I'm confused. I thought that the AT&T iPhone 5 would not work on Tmobile's LTE. Apple even said so by stating that a software update could not enable it and that the Tmobile iphone 5 will replace all current Gsm models.
Can anyone knowledgeable comment on this?
Thanks.
Any idea if this will work with t-mo's prepaid partners? I'm on solavei (www.solavei.com/jeffwalker - had to plug that. ha!), and I would love to get this update since my service runs on t-mo's towers.
The Next Web is saying it unlocks AWS HSPA+ for current unlocked iPhone 5's. I thought this wasn't possible and that was why Apple had to release an updated version of the phone?
Also, they say it requires the latest version of iOS and the phone cannot be JB. Hmmm...

This is a Carrier Update that is obtained via iTunes, not OTA.

I just checked, it says this now: AWS HSPA+ (T-Mobile and new 2013 AT&T iPhone 5 only)
So it seems that AT&T will be selling a new iPhone model that has AWS HSPA+ enabled on the wireless chip.
If I have this correctly the current AT&T iPhone 5 doesn't support T-Mobiles 42.2mbs HSPA+. The new updated models will. The current ones do support LTE though. It just had to be turned on.
The writers weren't being very clear as they are mentioning the AT&T iPhone 5 available after April 12th (The "new" 2013 iPhone - not the one released in October) - IE the exact same one being released for T-Mobile (the phones are identical and both have AWS 3G). AT&T will be selling their iPhone 5's with AWS 3G from now on.
The AT&T iPhones bought before April 12th will not have AWS 3G enabled.
See the AT&T iPhone 5 spec info. It clearly lists HSPA+ 42.

Ok this is what I thought was going on. C'mon Next Web! I still don't know if it requires the latest version of iOS. Does it say in the update?

Generally these are actually over the air for the most part, but not related to (Apple's) software update. Often these just update the carrier version that can be checked (and sometimes would initiate/complete the update) by going to Settings > General > About. This is a Carrier Update that is obtained via iTunes, not OTA.

T-Mobile doesn't do HSPA+42 on 1900Mhz. So until the new phone arrives April 12th that supports AWS HSPA+, it isn't possible on T-mobile.
