I wonder if this would be more useful on an iPad.
If Apple were to put FaceID on the iPad, they have to consider the fact that the iPad is a uni-rotational device, and people expect it to work on portrait, landscape, and even upside-down. FaceID might have a problem unless Apple perfected the tech further to adapt to device rotation. Meanwhile, TouchID doesn't have this issue as much, and this thing will work great if Apple decide to push the bezels away on the next iPad.

Excellent point that's often overlooked. Only in the unrealistic scenario of the entire display containing an under-screen scanner would it make any sense, and even that's mostly just a solution in search of a problem given Face ID is more secure and works so well.
This is just not true. If you grab your iPhone X in a normal position with the thumb you can train yourself to put it in the right spot.

This already happens on the 8 and below so why wouldn’t it happen virtually on a decent hit box for iPhone XI?

I’ve seen this argument twice in this thread and it is rediculous. The X forces you to tap tiny and far apart spaces to navigate both apps and the web.

A lower middle Touch ID would be trivial to land compared to Face ID in some circumstances.

Did not Apple follow Samsung with facial recognition? Yes, Face ID better but Apple is still a follower here. So far I have not seen any rumors about Samsung adding Face ID-like features.

Apple followed Samsung with faceID in the same way Apple followed the laptops with fingerprint sensors that showed up in the late 2000s that you had to swipe your finger across. The technology is fundamentally different since Apple’s system is a depth sensing technology, not an image based one. While it may appear to work similarly to the consumer, the reliability and security levels achieved are completely different.

I would see a clear advantage for multiple options. I don't own the X, so my opinion on Face ID is ignorant. But, I've thought about the many times I've fluidly unlocked my 7 while taking it out of my pocket and how intensely I'd miss that.

I think I'd be so much more on board if Apple were to implement a similar scenario to "rest to wake".

For the X it would be like the following: Wake > Look > Homescreen.

As an option, I think it would be nice to skip the notification screen. Just a full on hands free unlocking experience. No swiping. I stress... option. :)

I felt the same way before I got an X. And after a day, I realized Face ID was much faster and convenient than Touch ID. There is nothing easier than 'looking at your phone.' You especially notice it when you are opening Face ID apps (like banking or work email apps). It literally opens up instantly.

Even Apple Pay is much better.

I think the argument of Face vs Touch is a bit of a waste of time. Apple has clearly said "iPhone X is the future". Yet, they still sell a bunch of phones - seven at last count - that offer Touch ID. Why is that?

Pondering that question, I believe there is a final version of the fat bezel phone coming in parallel to iPhone X development, and that phone will end up with the behind-screen TouchID sensor. At some point, "the future" will become "the present", and Apple will converge the two phones. Both unlock methods will be available in a single chassis then.

I'm willing to bet that Apple did indeed have this roadmap when the iPhone X was in concept, and therefore were not lying when they said "TouchID was never going to be in the iPhone X", because they were actually planning for TouchID to be in the iPhone 9, or whatever the final fat bezel phone ends up being called.

As far as I'm concerned, it makes no difference to me. I still use a PIN to secure my phone, and it'll stay that way when I get an iPhone X.

Don’t see the point. If you have to look for and place your finger in a specific spot, by then your phone would already be unlocked with Face ID. Without some sort of indentation to feel for, you’d have to pay attention each time.

You have to pay attention just like Face ID.

Don't worry it won't happen.
Next year Samsung will have it.
Then in 3-4 years Apple will "invent" it.

Just like how Samsung suddenly “invented” a swiping fingerprint sensors in the s5 after the 5s was announced?

By the way, Samsung never claimed to have invented it, and neither have Apple with technology they were late to market. Of course tech companies will say they “developed” a technology and market the hell out of a (old) new feature, but it’s generally the fanboys that claim the rival tech company is falsely claiming an invention.

September 2018, Tim Cook pacing up and down the stage:

Done with iPhone until there's touchId

I’m sure the people who said they were done with Macs until Apple brings back the super drive are still rocking their new PCs with a CD drive from a few years ago since most PC OEMs followed suit with ditching the feature. Good for them for sticking to their word, I guess.

It won't happen. Apple doesn't go backwards. They've made a bold statement about the future and it doesn't include Touch ID. Once you use Face ID, you'll never want to use Touch ID ever again. It really is incredible and magical and perfect.

Because the iPhone is their flagship product and the iPhone X is their flagship iPhone. Apple wants the latest feature on their highest end device, and will roll it out to other devices when older generations retire. I can’t believe how many people are still in denial mode and counting in Touch ID coming back. Apple made FaceID for unlocking, yes, but they’ve also opened it up for other things that use facial data, opening up features they were previously impossible without it. I doubt Apple will throw all that away.

This is clearly the future. I for one will not be switching to a Face ID device. Tried it, didn’t like it, way less convenient than Touch ID.

Even though Face ID fares better for most of the users, it still doesn't work for twins or siblings who look very similar (which is about 1% of the population) and children under the age of 14 (which is a lot). So I believe Apple will have to incorporate Touch ID under display at some stage, probably not too far in the future, to compensate for this.
Because they didn’t know this prior to investing in FaceID?

Not so clear to me.

I'd love to know how many people here complaining about the problems with FaceID (and how in-display TouchID would be better) actually own the iPhone X.

My guess is none.
You are entitled to your freedom to guess, however wrong it can be...
I have the iPhone X, and I am complaining about how the FaceID works. It does not read my face when it is on the desk and my face is not directly above it.
It also would not unlock when the phone is rotated 90 degrees.

Why would anyone who has never used a feature (FaceID) have such a strong negative opinion about it?

Reminds me of my kids who refuse to eat something they’ve never tried before....just because.

It reminds me of the huge negative backlash when TouchID was introduced years ago. Many here were just itching for Apple to stumble and fail, allowing them to feel better about themselves.

I think a lot of people are missing the obvious, this sensor can only be in ONE place if you look at all of the images. That is anti what apple wants to do. If you are going to have a "designated area" for your fingerprint, why not have it be a button?

Someone also points out what happens if you crack the glass? Since its "reading the fingerprint based off the oled pixel reflection" as soon as your display is shattered, their goes your fingerprint reader.

I would love to see this in practice. No doubt Samsung will either make its really really ****** face/iris protection better to battle Apple or include this and say "well now we have 4 ways to authenticate and only recommend one (fingerprint reader) cause the other are "convenient" and not secure.

Next year will be interesting for sure in phone tech no matter what company.

If this works well, bye bye iPhone, I'm going android.

Is there an echo in here?
