Like the 6 before it, it'll benefit massively from the new form factor bounce (well ok, "new" isn't quite accurate but still).

If you have a bunch of Qi-Chargers, I would think you would have a handful of USB-C power Bricks as well. Most Qi-Chargers I have bought either come with or require one (if you want fast charging).

I have a bunch of Qi chargers that I got when we picked up an S7. All the Samsung ones have micro USB, or they did.

Why do people feel the need to upgrade?
I’m with a XR and will happily sit this one out, will only consider once Apple offers a TouchID+ FaceID combo alternative or better refresh rate on their phone.
Plus it’s the pandemic so save the money for rainy days.

Camera is the main reason these days, but I guess it's a big jump in video quality too.

Then with the Pro models, there's the chance to play with LIDAR 3D scanning stuff potentially? I'm curious about that.

It's a hobby for a lot of people. If you spend a lot of time daily using an iPhone, yah, who wouldn't want the latest?

Some people have pride that they are frugal. They take pride in saving money and making astute choices about where they spend. I can respect that

Why is it inevitable? I reckon they will keep TouchID exclusively on the SE models while keeping the FaceID for the premium models. Therefore, there will still be more of a reason to get the SE model. Not saying that that Apple won't do it, just unlikely imo.

Yah - as much as I liked TouchID, I do not really want it on my phone anymore actually. Security is more important, and I think FaceID is supposed to be more secure than TouchID. Not 100% sure - I just get the feeling that TouchID is not as good for security.

Correct, And to confirm that notion that Face ID is more secure over Touch ID based off Phil Schillers quote below:

The chance that a random person could use their fingerprint to unlock your iPhone is about 1 in 50,000,” Schiller said. “What are the similar statistics for Face ID? One in a million. The chance that a random person in the population could look at your iPhone X and unlock it with their face is about one in a million.”

Between the pandemic and the fact that it is a fairly lackluster upgrade for most average consumers (not the ones in this forum, before someone comes listing the upgraded specs that make negligible difference in real world use) with a recent model, I really doubt it.

5G might be a good push in the markets where it’s available but other than that I doubt.

I'm sorry but I honestly don't understand people that answer with replies like this. Like who are you to tell the average person whether its lackluster or not. How do you know what phone the average consumer is upgrading from? There are a lot of people still hanging onto their older models iPhone 6 etc. and now that those older models are no longer eligible for new OS per Apple they're looking for a new phone. Even pple with iPhone X are on the upgrading cycle since most people tend to hang onto their handsets for 3+ years ish so just on the new features alone this is a refreshing upgrade. Also, yes we;re still in pandemic but Apple also took that into consideration with lower prices, have you seen what Samsung is offering for flagships? I'd rather you not tell people why they shouldn't upgrade because you don't know what each person's use case is...

The mini is going to sell like nothing before. Absolutely amazing what Apple managed to do in that small form factor, basically it's a super computer that fits in your pocket, smaller than any recent iPhone. Just incredible.

Not when your government is giving you free money and you have to spend it by the end of the year. (context, Taiwan).

I doubt it, maybe its just me but I remember people were more excited about the iPhone 11 last year.
Normal people don't follow the news... they just buy a new one when the old one breaks. And they get whatever phone the carrier sales person encourages them to buy.

If a carrier believes iPhone sales are going to be high, that probably means they plan to push iPhone sales especially hard during this generation.

Hence I said "lackluster for people with recent models"..........reading is key

I believe this is the iPhone X and XS people that will be upgrading, so that it highly likely.
My iPhone X is still doing just fine. Will continue to sit it out until 2023. By then, 5G should be mature and wide spread and the A11 Bionic will likely start feeling slow. Right now, if you put a X beside 12 Pro running iOS 14, you couldn’t tell the difference.

What I see as the game changer in the 12 is a combination of bringing cinematography to the masses. I see a lot more amateurs making short films and uploading to YouTube. Of course more organizations will be using iPhones to film their contents.

For me as an average user, it’s just not a must have. If one of my siblings begs me for one, I might buy it for them because I know they are using old phones.

Most people in the U.S. and Europe are underestimating 5G availability.

Pandemic, yes there is one.

But that is offset by the many countries in Asia which have mature 5G deployments, including the country with the largest population. With over 100 million subscribers in China already on 5G, the iPhone 12 is coming at the right time.

I thought China isn't a huge iPhone market? That they prefer their local brand?

I know Japan is iPhone crazy and South Korea is on the rise..

It depends how you value things.

Best in Class OLED.
Qualcomm Modem ( For me that is one of the biggest reason )
5G if you intend to keep your phone for more than 2 years. ( Which most of us do, median Smartphone upgrade are now 3 years, and trending towards 4 )

And your inside nerd should be very excited for Ceramic Shield......

The Camera and new design are just bonus in my opinion. But some people absolutely love the boxy design and cant wait to get it. I love it too, but I can wait a gen for design though. So I value that slightly lower on the list.

I mean, you are essentially getting an iPhone that is better than last year's iPhone 11 Pro ( $999 ) and only cost $799 this year.

The only annoying thing is that Apple now has a Pro at $999, for extra $120 ( on the 128GB Model ) you get 6GB RAM, and better Camera. The 6GB RAM alone is very tempting. I would not even hesitate if $999 they had the same sensor shift as Pro Max.

Was interested to upgrade my 11 Pro Max to the 6.1” pro before the event. The more I compare the spec between the two, the less excuses for me to upgrade. Guess this will be my first year not upgrading since 3GS. I really hoped Apple have put in the Touch ID home button from the iPad Air.

2023? That's pretty wishful thinking.
Why wishful thinking? My karaoke is still using his iPhone 5s from 2013 even though I bug him to upgrade. Thats 8 years ago and using old A7 SoC. So, why would it be wishful thinking to still using an iPhone X in 2023? As much as Apple keeps making the A series faster, posting on Macrumors, Facebook and Twitter will not see any actual difference. Yes, I will want to eventually upgrade to have something nicer and faster, but the need to upgrade to the latest and greatest has peeked for me.

That graphic makes me miss the Plus iPhones for how awesome (and iPad-like) Apple made the experience of using the phone in landscape mode. It was quite utilitarian. Some of that lives on in the XR/11 and Max models (and hopefully in all iPhone 12 models that are not mini), but not all of it, sadly.

I feel a case could be made that in times of economic uncertainty, some people will gravitate towards brands they feel offer better value for the money. Yea, an iPhone is not cheap, but you are looking at 5 years of guaranteed software support. It also holds its resale value well, so if they want to upgrade a few years later, they can still get some money from it, which helps offset the higher prices.

The iPhone is not some luxury good like a Gucci bag. Everyone needs a smartphone these days, and so it’s hardly surprising that Apple continues to do well even in times like this.
