You can't expect all retail employees to be excited about their 14.00 per your job at all times throughout the day. Can you imagine how many times a day they are asked that same question? They probably hate the iPad

$14 an hour for retail slaves? Maybe NYC? That's senior management pay everywhere else.

Some Apple employees are extremely ignorant!
It's just because some of them are ordinary people who don't keep up with new technologies.
Here is an example:
My co-worker had to replace her iPhone 4s 3 months ago. She asked me some advice and I suggested she back up everything in iCloud in order to download her stuff on the replacement. I helped her out, she left for an Apple store. 2 hours later she was back with the replacment and furious due to her experience at the store. Despite my words about how she would be able to return her info on the phone, she was angry, because an Apple genius told her otherwise and that all her photos, videos, etc. were gone once and for all. When she tried to argue with him about what I had told her, he just shrugged his shoulders and said it was impossible and he's sorry.
Needless to say, I set it up again and 5 mins later her new iPhone 4S was downloading her backup from iCloud. She was happy like a baby with a candy:)

I work in NYC as a real estate agent.
Probably you know that in order to rent an apartment you have to provide some proof of income. Most of the time we deal with W2s and pay stubs. We've had some Apple folks.
Their annual income is far from being impressive!
They show around 30k annually. For instance, I'm talking about the folks from the NYC stores. So I'm not sure they get $14 per hour. Even if they do, they have very short days/weeks then.
So keep that in mind! It's a myth that they make tons of money. Definitely not the floor managers!

Here is what I was thinking reading your story.

Scott Evil: Well my friend Sweet Jay took me to that video arcade in town, right, and they don't speak English there, so Jay got into a fight and he's all, "Hey quit hasslin' me cuz' I don't speak French" or whatever! And then the guy said something in Paris talk, and I'm like, "Just back off!" And they're all, "Get out!" And we're like, "Make me!" It was cool.

:)

I can kind of see it from both sides:

The "employee who is over-stressed, and probably sick of answering questions about the opening time for launch day questions" point-of-view:

He's probably thinking, "Dammit, didn't this guy notice the huge freakin' sign on the doors to the store, answering his question regarding the opening time?", and "My manager wants to eliminate the leftover iPad 2 stock we have, maybe I can get this guy, who came here today, instead of calling, to buy one of the iPad 2s, and make my sales quota for the day".

From the "customer who is paying a premium for a premium product and premium service":

He's probably thinking, "Wow this Apple tool is being a real d-bag. I'm going to probably drop close to $800 on a new iPad and accessories on Friday, and I get a snide answer for simply asking when they're going to open, so I can position myself accordingly in line early enough to make sure I have a good chance of getting exactly what I want. Maybe I'll just say eff these guys, and take my chances at Best Buy instead".

I hate the title of this thread, I was looking for something outrageous, risque and mind blowing...........

Yeah, I came into the thread half-hoping the Apple employee said that Apple was going to release it early, offer some sort of free accessory for early adopters, or something along those lines.

Wow, I don't know where you're from but that's damn good pay for retail. People would kill for that kind of money for a retail job in my area.... the pay rate here is around half that for a comparable job.

God forbid we think of retail employees as humans...

I worked retail electronics when I was in college. It wasn't horrible, but there were some days and some customers that made me wish I didn't work there. I'm somewhat technologically savvy, (I now work as a System Admin in the IT field), so as a result, most customers asked for me specifically, and I had quite a few repeat customers. As bad as some days and people I dealt with were, I always proceeded with a professional attitude, and treated people with the level of service that I would expect, if I were the customer.

That said, I was raised in a generation prior to these "millenials", that for some reason, come across as it being a tragedy that they are stuck working in retail because they either didn't better themselves and screwed around instead of caring about their futures, or they are in the mindset that retail is somehow beneath them, but are stuck there until they finish whatever degree they are pursuing.

I love threads like this.

OP, who really gives a crap? So you happened across an apple employee doing his job trying to make a sale who obviously hasn't been walking around with a week-long stiffy about the iPad 3... Big damn deal, go tell the internets about it....

He just did. It was interesting enough to get you to read it, and reply to it.

And what's wrong about having an iPad stiffy? It IS pretty friggin' hot...

It DOES look like the iPad 2... I mean, unless the screen was on you'd never tell the front of an iPad 2 from the new iPad.

If I were still in sales, (and especially if I were making $14/hr for a retail sales job), I'm pretty sure I'd be up-to-date on the details about the thing I was selling, and providing me with a paycheck.

Here's what Alec Baldwin has to say about the subject of sales.

The guys are not paid much and have to serve the public which can be terrible on a crush day like friday. Witness some of the off beat individuals here and times that by 10X and I'm sure it's not a day any employee is looking forward to....How'd you like to be working at the store when they finally run out?
