I stumbled onto this forum/thread through Google: I just got this tattoo:

When this whole idiotic, trendoid tattoo deal runs its course, i am going to make a killing in tattoo removal services!!

What looks "cool" on a 20 year old body is gonna look like S@#& when you children grow up. Of course, that's just my $0.02:cool:

i doubt you can say that tattoos are a trend considering they have been around for centuries.

I think he means getting one for the purposes of being hipsterific, as opposed to when they were reserved for sailors/bikers/etc.

To the OP: think long and hard before you get one, and try to avoid putting it anywhere that gravity and time will not be your friend.

whatever, by the time you get old enough that your tattoos start looking weird, you won't be very attractive anyway, tattoos or no. so who cares? just be original and don't get tattoos that are/were trendy (i.e. butterflies or asian characters) or else they'll look dated long before they get wrinkled or saggy.

Sadly in the real world of the employable (UK at least) tattoos on the lower arm and hands are taken to mean prison record, on the upper arms means army and anywhere else signifies self-harming disorder. In other words unemployable. Like poor handwriting or your piercings it will send out the wrong signals. You can argue all you like but it is simply the employers perception...in fact most employers will not give you the opportunity to argue the point.

Personally I think the human body is beautiful so to me tattoos are like scribbling over the Mona Lisa in permanent marker pen and claiming it improves her smile

my experience, in the u.s. at least, has been that most jobs where they would care about you having visible tattoos are ones where you're wearing a long sleeve button down shirt. so tattoos on the arms and forearms don't really matter so much.

i also think that tattoos are a fantastic artistic medium and a perfectly valid form of self expression. as the stigma of tattoos has begun to fade, having an intricate piece of body art has become more like having a beautiful piece of art on your wall. it just requires a lot more commitment.

Today I saw an attractive young woman today with her kids in a sleeveless shirt and a tattoo sleeve covering her entire left arm. To see her lovely tone covered by a wall of blue ink, just does not look attractive to me. Something like:

Something like this looks better, but still I would not choose this much tattoo:

I like the one on the left. Don't care for script on the right.

Okay, well, I suspect she wasn't taking your feelings into account when she chose to get her tattoo. I suspect that's the case for most people. ;)

As one who is old enough to collect social security, my first tat was a small star wars rebel symbol in blue on my ankle. 30 some years later it looks as good as it did after it healed. Now I do apply cocoa butter or a good lotion on them daily. The other four I have I designed. The largest is about 2"x3". All can be covered by clothing.

It was over 12 years at my church before anyone knew I had tats because even in churches, people can be judgmental. It was ironic because one day I was working at the church by myself so I just wore my shorts instead of jeans. In comes our associate pastor and he just laughed, then showed me his tats.

I'll admit I've been mulling over getting another, just not sure what it will be.

Seems to be some thin skin about this topic. ;) This is not meant to be speculation of what a stranger may think if they knew my feelings, but what do think you about these types of tattoos regarding general attractiveness? If you have no opinion, fine, but you really feeling like scolding me as if I have no right to a dissenting opinion? :p

I've seen some very tastefully done tattoos. I have to admit that I've been wanting one. Nothing to intracate, definitely black and gray, and definitely no tribal or fads but rather something meaningful. I remember a few years ago how YOLO was a thing and many people got inked with that, I wonder how that wears on them now.

churches are filled with normal, sinful people, so I think many folks have tattoos. Most of the churches I've been too do not hold it against you for having a tat (not that I have one yet), so I guess I've been blessed to know some really great places that don't pre-judge.

I have two small, simple ones on my forearms. One is an ice age symbol and the other is two strings of binary digits. I'll probably get two more, but I'm not sure where. The new ones will be island outlines. I got my first one when I was about 60, and still being a college professor. No one cared at all.

My post was asking about the sleeve tattoo. I'm curious about how many people like vs dislike the look.

One thing about tattoos, try to picture how they will look when you are young vs old and my opinion, for every good looking tattoo, there are a hundred or more mediocre to down right unattractive tattoos. Due to the cool factor of tattooing oneself, I think it can be difficult to maintain an accurate perspective of what the final product does for the arrtactiveness of the individual.

I'm not a fan of "busy" sleeve tats. Some I've seen lose the artistic expression and just look like a blended mess of ink. Others are done so nice that one doesn't have to ask what it is or mean.

As far as people being judgmental at church, we have many over 80 and they can be stuck in their ways on what is appropriate. I don't hide them anymore. They are a part of me that have special memories of those who I love who have passed.

I'd rather people know me for me rather than for my tats and pass judgement. Which unfortunately some narrow minded people can do in all walks of life.

This.

To op, I would say if you must get one, get a personal one to you, the best tatoo I ever saw was the Tazmanian Devil as a grim reaper, when the teacher asked him why he would get death? he explained that death is a natural part of life so rather than surround it with doom and gloom he wanted to concentrate on positives of a person and life in general.
I must admit I looked at him different after that as I never thought about death in that way.

If the eye floats your boat knock yourself but i'm sure you could come up with something just as awesome by yourself.

Despite probably not being able to get one, I may take the leap if I ever get to Hong Kong. There is one old school tattoo artist there who does traditional Chinese animals and things that have captivated me for the first time in a long time. If I was going to get some Chinese phrase tattooed I would go to the source and KNOW what the heck the characters mean rather than presuming :p. I've heard way too many stories about folks getting Chinese character tattoos that wound up meaning something entirely different and thus are embarrassing.

My workaround for not getting tattoos is making sure my characters have them or design ones I probably wouldn't get.

For me, I love artistic tattoos and tattoos which have meaning. I ultimately judge a person by their character (nice, not nice) nothing else.
