Not fixed in 12.1 Beta 3. Every unmarked app is a tap to click failure. It somehow feels even worse now in B3.

Edit: Yep, definitely got worse in Beta 3. Tap to click is totally unusable now on my M1 MBP.
Edit 2: I never had issues with swipe gestures until now. With Beta 3 those don't work reliably anymore as well. Swiping left or right to switch desktops repeatedly fails or causes jumps in the wrong direction.
Edit 3: Pinch to zoom also stopped working reliably. It doesn't do smooth movements anymore and often forgets about the second finger and moves the pointer instead. This really feels like one of those crappy touchpads in cheap low-budget laptops from China.
Damn, thank you for updating us. It's really unbelievable.

To those of you who don't own a new M1 MBP, I would highly suggest you downgrade to BigSur. It's better to waste a couple hours getting it back than wait god-knows-how-long til apple fix this. Yes, this is NOT a solution since we need the new software to behave as expected and work fine for every feature it has, but this saves us a lot of pain when working with the trackpad. I've been back to BigSur for a day and the only regret I have is not having downgraded it on October 25th when Monterey came out and I noticed this bug. As someone said above, they've released a new beta and it is not fixed yet, so I wouldn't be so sure they will fix it sooner rather than later.

More information on this subject.

Clearly the issue is not universal! Today I played more than a full hour with in store 14 and 16 base models with 12.0.1 and none of them exhibited the issue. However I was unable to try to pair a Bluetooth mouse of any sorts and the software was, as expected, all standard.

Nevertheless it clearly proves the issue is not universal and many machines out there have no issues. What puzzles me more is that there is reports of full clean install with problems. I also can confirm it happened on a clean install on a 2015 MacBook Pro 15.

Here’s hopping that the bug reports launch further call for data on this matter.
Yeah, I went into an Apple Store and none of their machines had this bug either. But there was one machine that wouldn't let me open System Preferences, and every time I did, it would crash it, LOL. Monterey is a mess!!

I'm wondering if there's something special about the demo accounts. My 14" M1 Pro was brand new, and had the bug on 12.0 and 12.0.1. Absolutely crazy. (I went back to return it)

I've been living with this for weeks and thought it was a problem with my M1 MacBook Air as it seemed to have started after fall to the floor (thanks to no MagSafe)

Anyway went back to Big Sur yesterday and problem gone, its like having a new laptop.

You can buy a magnetic USB-C adapter to solve that. Just don’t buy the cheap China (aliexpress and such) ones.

Same when I swipe left or right between desktops it is so glitchy!

the issue continues and got worse on 12.1 beta3(M1 MBA)
no effects of tap to click and cursor jumps randomly
now I doubt the quality of Apple's software

I got a Macbook Pro 2015 15" and also have this issue. I think it's a bit worse with the latest beta. Very annoying.

Same issue on my new MBP with M1 Pro. Very often the first tap or zoom gesture doesn't get registered. I have also seen the cursor jump from one place to another without any reason.
Very frustrating given that I've spent $4000 for the machine!
I would really appreciate if MacRumors could publish an article about it.

This is 100% newsworthy. $4000 on a machine and it’s having this most basic issue.

Macrumours, please write about it. (I’ve contacted them btw)

Yeah, besides the tap-to-click problems, I also noticed the random pointer jumps when clicking on the trackpad. Very annoying.

Oh man I thought it was just me! I just bought an M1 Pro MBP yesterday and thought it might have been faulty. my iMac didn't have this problem until I updated both machines to B3

In a way this is good news - the less subtle the problem is, the more likely it is to be fixed

No issues with mine, on the new 16". However the swiping actions will go out once in a while, and I'll have to killall Dock to restore them.

OK I know the setting is unrelated, but I noticed Tap to Click is a bit more consistent with the click firmness set to "Light." Still testing. Will report back after a day or so.

Has MacRumors really not written anything about this yet? Surprising. I see the issue being reported more and more on Reddit too, especially with Beta 3 seemingly making it worse.

They must be getting pay by Apple to not publish articles criticizing Apple!! ?
