That picture looks like the sensor is under a small part of the screen. I wonder if the displayed image directly above the sensor would look different compared to the rest of the screen. For example, very faint ghosting or color change.

I wondered that too. I am guessing it would display something. Ghosting or and icon or something. I doubt they would want to do it full screen since it would be easier to accidently use it.

Plus you analogy could go both ways, because a cracked display could render Face ID useless if the cracks are spread around the Face ID's sensors instead of the Touch ID one.

I haven't seen a real-life iPhone X, so I don't know if the display glass goes over the notched area with the sensors or if they're physically separate (i.e., the glass has a notch when taken off the phone). Nonetheless, I'd expect that the area where the Face ID sensors are would be more resilient to cracking due to the rigidity of the sensor module as compared to the OLED display film?

I'd love to know how many people here complaining about the problems with FaceID (and how in-display TouchID would be better) actually own the iPhone X.

My guess is none.

Agree. What I love about FaceId is when it works before I even realized I needed to authenticate. A touch sensor has to interrupt you to get you to place your finger. This seamlessness is not appreciated by people who do not live with an X.

I would like to see FaceId to get a little faster, support two faces and increase the functional angle.

I never want to go back to TouchID. The FaceID is awesome. I think I adapted in to it in the first minute I had my X. It now seems primitive when I have to unlock my iPad and MacBook Pro.
Agreed. Got the X and I was worried about adjusting to no home button. No problem. Only issue I hope they resolve is FaceID in landscape mode. Kept my 6 plus and now barely even touch it and when I do it just feels weird.

Good question. The sensor is _behind_ the OLED display, so it should be invisible under illuminated pixels. Dunno about black images under strong ambient light. Probably not visible if the sensor is set to the same color as the rest of the display backing.

"The company says that its new fingerprint sensor is able to work faster and in more situations than a 3D facial recognition systems: its fingerprint sensor is able to read a user's fingerprint in 0.7s versus 1.4s for a facial recognition camera.

"The Clear ID In-Display fingerprint sensor is said to have approximately 99% spoof rejection rate due to the AI-powered PurePrint technology that discerns real fingerprints from fakes.

If Apple was lying to us about not investing in fingerprint tech and we find it in next year's iPhone X successor, I will be sorely disappointed in Apple...
Apple and also Steve lied all the time.
Steve: Nobody reeds Books anymore.
Next year: Apple introduces iPad and iBooks shop.

So whatever they say may not be the truth. Anyway who blames them? Would you buy an iPhone X with them saying: “you know we couldn’t get touch id inside the screen right yet, so we side tracked to Face ID”

I’m guessing that under the screen sensor takes up too much under display real estate. They reorganized the whole phone for this faceID implementation. Apple isn’t one to historically give options solely for the benefit of user choice. They nixed the headphone jack for more internal space...

I hope they still have Touch ID in their lineup, but I am not holding my breath that they will have both in one phone anytime soon.

I'd love to have both TouchID and FaceID.
In most of my use cases FaceID works better than TouchID, but sometimes it just sucks in comparison.
Whenever I try to unlock my iPhone X while it is lying on a table, it fails more than half the time, and I have to pick it up. It just won't work from an angle. Annoying. TouchID on my old phone worked perfectly in these cases, and I didn't even have the improved version of it.

FaceID is conceptually far better than touchID. Looking forward to next iteration and hopefully elimination of the notch (meaning sensors do not need to infringe on display area).

Even though Face ID fares better for most of the users, it still doesn't work for twins or siblings who look very similar (which is about 1% of the population) and children under the age of 14 (which is a lot). So I believe Apple will have to incorporate Touch ID under display at some stage, probably not too far in the future, to compensate for this.

What do you mean "it doesn't work for twins"?

Of course it works! The only downside is that there is one other person that is able to unlock your phone. Everyone else can't.
So unless your twin sibling is a siamese one and following you around with every footstep, or unless maybe your twin is an evil one and out to destroy your life, you're just as safe as anyone else.

I own iPhone X and honestly Face ID works perfectly.it’s extremely fast and works more reliably than Touch ID for me.

With Touch ID I remember many instances that it would fail (iPhone 7 Plus,7,6s,6,SE) but that NEVER happened with Face ID.

Only issue is when phone is flat on a surface like a table and you want quick unlock to check something..and you have to pick it up in front of you..that’s really annoying..

That and the thought of your face diagram/map/whatever it’s called, being stolen somehow by a third party App..that bugs me..

So yeah it might be worth considering finger print sensor under display.

No, it doesn't work perfectly. Angles, distance, and partly covered face are all issues with Face ID.

The confusion here seems to be reliability in use case. Face ID is great for normal standing or sitting use of the phone.

Touch ID is far better for when the decice is set down flat or generally out of the hand. It is also better when the face is obscured or you are laying prone.

So this is not about face id’s general reliability in its best use cases. It is about Touch ID being available to back up Face ID in poor use cases for Face ID which exist just as non conductive gloved hands on Touch ID.

Nobody wants this.

Face ID has killed the need for this technology. Apple has created the perfect replacement and it is flawless.
Oh hi, it's me Nobody.

My issue is I don't want to pay extra for this 'feature'. I am currently ok with how my phone unlocks. It should come at the same price point as iPhone 8.
So what you're thinking is the next phone will cost what the current phone costs plus the cost of this sensor? Or are you thinking that if Apple saves $20 on the production of a phone that they will pass the savings on to you? Either way BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Don’t see the point. If you have to look for and place your finger in a specific spot, by then your phone would already be unlocked with Face ID. Without some sort of indentation to feel for, you’d have to pay attention each time.

Excellent point that's often overlooked. Only in the unrealistic scenario of the entire display containing an under-screen scanner would it make any sense, and even that's mostly just a solution in search of a problem given Face ID is more secure and works so well.

I would see a clear advantage for multiple options. I don't own the X, so my opinion on Face ID is ignorant. But, I've thought about the many times I've fluidly unlocked my 7 while taking it out of my pocket and how intensely I'd miss that.

I think I'd be so much more on board if Apple were to implement a similar scenario to "rest to wake".

For the X it would be like the following: Wake > Look > Homescreen.

As an option, I think it would be nice to skip the notification screen. Just a full on hands free unlocking experience. No swiping. I stress... option. :)

I mean, probably not? Why would anyone that dislikes FaceID spend $1k+ to have it on their phone?

Great point, it was in fact one of the reasons I didn't get this iteration of the iPhone despite upgrading yearly for the past 4 phones.
