in design indeed, we aren't just taking a rectangular face here, it's pretty much the whole look of it which is similar. I have an old watch in my draw which is also rectangular in shape but at no point would I claim it to resemble the Apple Watch, this one clearly does, in my opinion of course...

I'm not convinced many of you even realize what is going on here..
these guys obviously took it to heart that maybe the apple watch was going to kill their industry.

if you watched the video you would realize they ARE copying the apple watch. on purpose.
its a jab at smartwatches in general and anyone who commented about there being no features, clearly missed the joke.

the company is basically fighting back with a bit of cheekiness against apple and their dominance in other areas.

Ha. I was just about to say that hardcore fans should be happy this watch came out.

Now, whenever someone says that the Apple Watch doesn't look like a "real" watch, they can reply with, "In fact, it does look just like at least one mechanical watch!"

:D

Of course, the relationship is a bit timey-wimey. And it's not an exact copy. Crown placement, lugs, etc all a bit different.

I don't necessary think Apple and other smartwatches will kill their traditional watch industry, but clearly they chose to "copy" what they (and other companies in the tech industry as far as other Apple products designs) see as a winner with customers. They didn't pick a loser smartwatch to be "inspired" by after all, that would be foolish I'm sure they thought. They see what is selling. As flattering as it may be, I really find it sad that they are design bankrupt to have to be so closely inspired.
