The key here is "family of four". I can't see that $70 a month for a single phone is going to be a big draw for a one-off phone user.

Definitely. And for me (who uses 3-4GB/month), along with my wife and mother-in-law (who use virtually no data) on a combined plan, it isn't a compelling deal. However, when my kids are a little older and get phones, it'll probably be the best thing going.

For instance, right now on Verizon I'm paying for 4 lines with 16GB for $150 per month. It also comes with carryover data and this month I have 32GB of data.

Curious how you're getting that. 4 lines is $80 ($20/line). 16gb plan is $80. So that's $160 before taxes/fees, which would likely tack on another 10-15%.

Still not bad compared to T-Mobile, but as a Verizon user currently, I'm curious! :)

Edit: Nevermind, I see now. First I'm wrong about 16gb being $80. But I'm guessing you have the 8gb plan for $70 and got 2gb/line bonus, getting you up to 16gb. $70+$80 is $150. But there's still another $20 (give or take) in taxes/fees. Still better than T-Mobile's 4 plans though...

Right now I have 3 GB of data per month, which includes tethering, which I use often. I don't run out of data, and I get full-speed everything. Not only that, but I pay $50/month. I get the appeal of "unlimited", but I'd rather just pay for what I'm getting. Unlimited in this case means I'm paying more than what I need.

welp, been with verizon since 2006. 10 years. But my bill for two lines is now over $170 per month. that's with a discount. and i don't get any texts. my old unlimited data plan just got bumped up by $20 per month. time to switch. might do it this weekend. i use about 8-10gb per month and i don't think there is any way verizon can offer me anything like this.

I switched my wife over from Verizon onto my T-mo plan in mid December but I guess I missed the boat on the $150 gift card promotion. My bill sits at $196 with two lines and to EIP plans for iPhones 7+. I think there's about $6 of taxes so I it'll go down by that amount if they absorb the taxes into the price of plan. No complaint here.

It's the "L" plan, $70 for 8GB + 2GB per line bonus data at $20 per line. 4 lines at $150 and about $15 for taxes/fees.

You need to switch plans on Verizon, especially if you're getting a corporate discount. With two lines and a 20% corporate discount, you can get 12gb of data (and possibly 2gb/line extra) for $104. Tack on the taxes/fees and it's only about $120/month.

If you did the 8gb plan and were able to get 2gb/line bonus (giving you 12gb/month), that would be $96 plus taxes/fees. So around $110 to $115.

I'm assuming none of the numbers you mentioned included monthly cost for a device.

What The Fee!?

That made my day. I wonder if I can keep the 4th free line promo while taking advantage of this tax/fee-free deal... I doubt it but one can hope it'll stick.

Because water, electricity and gas are finite resources?
So is wireless data. If too many people are connected to a tower using their "unlimited" data plan, the network becomes unusable. Ever go to a stadium and try to use your smartphone? Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Network congestion, while not directly comparable to water, is finite in its own way.

I'm paying $120 a month for one iPhone with 3 measly GB with AT&T so yeah I'd say that's a pretty huge draw. I'd switch but they have terrible coverage where I'm moving in Colorado.

Yes it should! I pay for water by the gallon. I pay for electricity by the kilowatt hour. I pay for gas by the gallon. Why should internet, which is like any other utility, be any different? Why not pay per unit used?

Paying per unit incentivizes users and service providers to be efficient. I will try to connect to WiFi whenever possible, and apps like Spotify can compete on data usage (i.e., imagine Spotify advertising same sound quality as Apple Music but uses 25% less data)

Paying for "unlimited" incentivizes waste from both customers and service providers. Why bother compressing the images - customer won't care.

So then you also want your home internet connection to be limited to data caps? I doubt it? You want to pay Netflix for each show you watch, and then also your ISP for more data for each show you watch? I doubt it.

In other words, you don't want to pay for everything like you pay for your water. Obviously.

The devil is in the details.

I had ATT from 2000 to 2015. Got sick and tired of them constantly changing plans , rules for data, redefining "rollover" and I never knew what I was paying for. Switched to T-Mobile and could not be happier. Less money. but more importantly, it is consistent.

First? Yes, they're "forcing you to buy an unlimited plan" now - but it sounds like they're also saying you're going to receive a $10 per month bill credit for each month you don't use more than 2GB of it. So there's that ....
In other words, it's a $60 a month 2 gb plan, with a $10 overage fee. And I wish they'd stop using the term "unlimited" and instead use "throttled". With no HD video and a cap of 28 gb (which isn't as much as I'm getting with AT&T for the same price), it's not truly "unlimited". After 28 gb (which admittedly is plenty for most people), it's more like "unusable".

ATT and Verizon have been deceptive.

The "Data Plans" have never had a linear pricing system. If you could pay-as-you-go and know easily how much you had been spending then it would be easy . The analogy for water purchase would be to pre-pay 10 gallons a water a month. Then if it gets hot and you need a few extra showers, and you exceed your water allotment, the next few gallons cost you 5x as much.

In France I'm on a network called "Free".

19,99€ ($21) / month
50 GB data (in France, Europe, US, Canada, South Africa, Israel, Australia, NZ - roaming fair use 35 days per country per year)
Unlimited calls, SMS, MMS (in the same countries)

Good to know. I'll certainly call them and see what they can do. Last time I checked they were unable to lower my bill by much. I assume these plans you're speaking of include unlimited texting? I think 12gb would definitely be enough. I don't think my wife's line is eligible for any discount. It's only my primary line that gets any discount. And no, we got both our iphones effectively for free back when you could still sign up under a two year contract.

Unlimited texting and calls. Data is the only thing limited, but it sounds like you don't use enough for that to be an issue.

And the way the corporate discounts work now is they apply it to the data cost. So if it's still eligible, whatever percentage your discount is would apply to the $70 or $80 amount (depending on which data plan you chose) and then the two lines are $20/each on top of that.

The only thing I'm unsure about is the 2gb of bonus data per line. I have a feeling that requires a new device agreement or new port in, and you might not be able to get that just by switching plans. But even without that, you would still be better off.

There is a different understanding for me at least between "deprioritizarion" and "unusable" at the 28GB mark. Just saying.

I'm with Verizon and have several promos with them (uber driver 15% off discount, 2gb bonus data for 3 lines, $650 trade in credit promo, and now I got a 128 GB 7 plus for $20 a month on a Christmas promo) and I'm happy. I don't need unlimited 480p videos. I don't like that you have to pay extra if you want to watch an HD video or tether at a decent speed. It's good for some people but there is a catch.

What? Where does everybody get the strange idea that data capacity is infinite? There are basic physical limits to wireless capacity.

Plug in a USB stick to your computer. How many times can you copy and read from the drive?

There you go; data transfer. Infinite (well, as long as the computer is on).

I did the two lines free, so I have 4 lines with unlimited data/talk/text for like $110. Thanks T-Mo!

I'm on the 2 for $100 unlimited with 14GB hotspot per line, took part in the 2 lines free promo and also have my 15% military discount.

There's nothing tmobile can come up with that can force me to change my plan :)
