Just on last 2 releases I had this trackpad issue... I thought there was something going wrong with the Mac :D
I´ll wait for next releases to fix this bug. It's very, very annoying.

I thought my new MBP trackpad was somehow acting up in the area where I usually end up tapping. Then I figured no, this has to be software.

I thought I was going to be able to live with the crazy touchpad, but I bailed on Monterey and downgraded to BigSur a few hours ago and it's so much nicer. what the heck is the Apple QA department doing?

Preparing next year’s hardware cos all of us are buying this year’s hardware with half-baked software.

Highlight of the iPhone 13 Pro display - 120 Hz.

Highlight of MacBook Pro 2021 display - 120 Hz.

What does Cook and Co. do? Safari doesn’t do 120 Hz.

And people don’t mind. They don’t even register proper complaints with Apple over this tomfoolery and dare I say jacka**ery. The operating system at the time of release HAS TO BE running perfectly for the touted hardware. That’s a basic given. Apple is just behaving like I mentioned above in this department.

Year after year, on both macOS and iOS. Same thing. Announce the world in June. Deliver hardware in September and October only for people to realise that touted features aren’t working or aren’t ready or won’t be delivered until months later. It’s just pathetic and borderline insulting towards people who spend money to buy the hardware the said new features are supposed to work on. Does Apple reimburse them anything for the months wasted in not delivering what was promised? I’m sure loyalists will come at this statement, but I hope they value their own money and entitlement enough to think it through before coming at me over Apple’s failures.

It came preloaded with mac os big sur. I tried force clicking with one finger to get previews without actually going inside the link. A faint preview showed up for only a brief moment and eventually disappeared. Similarly, I tried to look up the meaning of an word by force clicking on it. A dialogue box appeared and then it was gone without showing anything. I changed my preference for data detection and quick look up from force click to three finger tap. It worked on every occasion. Under the guidance of apple support team I performed all possible trouble shooting. I returned it as they suggested and got my replacement. It seemed the same problem was still there. I replaced it again. I received the replacement on 18/11/2021. I have researched about it a bit found an article regarding intended behaviour of haptic feedback.

Dropping a pin on maps, ramping up the fast forwarding in photos app and while playing back a video in quick time player through force clicking by one finger works everytime pressure sensitivity set to medium. Except for these none of the features work including quick look up, preview, data detection (note that data detection, look up still works with three finger tap). First, I thought the problem is with haptic feedback, but on the occassions where it worked, I felt the haptic feedback. I have contacted a few who owns the same mac. They were having the same issue. I posted this on apple community and an another use owning the same device came up with this-

I believe it has something to do with the pressure sensitivity calibration in big sur. Most likely a bug that apple should be able to fix via software but from what I've read, people are experiencing the same on monterey also.

For now I set the click to light instead of medium and it work for me.

Data detection and quick look up is far more frequent than what I was getting when force click was set to medium. But the behaviour is still intermittent as you can see for the word configure it worked and for holiday it didn't. Moreover, I have upgraded to mac os Monterey. Force clicking a calendar event to get more details also worked on a few occasion which didn't work at all when the pressure sensitivity was set to medium for force clicking.
This issue has already been escalated to the engineering team. I will get to hear from them on Tuesday. So far, technical support is cooperating quite well.

OK I know the setting is unrelated, but I noticed Tap to Click is a bit more consistent with the click firmness set to "Light." Still testing. Will report back after a day or so.

I did the same as suggested by an user on apple community, but still the result for look up and data detection is inconsistent. I haven't observed any other issues with the trackpad till now.

Glad I'm not the only one lol. M1 MBA here. Thought I was going nuts / my trackpad was
I've been experiencing the exact same issue on betas 9 and 10, and now 12.0.1 (M1 MBA). Extremely frustrating.
Does force click for data detection and quick look-up work consistently? Make sure you have selected one finger force click. system preferences > track pad> quick lookup and data detectors > Force click with one finger. This issue has already been escalated as I reported this bug. The technical support team investigated this in detail since I replaced my m1 MacBook air twice.

looks like I skip monterey until this is fixed, I'm a total tap addict... has anyone tried creating a new user account to see if the problem also shows up there?

Yes it shows there, too; went back to Big Sur (rock stable now, I think) only 2 days after installed Monterey because of this annoying bug and the other very annoying bug of lots of memory leaks

I did a clean install and this issue persists. so it's best to not installing it now.

yes. I didn't restore anything from any backup.
Cool, though also, when you log in with your Apple ID, I'm pretty sure it imports your previous preferences - did you log in to confirm the issue without an apple ID or with a new apple ID?

no it won't actually. I have to change settings in system preference one by one. I believe it will only restore preferences from icloud for ios devices not macs. So it is not necessary to login without apple id and i didn't do it.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up!

Posting just to keep this thread alive lol another week without any clues on getting this issue fixed

I believe last week there was no beta update. I also believe last beta was limited to developers, can you confirm? I'm still using Big Sur waiting for news on this to migrate to Monterey. Hope 12.1 fixes this issue!

If we don't get a new beta this week I'll loose my mind. o_O

Touchpad worse than ever is annoying enough, but that's not the only issue in B3. ICC profiles don't work anymore as well. With a disaster-release like this it's a shame they went away from the weekly release cycle again...

The holiday weekend may have delayed any update that would have otherwise dropped today. Hopefully soon!
