God I hate CES. A week of companies announcing pie in the sky stuff that may or may not become consumer products. And this year everyone and their brother will be selling Amazon Echo clones and Apple will be doomed...

You ppl stop posting and go back to work. You've been off the holidays for at least two weeks now, sheesh.

Ahead of CES 2017, Synaptics today announced a new multi-factor biometric engine for use in smartphones, tablets, and notebook PCs. The new platform, made in partnership with facial recognition company KeyLemon, incorporates both fingerprint and facial recognition, allowing a mobile device to be unlocked in multiple ways depending on what's most convenient for the user.

The system also provides additional security for financial transactions and the unlocking of other sensitive information, as two modes of authentication can be required.

The multi-factor fusion engine features anti-spoof technology, using AI to distinguish between fake and actual fingers. The facial recognition feature in the platform also checks for eye blinking and head movement to prevent spoofing. While Synaptics is focusing on finger and facial recognition at the moment, Synaptics VP of marketing Anthony Gioeli says future iterations will include "additional biometric and security factors."

Synaptics also recently introduced fingerprint sensors capable of scanning a fingerprint through glass, allowing for button-free display designs able to take advantage of fingerprint recognition functionality.

Apple is working on a similar technology for the iPhone 8, but while Synaptics is an Apple supplier, Apple likely has its own proprietary solution in the works.

Ugh! Is there no end to this?! Bad enough when psychopaths would just take your eye and cut off a finger to fool security systems, but now they're going to take your entire face! Pass.

. . . .

Too bad Apple's version will be rushed to market only half working with strong claims about innovation and statements like "fantastic" or "revolutionary".

Apples own solution includes recognition of very long faces.

After what they have released and done lately true Apple fans all look like that.

Probably will also require the wearing of a face mask dongle for $ 20.00

And for those with evil twins?
Maybe as an additional security measure instead of a secret passcode you can opt to do a secret series of faces.

Nothing prevents Apple from taking part in CES. They could use the opportunity to showcase their latest inventions. Tim Cook's constant bragging about a magical pipeline of inventions (without providing any details) does not really cut it anymore.

I am excited for the S8 and the iPhone 8/8 Plus. However, I feel like 2018 might be the expanded iPhone biometrics.

Then they'll have to pretty much straight up copy the soft buttons from Android. I still think they'll attempt to avoid it if possible. Or this may just be for the most expensive variant, who knows.

How would the soft buttons be presented. Can you tell I'm a developer. Every time Apple has higjacked a gesture for their purposes (e.g. Swipe down for notification) it kills the uses of many existing apps that use the gesture (scrolling games use swipe down to move around a playing field, or twitter uses scroll down to reload). If they do add yet another highjscking gesture, it will take away the intuitive feel of many apps. Now you're force to make sure you swipe down from the middle or bottom of the screen.... not intuitive.

That said, I appreciate the points you're making. Brain storming.

Can anyone really trust US based companies with such sensitive data with a fascist government about to take control--a government hell bent on back doors, spying and torture. I wouldn't trust these companies with this data. Period.

Don't fingerprint scanners already scan through glass? Like the one on the iPhone? Was it meant to say through a display?

Anyway, I think have dual biometric security measures would be awesome for a phone and damn near impossible to fool if implemented properly.

The truly cool stuff (I don't know if Synaptics has the tech) uses the scattering of ultrasonic waves in the screen for a variety of purposes. One of these purposes is fingerprint recognition (anywhere on the screen) but more generally you can use this for all your touch-sensing, including 3D touch. You can even route the ultrasonic waves though the case and so provide virtual buttons on the side or back of the device!

The company of interest is http://www.sentons.com
Let's see if Apple buys them soon :)
Seriously, they do, for example, provide a way to get 3D touch into the iPad. I'm guessing we haven't seen it there so far is because the strain gauge solution used by iPhones is too expensive and/or can't stretch to the size of an iPad Pro screen and/or makes the screen too thick.

Synaptic's biometric engine must be light years ahead of everyone else to scan fingerprints while wearing gloves.

This is exciting, perhaps the technology will allow the user to choose one or both of the unlocking security features? so if you had gloves on you could use the facial recognition feature instead.

I… what? Why? What problem is fixed by removing the Home button?
You mean the outdated home button? The same home button that results in giant, ugly top and bottom bezels that make the iPhone much larger than it needs to be all in the name of symmetry? Should Apple have kept the iPod scroll wheel, too? Progress my friend, progress.

How do you propose the get back to the home screen when your in an app that uses every possible jesture, which means Apple can't highjack a unique jesture to get back to the home screen. Something is outdated if there is a viable way duplicating it's functionality without killing the use of existing apps.

Don't let that stop Apple, have u used the news app?
Unbelievably frustrating & one that isn't fixed yet, try going a few articles in to different articles & tell me how to get back out easily without tapping back & back & back... or killing the app altogether & starting again!

Upset because other companies are pushing the cutting edge while Apple adds new watchband colors?

You don't understand what "fascist" means, do you?
