So a question then:

I am switching from Sprint to T-mobile. My contract is up on October 7th. Can I order the 5S (64G) from T-mobile and wait until the 8th to activate the new phone?

The ETF from Sprint is $100 (I am trying to avoid paying by waiting until the 8th.). Also, I am running up against a deadline of getting my old iPhone to Gazelle by the 15th of October (which I guess can be solved by trading it in with T-mobile).

I would say do the trade @ TMobile to keep it easy unless you looking to get more for your phone.

You can order from The 5S from Tmobile and get a new phone number. You'll have to activate the phone and service. Then once your Sprint contract is up you can have your number ported over to replace the Tmobile line that you activated and it will also cancel your Sprint account automatically.

Could you buy a Tmobile phone from Apple at full price and not activate it? There is no financing through Tmobile so I would think this is possible. I am in the exact same situation except that I'd like to buy the Tmobile iPhone 5S at the apple store to trade in my 4S and use some gift cards I have.

If I purchase the 5S through Apple with the Tmobile SIM option (vs no SIM), can I just pull the SIM out and use any other as long as the phone isn't activated with the TMobile sim? Why would I do this? Riding out an ATT contract for a few months and then switching.

Yes. It's unlocked.

No. I intended to put down $400 (trade-in value of my current iPhone plus money set aside for this purchase.... though I don't think I will be able to do that..... I'm not sure T-mobile will allow me to put down more than 299.00... ) through this EIP (Equipment Installment Plan). I just was sure if I could order in on the 20th and hold it until Oct 8th. I don't have enough saved to buy it outright.

If you buy full price from Apple you will purchase it unlocked and you can use any GSM SIM.

This is what I'm planning to do for my parents 5S. Buy unlock at Apple, then go to T-Mobile to activate it with the nano-sim card.

If you purchase a T-Mobile iPhone, they make you call a number to get the phone unlocked. Not sure how reliable and how long it will take for them to approve it. I'd rather be safe.

Except with a contract, you can't just pay off the phone and buy another at a lower upfront cost.

Actually, I'm pretty sure with t-mobile, you don't even need to pay off the phone first to buy another at a lower upfront cost, you can simply just add another payment plan and have two payment plans/two phones on one line.

It's my understanding that you can't. You can only have one EIP per line.

Nope doesn't work like that. One payment each line, at least that's what I was told.

You're making it too complicated.

Go buy the new phone on T-Mobile, but don't port your number yet. Use it on the new number. Set Sprint phone to forward calls to TMO phone. Put in the number port request the morning of the 8th. When it goes through, wipe the Sprint phone and send it to Gazelle.

You *might* need to go to TMO store to do the number port as you likely will need a new SIM.

Shouldn't need a new sim to do a port.

You're allowed to put down more than Tmobile's upfront payment price. They will just adjust your monthly payments on the phone to reflect the higher down payment you made on the device. So your monthly payments would be lower.

Do you have any proof to back this claim up? Because a T Mobile representative told me that you can have 2 payment plans with 1 line, it just gets added on. Other wise, why else would they allow the process to go through on their website.

Yeah, I'm not sure about this.

I had an EIP for the Nexus 4 (stupid, I know--I didn't feel like waiting for Google). When the iPhone 5 came out, I got another EIP to use on the same line. Sold the N4 and paid off the original EIP a few weeks later.

They never asked me anything about what line I was going to use it for when I bought it in-store. I also called a few weeks ago to inquire about how many EIPs I was eligible for at one time and I was told five--I currently have 4 lines with 3 active EIPs.

You can have more than one EIP per line. I've done it for several customers. The max credit balance you can use per line is $650 I believe, so let's say you owe $300 on a phone. That means you still have $350 available for financing a new phone. It would just increase your down payment on the second device.

Contact Sprint and ask them if you cancel service now (less than a month out from your end date) would you incur an ETF, and hopefully you will get the same answer I did. I am also switching from Sprint to T-Mobile with a contract end date of 10/06/2013. When I contacted Sprint regarding what sort of ETF I would have to pay if I cancelled my contract before that date, I was told that if I waited until after 09/06/2013 there would be no ETF. I received this info via chat so I have the transcript for proof, and I do plan on verifying this one more time (via chat, so I have the transcript for proof) before activating my T-Mobile service.

I did let the agent know how unhappy I am with Sprint's service, not sure if that helped or not. :D

Good luck!

Does your down payment decrease as your tenure goes on w/ T-Mobile? I got me and my wife a 5 back in June and had to give up $330 for each phone as a down payment. I just signed up for the Jump program yesterday.
