I can attest to the accuracy of the Target online site. I was at the Target in The Woodlands, Texas that had the "limited stock" for the white 64 gb wifi only. Sure enough, I got ere and was initially turned down by the "inventory manager" until I insisted he looked in the back. Right before he went to the back he looked at the iPad case in the store and sure enough there it was. It was not my preferred but I got an iPad. I checked back on the site an hour later and it said it was out of stock.
Thanks to everyone here I got an iPad I would have never gotten yet.

That's interesting, it could be that the stores are getting the delivery earlier in the day and leaving them for the overnight team members to do. At our store we have a separate stock room for new electronics releases that has its own outside entrance in the front. I've never really thought to ask why or cared about it before but it's possible that new items are delivered by UPS or Fed Ex there. I have a friend who works in the electronics department frequently so if he's working tonight I'll pick his brain as well. That time frame actually fits as I know there are a few stores here on Long Island where overnight hours are 4 AM to Noon rather than the typical 10-6. I should be able to see if we have any in stock on my break tonight but it seems like the deliveries are being made at some point during the day and then not actually entered into our system until the overnight staff arrives. It's also worth noting that although in most stores the truck unload starts at 10, people who work in specific departments such as electronics are either performing another task such as helping with the unload or working in the storage area or do not begin work until 11 when we're allowed to bring the pallets out onto the floor for them to stock. This is all actually quite fascinating and I'll try to pin down some answers for everyone.[/QUOTE]

i see one target around 20 miles from me says "in stock" on 64 Gb wi-fi ... i called and i was told they are sold out .. item still shows to be in stock.... how soon do they update this site after the ipad 2 is sold at a certain location?
Well, tried again based this post. Spent another fruitless hourStore scanner shows they don't even carry the 32GB iPad, let alone have it in stock. Hey checked in back as well and there was nothing. Told me the website is incorrect. Maybe something to do with this location. !
Anyways tried. This is crazy. First time got a little excited abt the iPad. Now I think k should take it easy. Very frustrating.
My strategy was to check availability at 6:00am for various models. I noticed that the Silver Spring and Columbia Heights Targets had more than 1 32gig Wifi iPads in stock. 'Limited Availability' equals only 1 of that model, 'Available' is more than 1.
I got to the Silver Spring Target by 7:00am and waited in line with only two others. The floor employees don't know what they have in the back, but if you get there right as the store opens and it shows at least 'Available', then they are in the store somewhere.
The online checker is accurate, the store personnel is another issue. If it shows 'Limited Availability' and they swear that they don't have any, even after checking in the back, then perhaps a store employee is hiding a model or it may be mixed in with the iPad 1s. Once an item is scanned by the unloaders, it will be reflected in inventory until it is scanned on the sale side.
iPAd 1 boxes also show a full frontal view of the screen.
ipad2 boxes show the unit from the side--- trying to portray the slimmer body.
On the back of the box is the model number. One should be armed with the model # as your double check... the print only states 32bb wi fi black not iPad 1 or iPad 2. The model number is also on the back label.
There's also a walmart script you can run to check their site.
Can't vouch for its accuracy since I ended up getting my ipad at target.

Anywhere from immediately to hours. Sometimes I have seen it change overnight. You have to decide for yourself whether or not it is worth the trip.

Not silly at all. The boxes are smaller for the ipad2 but more important the front picture on the ipad 1 is a full frontal view of the screen and the ipad2 has a side view of the unit showing how the skinny the unit is.
I can also attest to the accuracy of the search. I found "Limited Availability" this morning on a 64GB White WiFi at the Fullerton, CA Greatland Target. They received (2) Black 32GB WiFi and (1) White 64 GB WiFi. Unfortunately for me, one of the two resellers ahead of me in line (that uses this site to track down iPads sadly) snatched up the lone 64GB.
I went to the other Fullerton Target where I was unfortunate enough to run into the same two folks, and was turned away. They told us both they were completely out. I was already late for work so couldn't really press on. After being to, and calling about 50 stores in the area like I'm sure many of you have also, its a bummer to miss out by one person (who will be selling the iPad anyways). Hope to find one today! I have found that if it says "in stock" or "limited availability" it is in the store and yet to be sold. Last night all models showed up as Out of Stock, this morning at 4am I started to see a few in stock, so I went to the store prior to opening. I was first one in the store and the sales people on the floor said no, all shipments canceled till the 30th blah blah blah. At that point I asked them to check their numbers and sure enough they started to see it. They went in the back and found 7 iPad 2's.
My advice, if it says in stock, get there ASAP. Get the RED card and save 5% too.

I just want to write a simple thank you to the OP. Just picked up a white 64GB AT&T 3G model from Fort Union, UT Super Target. I was 2nd customer in their store this morning. Even their lights weren't on, I ran into the electronics and grabbed this beauty.

They said they only had 3 ipads so the guy in front of me bought one and the scalper lady wanted to buy the last two.
She was brutal, she demanded to the sales rep to get the last two to herself and didn't care if I got one or not.
It was hilarious because her credit card wouldn't even go through just for one.
Good thing it was limit one per person.

Check it tonight after 10pm, and then again tomorrow morning ~6am or so for the model(s) you are looking for. Most locations seem to open at 8am, so getting there early/first at a location that says "Available" should give you the best chance.

I found the ipad that i was looking for from WillowBrooks IL Target (32GB black wifi). Thanks to the OP, and all those who contributed in organizing the inventory info.
After waking up at 7.00 am.. i began my search with the zip codes, through the inventory links in here. I found 4 stores carrying them, one in Villapark IL (which is very near to me), another one in WillowBrook, Naperville and Bativa in IL. All were carrying the iPad, i set all the routes on my GPS put them through the route one after another, and set driving for the nearest one first. Reached VillaPark store at 8.05 am.. and the store guy told me that they recieved only one iPad that day and it was sold just 2 mins ago.
Dejected i hit for the run for Willowbrook store, while on my route which was 20 mins away.. i called the electronic section, and asked the guy if he had ipads in today.. as i see that they had inventories in, and he told that they have received around 7 of em and all are in stock today morning, i told him, that i was on the way, and will reach there in 15 mins or so.. if he cud set one aside for me. He humbly obliged, and told me for 15 mins he can do so. I rushed, and reached the section, and gave him my name, and he pulled out the ipad and gave it to me with a smile on his face.. while i was swiping the credit card... around 4-5 more people came in asking for the ipad.. i guess within 2-3 mins.. everything was sold out. I reached on time.. and found one. My search ends!!

i am wondering if any one got lucky upstate , New York getting ipad thru the checking inventory system.. most of the people reporting here are from major cities .. i was thinking if this is the case with all targets or just major cities?
I was there around the same time, and picked up the 32gb wifi black model in willowbrook IL, they had 7 in today. While i was there looking at the ipad accessory few more guys came in one at a time, and they were all sold out in less than 5 mins.
