I switched to the Note 8 but I already used a lot of google things like G Suite, Chromecast, etc etc. I think you should just grab one and see how it is for you. If it doesn't work out return it. The Note 8 is an amazing phone, but if someone is highly invested in the apple ecosystem it might not be worth it. I'm of the mindset that I like both Android and iOS. I'd always had an iPhone and just wanted to try something else...and so far so good. With Side Sync, my iPad, and iMac it seems to be working for me, I get to experience both.

I bought an S8+ on a whim just to have something to play with (mainly GearVR), when a killer deal popped up a few months back.

Dex is a joke (think ChromeBook, only... worse).

VR on the other hand is awesome. If you want a VR setup that's also mobile, it's hard to beat the GearVR paired with a 2017 flagship. Everyone I show is crazy impressed.

Beyond VR, and a really pretty screen, I find it inferior to the iPhone 7 plus I also own in every other way. Even the camera, which is really nice, lacks the optical zoom effect that I really do use a lot.

I wouldn't buy it again, but it's a neat toy for VR.

Since the Note 8 is essentially an S8+ with a .1" bigger screen and an S-Pen, I can safely say I'd feel the same with the Note.
It does have the dual lens set up though that would rival your camera experience

Well, as far as I know I cannot attach three monitors to my iPhone, a mouse and keyboard and run InDesign on it. Probably can't do that on an Android phone either.

Also, as far as I know there's no way to hook my iPhone up to our Windows Server so I can access file shares and open ID documents. Maybe Samsung might have that ability?

Sorry, just ran with this 'desktop' thing and assumed it meant that it would be functioning like my MacPro.

If the Windows server share has WebDAV and/or SMB enabled, you can use a number of iOS apps to access the files as along as you have apps that can view or edit them. I haven’t done this in a couple of years, but used to access some Windows shares over WebDAV. It worked, but was kind of buggy and not totally reliable.

We migrated to Office 365 so now most files are stored in the cloud where pretty much any device can easily access them. iOS and Android can both run enough google and Microsoft Office apps that you can actually get quite a lot done from either platform as long as your files are cloud based. My concern for DeX would be whether or not the apps I would need are available. If it can run all the same apps as android, then it might work. Just like ChromeOS, it all comes down to where your data lives and whether or not the platform has the right apps and/or browser features to provide a good experience.

I've been using iPhone for the past 3 years. After being disappointed with iOS 11 and iPhone X, I decided it was time to go back to android.

I've had my galaxy s8 for a week now and honestly I wished I had gone back to android sooner

Like someone said before, android is an acquired taste. Either you love it or hate it. I happened to love it.

I would recommend buying the note 8 but don't sell your iPhone just yet. Try the note 8 for a month and then make your decision on whether to stick to android or back to iOS.

Right. And for us this isn't going to be a viable option.

Our server does use SMB and after fixing the router so devices could access the server we could use apps as you suggest.

The problem is that I need a ful-fledged computer running InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat (with Pitstop Pro), and Photoshop.

Yes, Adobe has at least PS, but we're a weekly newspaper and I do a lot of ad edits. Subbing a phone for the job of a desktop Mac just isn't going to happen.

My reason for bringing this up is the absurdity of these claims - whether they are Apple or Samsung or anyone else making them.

Yes.... I’m impressed with PS for iOS, but that doesn’t mean I’d want to use it, or even could use it, for some types of edits. Creative Cloud is a great example of use cases where a more robust computer, operating system, and heavy client provide a better experience. Office applications like the ones provided by Microsoft and Google translate better to mobile operating systems and devices. Still, there are times when I’m glad I’ve got the full desktop applications for Windows or Mac. In general I’d rather do heavy editing or content creation on a full Windows or Mac OS. I’m just happy I can take my iPad to a meeting and easily access my files... and even make quick edits if necessary.

In fairness I hadn't thought of that. True point.

I really don't hate my S8+, it's just lots of little things that fall short. It's one of those situations where if you don't need to compromise (iPhone), why compromise in the first place?

Samsung makes a nice piece of tech though, can't really argue "build quality" anymore (especially with the S8/+/Note 8)

In truth not one person can say either device is the best. It simply is the best device for you. You find something not useful that's ok. There a tons of people who will. Everyone jas their own opinion. No one device fits all. Everyone has their own views and needs.

I just got the Note 8 and even though Android is super confusing, this phone is absolutely amazing. I just held my old iPhone 8 Plus and it feels archaic.

Now I just have to learn Samsung/Android lol.

I can understand how the Note 8 would be awesome, but how does it make the 8+ seem archaic? Is it the better display? I guess it would be more fair to compare the Note 8 to the X.

The stylus thing turns me off. Reminds me of my PalmOS days, although I’m sure the Note 8 is way more advanced than my last palm device. I guess I just don’t like using a stylus. I don’t even have the pencil for my iPad Pro.

I seriously considered the S6 a couple years ago. I use mostly Google and Microsoft apps (work in an Office 365 environment), so it would have been an easy transition. I stayed with the iPhone because I wanted an Apple Watch and because my employer bought me an iPad. If I ever go Android I’m going to have to trade in all three devices because it would annoy me to use both platforms. I use a Windows desktop at the office for heavy editing, and a windows desktop at home for photography, but it’s iOS that keeps my work and personal life organized.

That's valid advice. I think if somebody truly wanted to know what the other device was like, try it for 14 days and keep your previous iPhone to see if that's ultimately what you want. But I think android has come along way and we all know Samsungs hardware is very good.

most of the heavy iphone users who switched to samsung that I know go down this path...(including myself)
first few days: wow this screen is awesome! So vivid! The colors really pop out on the screen. How come I didnt make the switch earlier? Android is so fluid and give you so much freedom!!!
after 10 days: umm somehow this app I frequently use on iphone doesn't work as well as on the samsung. Like when I want it to go to landscape mode it doesn't automatically do that. Wait did that app just crash on me? The battery doesn't last as long as the first few days...
after 1 month: somehow my eyes hurt a bit after looking at the screen for a while. The display is really vivid but it puts on more stress on my eyes...the software isn't as optimized as the ones on the iphone. I am ready to go back...
ready to sell the phone: holy crap why did the phone lose so much value!

Yes, this was my experience with an S8. I used it for one month and then I moved back to the iPhone.

ive tried samsung several times and always sell them due to touchwiz. stock android is the only way to go

One the beauties of Android is that you can use 3rd party launchers. Even though touch wiz has improved I still prefer to use a third party launcher.

I was looking into options for VR and I ended up literally doing the exact same thing as you but bought the smaller S8 instead for a killer deal back a few months ago. I got the S8 because the PPI was a little bit higher than the S8+ (570 ppi VS 529 ppi).

I'm on a iPhone 8 and I have the exact same impressions with the S8 as you. GearVR is great. Amazing they could pull that off using a phone. Besides that I have to say I prefer iOS.

TO YOU.

You need to make sure you don't speak for the masses when talking about yourself.
Have the "masses" voted with their wallets? I have only heard of Rick (who is clearly a Samsung fanboy) mention that Dex is so great. I would suggest he consider "for him" as well.

Haha this was my exact experience on my S8. For the first few weeks i was in love and didnt even want to touch my iPhone. Then everything you stated started happening. As far as resale value? Holy crap did it drop, the phone I paid $700 i could only sell for $450 after only 3 months. Never again.

Yeah pretty much minus the screen hurting my eyes. That screen is still really amazing.

But yeah too many things the iPhone does that are lacking on Android that just makes the experience smoother for me especially since I have pushed most of my family to get iOS devices over the years since I didn't want to deal with all the tech support calls I knew I would get if they had Androids ;).

This is coming from a mostly Android user btw, I switched to iOS for the first time with the iPhone 7 Plus.

Oh and even though my Note 8 gets marginally better scores in benchmarks vs my iPhone 7 it still drops FPS in games way more vs the iPhone which is just sad IMO

I’d say try it if you’re this curious. I’ve tried android a few times and have always returned to iPhone. No one can tell you what to do, you need to try it for yourself and make up your own mind.

I had my S9 for 3 months before selling it I could not live with the amount of micro stutters, and frame drops in the UI if I am paying a premium for a flagship phone I expect a buttery smooth UI hence why I am coming back to iOS the second the iPhone X is released.

S9? Are you from the future? ;)

considering making the switch from iPhone to Samsung gal/note. I don't really want to, as I've been a iPhone guy for the last 10 years, but the note has several features I like, that the iPhone does not have (I think). before I make the switch. I wanted to check with some experienced people and make sure the iPhone does not do a couple of the same functions. One feature the galaxy has is the 'Dex' system which appears to allow a seamless use of smartphone as a pc/desktop and i'm thinking about checking out some of the virtual reality components available in which I don't hear much of the iPhone mentioned when the subject is brought up. My question is, does the iPhone support both of these functions and I 'm just not aware of it!

thx

Dex is pretty much useless, trust me. You can't install any desktop app like in windows. You can only run apps that are on your phone, and those apps are designed to use ON A PHONE, not on a desktop.

Desktops have to run x86, desktop running ARM doesn't work. I bouhg the surface with Windows RT (ARM) with that "desktop fantasy" and let me tell you, it is worth pretty much nothing. YOu can't install anything other than the apps in the app store, wich are made for phones, not for desktop.
