I usually don't like asking for things like that but, I figured I'd give Apple a call. That $40.00 off plus I could save 5% if i used my Target card would be a big savings so I called to see if they could do anything. After checking into it the rep offered me this -

We are pleased to offer you a coupon for use at the Apple Online Store. This
coupon is valid until Saturday, December 29, 2012 for:

$15 off an order of $100 or more (excluding sales tax and applicable shipping
charges)
$30 off an order of $200 or more (excluding sales tax and applicable shipping
charges)
$45 off an order of $300 or more (excluding sales tax and applicable shipping
charges)

I guess it depends on who you talk to? I'll be buying a Mini soon anyway so I'll just put this towards that.

it doesn't work for iPads.

----------

In my experience, though, while the coupon says it doesn't work for iPads, applecare, iPhones, etc. if you tack on a smart cover to an order with an iPad (to get above the $300) it will give you the discount, even though the iPad itself is excluded. Not sure if that works now, it did work in the past with the same coupon.

Sorry, I should have said Mac Mini. When I talked to him he said 15% off. I was going to do backflips when I heard that. That would have been great!

Just called, spoke to Ysidia (sp?) and she indicated that she can't help and apple won't match Targets promotion... She was pretty useless, "I'm sorry sir I cannot help you".

Just called and spoke to William. He said that Target promotions are separate from Apple and he was unable to help me.

Looks like the early birds got the worm... doh! I'll just go to Target Friday morn and try to snag one and then return my apple order.

Also, if you pay using teh Target Red Card, you get an additional 5% off. When I bought my iPad 3 a few months back they had a special going on at the time where you got a $25 gift card with the purchase of an iPad. I got a 16GB model and then got $25 off because I used the Red Card and got the $25 gift card as well. Therefore a $50 discount in total. That is 10% off. Not a bad deal.

Not necessarily. Tried tried this morning and it worked, free smart cover. Just call up, be nice about it, and you may get lucky!

Didn't work for me exactly, BUT

So I called and the CSR said they didn't discount any new products and he couldn't do anything about the cover since it had already shipped.

Then I told him I was buying 2 Minis and had a 15" rMBP being delivered today. So spent several thousands this week at Apple.

He put me on hold and came back to say he couldn't do anything with the Minis, but could credit my rMBP order $50. So essentially got the same thing :)

Thanks OP for the heads up!

i just called and they credited me back for my 2 smart covers, plus i asked if they had any coupons and they said yes they are emailing me one.

thanks!

I am not sure about this Ipad offer at Target. It says any Ipad but when I click on the link that says NEW IPADS AVAILABLE ON NOVEMBER 2nd on the main page it only shows 16gb ipads (the older models) as being valid for the offer. Then when you get details for the offer it says:

$40 Target GiftCard with purchase of a qualifying Apple 16GB iPad item. Not valid on previous orders. Your order will reflect the price of the qualifying item reduced by the value of the GiftCard along with a GiftCard price reflecting the GiftCard value. If you return the qualifying item, keep the GiftCard. You will be refunded the reduced value of the qualifying item. GiftCards received with purchase are not returnable. GiftCard will be sent to the same address as your order and will ship separately. Offer expires 11/3/2012 at 11:59pm ET.

Also the word qualifying leads me to believe that certain things will be excluded. I can see them saying something like we said the offer was good on Ipad not the Ipad mini. With all that being said if anyone is planning going to Target to purchase I would call first to confirm or at least know what you might be facing when getting to the store.

Well, this is putting a bad taste in my mouth. Consistency is key to good customer service. I'm extremely sick and probably sound about as awful as you can and the rep told me they don't price match Target ads and was sort of rude and persistent that she couldn't do anything for me.

**I was credited back for the cover after all but it was made clear to me that this is an exception and that they don't normally do things like this.

Hmm. Can I ask how you started / initiated the conversation? Maybe me and some of the others are doing it wrong.

well actually i called twice.. first time the women was clueless, second time a guy answer (Kobe) and said he was here to help..

i told him that target was offering $40 giftcard plus 5% off, and could they do anything to accomodate for it, maybe on an accessory or something... i think that they are programmed to say nothing on a new product, so ask about the accessories..

I had 2 lightning adapters and 2 smart covers on the order, and he said he was going to check with a supervisor, and came back and said that they are not allowed to discount the Mini or the Lightning adapters, but he could credit me back for the smart covers.

i then asked once he did that if he had any coupons also, since i am in the market for some other apple products.. he said sure, he could email me that as well (though i didnt get it yet).

the first women was giving push back.. second guy had no issue at all.. really nice, great service.

I got shut down - so inconsistent. Glad for those who have been helped. I will simply return my iPad Mini and 4 - cost them a lot more not to give me the smart cover.

You're returning them because you can't get a discount? Are you then going to buy from Target?

Decided to try again this morning and talked to Cheyenne. Got a free smart case this time. :D For those wondering what to say/ask, here's how I did it:

First I said I placed this order a few days ago (iPad 4 in my case) and was wondering if they do any price matching. I then said that I saw Target has them on sale when they come out later this week.

She put me on hold to check, then quickly came back and apologized because they can't offer discounts or price matching on new products. So then I asked if it was possible to do a coupon or a cover to effectively do the price match. She said they couldn't do a coupon for the iPad but would check on the cover. Put me on hold for several minutes this time.

She came back and said she could add a smart cover to my order for the inconvenience (yes! :D). She asked what color and I told her. Then I asked if I could get the smart case instead of cover, and offered to buy it at a discount since it is more expensive than the cover. She said she was already looking at the case, not the cover, and would just add that one for free!

Finally she asked what the Target discount was (almost as if she forgot to ask earlier). I said $40, and she said even though the smart case is $49, that would be ok. Done and done.

If that didn't work, I was prepared to mention that we also bought a Mac mini last week (also a new product unfortunately) and therefore spent a bunch of money at Apple - although I would have felt a little douchey pushing it that far.

Interestingly, the order now shows two smart cases. I wonder if she accidentally entered it twice, or if that's just a glitch in the website display?

Got shot down twice. Great to those who got a free cover or coupon :D One thing I hate is the lack of consistency. But then I guess I got two consistent responses: NO :(

My first call resulted in her saying that they don't pricematch/etc and that I should go to a Brick and Mortar and ask them..

Called back after hanging up, Jenny was very helpful and instantly offered to give me a $40 credit. She put me on hold to do some quick "research", and then gave me the credit. :D

To those being denied, I called and first asked about a $40 credit - was Apple willing to price match, etc. No, Apple wouldn't price match.

I asked if I could receive a dark gray smart cover instead. I mentioned that our household also has the Target 5% off card and was then given the smart cover for free! Thanks for the post.

Yeah, lack of consistency in customer service is really frustrating. Unfortunately it seems to be very common across just about any companies with CS phone lines. Any time customer service reps are given any latitude to use their own judgment when helping customers, you'll get this.

Years ago my sister in law did a short stint working in a call center for Citibank. I remember her saying she would always try to help customers and give them as much as she was allowed to do, and consequently was always getting written up for being too generous (I'm sure they didn't say that - something like missing targets/quotas or some such BS). While it cost them more money initially, her customers were always a lot more happy with the company in the end. Kind of reminds me of the scene in The Incredibles where Mr. Incredible is working for Insuracare.

If my second attempt hadn't worked out, I probably would have tried one more time before giving up.

That's their online only offer and differs from the in Ad/In store offer of $40 Gift Card with purchase of ANY Ipad

The inconsistency really made me upset too. I ended up calling three times (the third time was going to be my last, i figured third time is the charm.. but it was probably a big waste of time) and getting a coupon on the third (and the coupon is not that great unless you buy a macbook or something). The first time I ended up with a very nasty manager who was belligerent with me. and I try very hard not to be rude, short, or otherwise impolite in these calls as I know being rude can only hurt me. I think it is too bad that some people get codes or cases or in some cases BOTH and some don't. At the same time it's probably true that Apple would be opposed to price matching Target and would not be cool with losing a $40 sale of a smart cover, so I do think that it's lucky if you get someone who is willing to help.
