PSA: For The Athletic subscription, it looks like you'll need to create/use an email address that you have not used to previously subscribe. I used both an email that is tied to my current subscription (but cancels in October) and an email that I previously used to subscribe but it's no longer active. In both cases, it was I was not eligible for the promotion.

Not sure if this is the case across the board, but I wanted to share my experience.
