with all the leaks happening so fast, does this mean we will see a WWDC release instead of Sept/Oct?

Like it or not, fragmentation of the displays has begun.

Only for a relatively limited amount of time. Android will always be fragmented unless they tell the manufacturers to make one or two screen sizes.

The iPhones and iPods with the new screen size will become the majority very quickly. Devices will become "obsolete" before fragmentation becomes a big issue.

That's my theory anyway lol

Hmm I'm still not sure if I'll like that they kept the width, if it is what's coming out. Either way I'll still upgrade, I'm due for one. The benefit of keeping the width is being able to use it with one hand, I suppose.

I want a larger screen but not sure if I wanted it like this..

I'll wait for a final release before I decide if I actually like it or not.

Not really sure how it's cramped if the horizonal resolution and real estate is identical. It's the existing screen, plus some.

True, but some would argue that with the keyboard visible in landscape there is little room left for whatever field is focused.

Which seems strange after Tim Cook specifically mentioned "One Phone, one resolution" the other day...

If you look in the past (specifically Steve's interviews with Walt), they say a lot of things and even reject statements and it soon turns out they do the opposite of what they said. (I think Tim mentioned Steve was like that in the interview too.)

this is what i think will happen. june is going to be a fantastic month in technology with all the huge events happening.

Is there much benefit to only changing the screen size in one dimension?

Yes. It keeps the dpi the same, but gives you more screen space.

Older apps could run exactly the same, just shifted up or down on the screen, or floating in the middle with black bars.

What's the circle next to the FaceTime camera?

I'm guessing the circle on the top IS the FaceTime camera. The slit is the earpiece.

The circle at the bottom would probably be the home button.

I'm hoping the extra space is just for keyboard or commonly used apps (like the dock in Mac OS X). If not, as others have said, it's going to be a pain redoing the guy for the apps.

Apple previously refused to put in true LTE 4G chips because it would force a larger form factor. At this point, they may not have a choice but to compromise and release this bastardly phone, just to get the 4G in it.

I'll be skipping this generation if that's the case. When future chips are smaller, expect apple to put out a smaller phone again.

Jeez Apple is it that hard to remove a home button? Just place it on top next to the sleep/wake button if you that desperately need it, but please don't make the whole device longer just so you can have that button on the bodem.

But that's already the case, so the situation can't get any worse. I imagine all the on-screen elements will be the exact same size that they are on the IP4, we'll simply have some more real estate on either side (in landscape).

Still not as bad as Android. Plus I am confident that Apple pulls it off successfully and will implement a beautiful way to tackle this, and the APIs Apple provides have been the best tool to help alleviate much of pressure when a new device comes along (remember the iPhone to iPad conversion? It was relatively easy given the feedback of many devs)

Here's my idea (so don't take it seriously) is that they could leave the apps that haven't been optimized as-is, running at 960x480, aligned to the bottom of the screen (for easier finger controls). And of course those that have been optimized take advantage of the extra screen real estate. So it's basically a mixture of the iPhone-Retina iPhone and iPhone-iPad transitions and no apps should break in this way.

Changing the aspect ratio AND limiting the size increase to just 4" are both ridiculous. They simultaneously piss off developers AND people who want larger screen size more comparable to the market. And fragment their market more. Nice job on this. If they wanted to change the aspect ratio, at least give us a 4.3" screen to give us some additional width.

No matter. I'm going SGS3 assuming we get a 64GB (internal) variant in the USA.

I think yes and no (self contradicting). I am not going to take a assertive stance (im not stupid either, I would LOVE to have it in June), but it seems HIGHLY PROBABLE especially at this stage of the game.

I created a post suggesting a possible June/July launch of the 'iPhone 5' just before all these rumours about the 'iPhone 5' started.

If you are interested in it just read it.
One interesting thing to see: when I posted this a few days ago, there was still a lot of skepticism, but right now it seems like a more accepted theory. :)

Looking at my current 4S, this seems way taller :(

I don't know whether I like it.
