Finally. Everything is completed, except for the battery cover (still need to glue it on). I will post pictures of the completed product tomorrow.

This looks FANTASTIC!!

Just one question. Do your hands get slightly orange from touching this? Like rubbing your hands over the outside?

My hands are orange from the dyeing, but after cleaning and wiping down nothing else seemed to come off.

Yeah, looks great, I would have boiled the keys separately as well..
What have you cleaned the plastics after boiling with?
Does anybody know if boiling aluminium parts would be as fine? What about the backlit keys? I guess in this case the back light would become orange, right? I'd be kind of afraid the dye would come off more easily though

Boiling aluminum woudn't work, you can't dye metals :p. Anodizing or powdercoating would be your best bet but could get expensive. Boiling the plastic makes it expand which allows the dye to penetrate and soak into the plastic.

it's what I was afraid of but you gave me the explanation i needed, thanks..
powdercoating does sound expensive and professional and I thought the brushed metal looking MBA and MBPs were anodized, and now I found this http://astro.neutral.org/anodise.shtml , what do you think? expensive or just dangerous? as for the keys, they're all plastic, right?

Cant wait for pictures..

Who got the guts to do this with a macbook pro?

I want my pro to be black.. Or at least i wanna know what i looks like.. :p

check out the link I posted earlier, as "OrangeibookGuy" said boiling aluminium doesn't work, you would need to anodize first, but if the keys aren't made of aluminium you could eventually boil them in dye

Looks interesting so far. Definitely interested in seeing what the fully assembled product looks like. I'm not brave enough to take mine apart.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread after most of the reassembly had been done... that first picture made me shaky. I think I even felt my MB trembling.

Infinitethrill, thanks for posting your process for us all to see... awesome! I, too, especially love the keyboard.

And (per the "sunlight" picture) I love the way you dyed your hands to match. Talk about custom! :D

Dude
that looks amazing
I want a blue one.
I am amazed at how well the color came out.

Ok. Just have to say that watching that display go from loose wires to nice and tidy was awesome. Frighteningly awesome. I'm not mechanically or electronically inept by any means, but that is incredibly impressive, especially given your age.

Oh, kids these days...

infinitethrill, you've made a believer out of me. Steve just called back, he wants to offer you a job.

I really don't know why he keeps calling me.

Im pretty evil huh. :D

Thats just how it is, everywhere it had scratches it took the dye more. (it's an old computer, Late 06 after all)

I think it looks so much better than just a plain yellow or plain orange, it's like smudges of orange and yellow and that's awesome :)
