I would not be surprised if this ends up being part of a closeout of low-end iPads from Apple. With iOS 4.2 coming to the iPad, a new iPad with a camera and FaceTime cannot be far away.

If nothing else, Apple is going to want to get rid of stock that still has iOS 3 installed.

Dude the Ipad 2 is not coming out till April 2011...but we will get the announcement in late January or February...Apple releases new product updates once every year...that is how you build up demand and lines a mile long...the other manufacturers do not get this yet...You don't release a new phone\slate every 3 months!!!!

$399 bro...and the Ipad is using current stuff...except for the RAM vs the Iphone 4...the Itouch is basically just like the Ipad...but overall the Ipad is faster than the Iphone 4 and the new Itouch....

This is the way to buy the current Ipad...do not get the highend models...go $399 and don't look back...sell it when the Ipad 2 comes out...you will get at least $300 for a 16 GB ipad in 6 to 8 months...

Ebay is your friend....

True, I was holding for V.2 but for $400 is not a bad deal. Like you said when V.2 comes out you could still get $300 for v.1 16gig.

GEEZ.....Can you keep something quiet for a change so some people can get one on the sneak before the HUGE TJ Maxx rush. Geez already.

Really...front page.....let some loyal macrumors people get to a store first. Hahaha

Haha!

These Ipads will be gone in 5 mins of the opening of the TJMaxx store...

This is legal? Doesn't this squash any form of competition? It seems like Apple (and companies I won't mention here) have a vice-like grip on pricing and retailers are bullied into selling at those prices. I don't see this with LCD TV's for example...... Don't want to start an argument about this, it's same here and with other more esoteric goods. No competition, all those retailers just decided to sell at the same price, pure coincidence of course.

I know that, at least in my business (again, the golf course/golf equipment industry), it's been upheld as legal. I don't know if you're a golfer, but it's why you will ALWAYS see Callaway, Titleist, PING, etc (the major manufacturers) equipment listed for the exact same price (well, within a few dollars of each other). And, many manufacturers strictly enforce it. In fact, my PING account was pulled because PING sent in one of their "secret shoppers" to try and get me to come off the price of a club. I told him I couldn't, so he started getting louder and louder and more irate until I caved and gave him a FIVE DOLLAR discount. I gave it to him just to get him out of my clubhouse so he would stop making a scene. The next day, I received a fax from the company showing me the receipt and saying that I was in violation of the MAP agreement, and our purchasing account was terminated and I could no longer be listed as a PING retailer. I don't know if it's the same in consumer electronics, but in the golf business, it's perfectly legal to make retailers agree not to sell below a certain price.

How long you think the wait will be?

How much is your time and comfort worth?

I'd rather just find a side job to do for $100 bucks instead of waiting in the cold for several hours for the CHANCE to save $100....

At a certain point there is a threshold where you spending your time waiting is a net negative....many peoples time is worth MUCH more than you could save in these deals.

On the flipside, If I was homeless this would maybe be a way to make some quick cash holding a place in line.

Because 5 people are gana be a lot? Do you really think that many people will go there to buy an iPad? The only people that know are people like us which would already have an iPad or have no intrest.

Hmm...seems kinda sketchy. Since when does Apple allow such a big discount? Worth investigating, but I'll bet it's either a mistake or else they have like three iPads they will sell at this price and that's that.

If TJ Maxx paid apple whatever the price is for buying them wholesale, whatever that price is, TJ Maxx can sell them for whatever price they want.. Apple made there money, TJ Maxx would be the one's loosing out on the cash.. Maybe it's just a ploy to get people into the store...

New ones in Feb...

Front and Rear Cameras, Landscape Dock Connector....

Now's the time to sell out the old ones - great price!

Just bought the NetBook special at the MS Store though ($199 normally $399).

The catch usually is…

*While stocks last.

Is there laws in the US on how small their stock is allowed to be to advertise the deal ?

Nope. As long as they state those magic word or exact # available they are in the clear. Bait and switch laws only kick in if the adv. doesn't specify stock or "limited to stock," or advertises and never has stock (unless it's for reason beyond store's control, i.e., the delivery truck blew up).

Why sell at a loss?

Because, let's face it, who is going to go to TJ Maxx for an iPad @ full price or even slight discount. They aren't looking to make $ on the iPad just get people in the store.

Called a Tucson, Arizona store and they said no Arizona stores would be receiving.

Another interesting tidbit, a Scottsdale store said that "TJ Maxx does not have Black Friday deals."

Yes, but not to knock TJ Maxx worker bees, but they are not the first to get news. Would take anything they say at face value.

New ones in spring, yes, but these are not "closeouts." Apple runs a very tight inventory system to avoid making more than 4 weeks demand at any given time. Likely TJ Maxx bought these from there dist. @ full wholesale and taking the hit. The word of mouth is cheaper that running ads.

Just want to confirm this great deal. I got mine at the Warwick, RI location. $399 and it's brand new in retail packaging. It's NOT a refurb as some have said. Makes you wonder why Apple can't at least offer them for $399 if TJX can.....

Three possible reasons

I could think of 3 possible reasons why it's being sold at that price:

1) It's a Clearance, possibly meaning that the 16GB WiFi model doesn't sell as much as the other models and Apple wants to get rid of any overstock.

2) It's a Closeout, possibly meaning that Apple is clearing stock quickly for an iPad update.

3) It's Refurbished. (Please ignore this, as another forum member confirm it's not refurbished)

Only time will tell...

I think you underestimate the speed of information.

Why wouldn't someone inclined to deal with Black Friday messes, go to exactly the place where what they want is being sold for the cheapest?

True, I was holding for V.2 but for $400 is not a bad deal. Like you said when V.2 comes out you could still get $300 for v.1 16gig.

I bought the first one when the 64GB 3G came out for $829. I got 300 apps on it and I am only using about 12 gigs of space! iOS 4.2.1 is about a week away! By the time Black Friday rolls around, it will be out.

Go 16 GB wifi for $399 and sell it in 6 months and get the Ipad 2.

We all know the Ipad 2 will start at 32GB and go to 128GB and have dual cameras for facetime and maybe even a dualcore A5 chip and much more memory! But that is in April 2011. Why wait to feel and tough the magical Ipad! Get one on Black Friday from TJ Maxx for $399.

Prices for the Ipad 2 will probably be the same or a $100 cheaper than the current Ipad. You will want it and you will trade up, just like the Iphone 3GS to Iphone 4 and Iphone 5. It's a cycle and we all love it. At least apple products hold some of their value.

In closing, lets hope apple surprises us and releases iMovie for the Ipad when iOS 4.2.1 is out.

Congrats on the P/U. Apple can't sell them for $400 because it's a core product. This is a one-off for TJ Maxx to get people in the store and they take the hit on the gamble it will draw far more people than units who will buy other stuff on impulse.

Bro...April 2011 man...but it will be announced in feb...

not again, first they came to walmart, now they are in tj maxx
i feel so sorry for those "decent" "elegant" fanboys:mad::mad::mad:

Here in San Diego people are calling like crazy the few stores they have the lady told me over the phone.
Crazy. Yeah $399 is a good deal.

Here's my hunch - based on having worked at the Apple Store for nearly 5 years (I quit about a year ago) - Apple always has a sale on Black Friday. They are likely going to have a similar discount on Black Friday and are allowing authorized resellers to offer it as well - and those retailers are pushing the envelope in offering it during all their Black Friday days, not just on the day after Thanksgiving... either a loophole (my guess) or Apple gave them that latitude specifically (I highly doubt this).

Authorized Apple Resellers never offer a discount of more than $5 or they will violate their agreement with Apple. The only way this is kosher is if this is what Apple is offering on Black Friday (with perhaps a $1 difference).

Yep, the challenge now is finding one at TJ Maxx. :D
Even if you end up "losing" $150 after 6 months of use still worth it.
