Welcome to marketing. It's a common trick to put two things adjacent and let the reader's mind connect them. Happens all the time in marketing and politics.

Totally doesn't make it okay. Misleading is misleading, doesn't matter if it's "herpderp marketing!"

I see your point. They should have handled it better. And using the term 'no strings attached' and '0% financing' was deceptive.

Where I come from, any time you finance something, you're going to get screwed. The only good debt has the words "paid off" written on it. The fact that the $20 INCLUDES the subsidy for the iPad surprises me. In a good way. I expected you to have to pay the iPad off with a separate monthly payment.

You can't calculate the cost of the iPad that way. It's not $1110 for the iPad over two years. You're getting the value of the data service in there, too. However, it's still an absurd amount of money. For both the iPad, and the data on it.

They really are giving away 200MB of data, if you do it right. They're relying on the fact that you'll use more than that and have to pay. Using more than 200MB over LTE, in my area, can happen in around 57 seconds.

Smart people will buy a used iPad, or a refurb, and stick a T-Mobile SIM in it. Boom, 200MB free data, debt free. You're welcome.

Dumb people will finance it, feel betrayed, and wonder why they're broke at the end of the day. As they've always done. Death by a thousand cuts.

HA! I'll let you know... I only feel broke at the end of the week! :p

AT&T Next program is aimed towards stupid people that don't know math/calculate their bills.
It's a pure rip-off.

You know the account is metered / billed per month, Right? The end of your billing period would be Dec 2, then. At which point you'd get another free 200Mb until the end of that billing period. This goes on in perpetuity with each billing period being between 28-31 days.

Of course they didn't... it never states anywhere you have to be intelligent to qualify to purchase an iPad. :p

Totally doesn't make it okay. Misleading is misleading, doesn't matter if it's "herpderp marketing!"

Naivety is naivety... if something seems too good to be try, it probably is. It's the buyer's responsibility to know what they're getting into.

Shop at Apple

I think the moral of this story from wading through all these comments is that you get a much better experience shopping at the Apple Store, not going to the T-Mobile store.
Haven't seen anyone getting hit with bu****it $10 SIM charges on top of buying the iPad at Apple.

No one said "free financing, no strings attached" so I don't think the definition is in question.

The press release did, and so did the CEO via his tweeter.

I quote," EVERYONE get 200mb free data monthly, no string attach, no exception." " everone get 20mb gree data monthly and %0 financing"

no exception means no exception. To say financing and 200mb are two different things in the aftermath is not really a good PR strategy IMO.

Free means no cost and no payment.

When you promised FREE data then one can expect FREE and truely FREE, but not some data plan in order to get FREE data.

If it was T-mobile's intend to do 200mb and 0% financing separatedly, then t-mobile should have included an "EXCEPTION", which should read," everyone get free 200mb except new financing customer.

I received my ATT iPad air today and went straight to a T-mobile store in NJ. I own my device (no financing). Staff was very helpful, understood that I want to try out the network and gave me a prepaid data SIM to get 200 MB data for life. The total cost was $10 -SIM was free, they charged me $10 for activation (reasonable)

I didn't even bother activating my ATT account. I believe once I do, I have to recharge every 2-3 months else my SIM gets fried (May be wrong, but that's what I heard)

Overall positive experience, no complaints. I have ATT for my phone and may actually think about moving to t-mobile depending on the network

There is no charge to activate a prepaid account... they charged you 10 bucks for the SIM despite what they say. I purchased one of the 99 cent Tmobile SIMS about a month back to put in my iPhone when I jump to Tmobile (they're free now BTW) and created my account and had my 200mb data up and running in under 30 min... I'd say more along the lines of 10 min. tops... didn't pay a dime more than the $1.08 for the SIM plus tax.

Ultimately, yes, but that doesn't excuse a company's marketing being completely misleading.

but you're still wrong

new financing customers still do get 200mb free too, on top of whatever their plan gives them

if you pay $20 for 500mb and receive 700mb, you've gotten 200mb free. $30 for 2.5gb+200mb. $40 for 4.5gb+200mb

get it out of your head: financing has nothing to do with the 200mb. if you want interest free financing, you must be a paying customer. thats it. end of story. don't even bring up the 200mb in regards to financing.

I still can't see the problem. There are two statements.

Everyone gets 200Mb free data. They do. There are plenty of people who have activated this on T-Mo for free over the weekend.
Everyone can get 0% financing. They can. They don't have to but they can if they want. Just because there's not a finance charge, it doesn't mean there aren't other conditions that you have to meet to use that service.

People using the financing plan aren't excluded from the 200Mb free data. They get that too as well as what ever they're paying for. There's no exception because they're not excluded.

It could be a good PR strategy or not (there's certainly plenty of people talking about it here and elsewhere). That wasn't the point of the MacRumors article. The article asserts that the free data is misleading but everyone does get free data.

Ugh.

This 'article' is terrible reporting. It's conflating free data with free financing.

Walk into an Apple store, hand them your credit card, walk out with an iPad and enjoy your free 200MB data.

If you want FREE FINANCING you have to be a paying T-Mobile customer. If you're not a T-Mobile customer, fine, just use your credit card or whatever.

new T-Mobile customers who wish to take advantage of the carrier's 0-percent financing offer on the iPad will be required to sign up for a $20/month 500MB data plan in order to get an additional 200MB of monthly data "free".

I don't know what to say, this sentence is just wrong.

It is not FREE, if you have to pay to get something that is "FREE", it is not FREE.

When you put a cost on something, the term FREE no longer exist.

IT IS NOT FREE. Damnit, i feel like i am talking to a wall

I will give you my one millione dollar super car Audi R8 for free, but you have to buy my Bel Air $13 million dollar house.

Is the car free? no, it COST you 13 million to get the car

Secondly, if financing and the free data are to be two separate thing, then the press release should have read, " 200mb or %0 financing", and not " 200mb and %0 financing."

I don't know what to say, this sentence is just wrong.

FREE financing is not FREE because you need a data plan, therefore FREE is not FREE anymore.

T-mobile should stop using the term FREE.

ONLY existing customer can finance freely and get free 200mb.

Only people who brought their own device get free 200mb.

NEW financing customers do not.<----this is clearly an exception that contradicts CEO's tweet and t-mobile's press release.

Tmobile is the Poster Child of being a lying sack

It royally frosts my keester when these companies try to use a play on words to rip consumers off. Do they really think we are that stupid?
I saw right through their lie when I went to the Tmobile site to sign up for the so-called "free" 200mb of data. Hmm... a $10 monthly charge is added.... yep, they are lying sacks of excrement.
Now, back at AT&T, at least they are upfront about their data plan charges for the iPad..... $14.99/month for 250mb or $10 per month on a family share plan.

I don't know about the rest of you, but i'll go with the company who is more truthful any day, even if it costs more. Tmobile reminds me of Bill Clinton in the Monica Lewinski scandal... "It depends on what the meaning of "is" is".....
Yeah, and Tmobile's 200mb data plan "is" free.....

Probably true. It is 6 months for a verizon ipad sim. If 6 months go by, it's dead and you have to go get a new one.

All this really proves is that you don't know how to activate data directly from the iPad. You don't sign up for it on the carrier's website unless you're on a post-paid plan. If you have a T-Mobile SIM in your iPad you can go into settings and add the 200MB data plan, free of charge.
