Plus we are still in a global pandemic, and these are still expensive phones.
Well the "global pandemic" certainly helped Amazon, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung, Walmart, Target and virtually every grocery store instantly become insanely rich. Lots of people actually made more money either being laid off or sent to work from home.

Well apart from a cheap 10 I picked up to tide me over until the 12pro max is released this is my first iPhone since the 6+. Primary reasons the camera specs, the new (iPhone 5) design and a desire to return to iOS after being in the android universe since the 6 coupled with, for me, the affordability of it this year due to hardly any eating out and having to cancel 2 vacations and all the money saved as a result. Plus I prefer big phones, the 10 is just tiny lol.

I think this is a bigger upgrade over last year's phone. What was new last year? A new lens, Night Mode? that was about it. Nothing else changed apart from the expected. This year is def a bigger upgrade, but I still feel like it's not quite the phone it should be... but isn't that always the case with the iPhone? If they can reduce or get rid of the notch, add touch ID, add promotion and improve all the regulars like camera and processor then we're looking at some serious kit.

I've basically been waiting since the iPhone X for an iPhone SE (org) sized full screen phone, and the iPhone 12 mini is basically that. Whether or not I'll actually get it, or wait for the inevitable version with both touchID and faceID, ... I don't know yet.
In the same position, got the X 2.5 years ago, and now no need for such a large screen. Ill be getting the 12 mini- and only because after a few falls, some of my current handset don't work properly, the front facing camera and therefore faceID no longer work.

Why do people feel the need to upgrade?
I’m with a XR and will happily sit this one out, will only consider once Apple offers a TouchID+ FaceID combo alternative or better refresh rate on their phone.
Plus it’s the pandemic so save the money for rainy days.

I upgrade every 2 years. Buy the phone outright, look after it, keep the box, sell it as new and retain about 50% of the new cost. If helps with paying for the new phone. I'd like touchID though, ApplePay with facemasks is slower than just pulling the olde card out.

The “global pandemic” isn’t even a factor when it comes to iPhone sales. Did we forget that Apple had record breaking sales and months of backed up queues of people waiting for the iPhone 4 back in 2010 during the peak of the Great Recession? Most people are still working and still making money. Even the ones living check to check still have no problem spending their excess cash on electronics.

Really, really miss the landscape mode. :(

I prefer my XS Max mounted on my motorcycle handlebars horizontally and it's quite frustrating when a horizontal app exits to a portrait home screen.

Do I understand correctly that even the top 12 Pro Max still has no landscape mode? Why can't they build Face ID like in iPad Pro (that works in both orientations)?

A lot like to upgrade when their contracts are up every two years and a lot I’m sure like to upgrade every year as well. Different markets i guess.

Most people in the U.S. and Europe are underestimating 5G availability.

Pandemic, yes there is one.

But that is offset by the many countries in Asia which have mature 5G deployments, including the country with the largest population. With over 100 million subscribers in China already on 5G, the iPhone 12 is coming at the right time.
Especially in China they will be shocked when they find out 5G does not work on either SIM in dual SIM mode.

Why wishful thinking? My karaoke is still using his iPhone 5s from 2013 even though I bug him to upgrade. Thats 8 years ago and using old A7 SoC. So, why would it be wishful thinking to still using an iPhone X in 2023? As much as Apple keeps making the A series faster, posting on Macrumors, Facebook and Twitter will not see any actual difference. Yes, I will want to eventually upgrade to have something nicer and faster, but the need to upgrade to the latest and greatest has peeked for me.

Just that my X is at 81% battery and I doubt it will be useful as a phone for three more years. It has nothing to do with Speed and performance. If you plan to use your X as a phone for that long it’s not going to reliably stay on all day.

Depends on my usage, yours might be different from mine. But again, I know someone who still uses a 8 year old iPhone and doesn’t complain and I don’t complain about my X either. After a full days work, I have ample amount of battery life remaining. Then again, I don’t live on my phone.

Hence I said "lackluster for people with recent models"..........reading is key

I agree, my bad for not seeing that right away. I think this will always be the case for any brand or model because there's never that huge of a difference between a 1 yr old handset and the new one.

Yeah. I think gone are the day where improvements between generations we huge. 6->6S for example was huge and despite looking the same, usability and performance was on another level. 7/8 to X was also a very big update and changed how we interact with our phones.
This time however, seems they are basing more the upgrade in technical specs (good luck trying to explain to my parents what Dolby Vision is, how telephoto aperture improves the photo, or why they need to shoot 4K with HDR).
We, as enthusiasts, understand and welcome that, even if not game changer if you have recent model. But for non-tech savy people there is not a compelling killed feature to make them upgrade other than 5G (because everyone wants faster data)

Wait - is landscape mode a thing on the iPhone as depicted in the article’s photo? Have I been missing something awesome?

I believe this is the iPhone X and XS people that will be upgrading, so that it highly likely.
I have an XS and don't feel like upgrading. I do like the new form factor, and I believe/hope it will still be around next year.
In addition, while I do have the disposable income, corona will still be around for the next 6 months.
I don't care about battery life, 5g connectivity or a better camera as long as I don't travel and work from home, aka corona is still around. By the time the average Joe is vaccinated, it will be June next year, and then it's 3-4 months until the next iPhone :)

On the other hand, give me a new iPad Pro, Apple TV and headphones. :)

Why oh why is there no landscape mode anymore? The Max models and the XR have screen that are big enough. I loved that feature on my Plus.

i beg to differ. yes, these will still sell like crack but iphone 6 was a complete redesign and that’s why so many people bought one.
Yes, the 6 was a complete redesign, because they went from squared-off edges to rounded edges and introduced a new additional form factor that some people really wanted. Now with the 12 they’ve gone from rounded edges to squared-off edges and introduced a new additional form factor that some people really wanted. How is that not just as big of a redesign?
