I doubt Samsung will go face ID only. They have a tendency to go for 3 solutions instead of one. Look at the S8: charging - USB-C and wireless (s7 also); headphones - wireless and wired jack; unlock - fingerprint, face, and retina scan. I guess they want to give people options.

I have to say Samsung makes some amazing hardware. Don't you wish Apple would squeeze in all that choice into an iPhone?

Even though Face ID fares better for most of the users, it still doesn't work for twins or siblings who look very similar (which is about 1% of the population).

Really? Windows Hello, using Intel's Real Sense cameras handles twins. The error rate with twin images is 1 in 10,000. I would assume Apple's error is similar.

Good and bad. I think iPhone users tend to want one way to do something for simplicity. Android users expect more than one way, and deal with the complexity.

You think Apple would remove a feature and then bring it back?

Better hold on to your headphones.
I could have swore that apple tried to do this but could not get it for the release. I don't double we'll hear, "and we've heard your voice so we are bringing touchid back" despite only taking it off the list because they could not get it working as planned.

Actually, i first thought no way. Then upon further thought, I could see them introduce it for lower priced models and leave Face ID for the expensive models.

I would guess that there is already enough data to justify another attempt at the belt and suspenders approach to Auth on iPhone.

Except it's hard to think of a case where the current iteration of Apple has admitted - even indirectly - it was wrong. Instead they seem to obstinately double down on decisions, like not offering a "legacy" USB-A port in addition to the USB-C ports on their supposed "pro" laptops.

If Apple was lying to us about not investing in fingerprint tech and we find it in next year's iPhone X successor, I will be sorely disappointed in Apple...

I would say the true disappointment is fans being happy with Apple taking away the users choice in the first place. All I see now is post like Face ID vs Touch ID, which is stupid, because there is no answer. People are subjective. Some are never going to be happy with Face ID and some are never going to be happy with Touch ID. Both are good technology's and Apple users should be pissed off that they can't have both to choose from.

Face ID+Touch ID+Iphone X2 > Face ID+Iphone X

I don't know why Apple giving you more security options in the end would make you sorely disappointed in Apple. Having less options sucks for all of us.

I would be overjoyed, in this situation, if Apple was lying.

I'd love to know how many people here complaining about the problems with FaceID (and how in-display TouchID would be better) actually own the iPhone X.

My guess is none.

Well, your guess would be wrong. Not that it really matters. If its a feature people dont want, then they arent going to go out and buy that phone. In my case, I knew face id would not work as well for me, in certain situations before the phone ever came out. I could have turned out to be wrong? So what. Its a comment section, not a professional product review site. Meanwhile, what I thought would be issues, turned out to be issues. ( Having phone in mount in car was one ) Others have also crept up. Touch id I can program different finger prints.......like my wifes, for emergency. Face id, no such option. So this would be great, for me. If they want to keep both, fine. I just really liked touch id, and would prefer to use that.

Apple won't go back to this form of biometrics (even if under the screen) within the next few years. Because courage. Kidding. Kinda. But the iPhone will eventually have multiple forms of biometric input. But the use case will determine that. And right now, Face ID (+ passcode) is better than Touch ID (+ passcode) in most cases. So no need to have two methods that do the same thing (though with varying pros/cons).

Even though Face ID fares better for most of the users, it still doesn't work for twins or siblings who look very similar (which is about 1% of the population) and children under the age of 14 (which is a lot). So I believe Apple will have to incorporate Touch ID under display at some stage, probably not too far in the future, to compensate for this.

What part of FaceID "doesn't work" for twins or similar-looking siblings? How does the phone know whether you have a twin or other sibling?

I follow a fair number of tech journalists on various media, many of whom are Apple fans and own the iPhone X. A number who were initially gaga over FaceID at first have become more tepid as its limitations become clear.

But your milage may vary.

All in all, people like options.

If the iPhone X and X Plus were to get under display fingerprint readers then Apple would see more folks willing to give out the $1,299+ to get one.

I doubt the next iPhone will have this tech.

I own iPhone X and honestly Face ID works perfectly.it’s extremely fast and works more reliably than Touch ID for me.

With Touch ID I remember many instances that it would fail (iPhone 7 Plus,7,6s,6,SE) but that NEVER happened with Face ID.

Only issue is when phone is flat on a surface like a table and you want quick unlock to check something..and you have to pick it up in front of you..that’s really annoying..

That and the thought of your face diagram/map/whatever it’s called, being stolen somehow by a third party App..that bugs me..

So yeah it might be worth considering finger print sensor under display.

With all this talk about under-the-display fingerprint sensors, I wonder if it'd still work with a cracked display.

Since upcoming phones will most likely have edge-to-edge displays, a cracked display might just render the fingerprint module useless.

Well in that case, you could switch to Face ID, since that choice would still be there on future new Iphone. Plus you analogy could go both ways, because a cracked display could render Face ID useless if the cracks are spread around the Face ID's sensors instead of the Touch ID one.
