Gb is gigabit whereas GB is gigabyte so it is half a gig of memory and i think the 4Gb is the speed

Close, a bit is a zero or a one. A byte has 8 bits. So 512 megabytes(MB) is 4096 megabits (Mb) or 4gigabits(Gb)

Hope that helps

What does this mean? 512MB is not 4 GB. I've seen this sort of thing on a number of iOS devices and I just don't know what they're getting at. How much RAM does it actually have. One time someone tried to explain this to me and it made no sense. Could someone go through it again?

4 Giga"bit" is 512 Mega"Bytes"

Lower or Upper case makes all the difference here!

But it is an easy to make mistake :)

Well, there is a very simple solution to that! People should buy what suits them best, on which case an iPod with camera on a back side! Am sure no one will force anyone to get the cheaper one that doesn't have camera. Other ones who are not bothered about camera but prefer a cheaper price will go for the latest! Is't it good having choices?

It can't be cheaper and have everything, for the obvious reason.

Of course however people want everything in a cheaper model as well which is not always going to work out.

I assume you have done your research, and that your numbers are accurate.

At first it seemed counter intuitive for Apple to remove the camera from the iPod Touch, but instead of saying it's a dumb move, I am sure they have done their homework and made that decision for a very good reason.

If I were to give my kid an iPod Touch, a good camera is very important. But if I buy one to use as a dedicated audio playback device attached to a speaker dock say, then I wouldn't need that camera.

As for Flickr, perhaps the demographic that use iPod Touch are less likely to put their photos online than iPhone users.

I wonder if Apple will tell us why they remove the camera.

You people are ridiculous. You know how many people who own an iPod Touch actually take advantage of the camera? Very little. Heck, my brother never uses his.

Out of the almost 16,000 daily iPhone users on Flickr, only a little over 500 are iPod Touch users. There are more iPad users taking advantage of the camera on their device.

It's of course much different on places like Instagram, but still, the users of iPod Touch devices on those services are in the minority. It is a safe move, considering that the kids who did grow up using an iPod Touch are now moving towards using iPhones, and the iPod Touch audience is getting younger.

Setup parental controls, take off access to the App Stores, Safari, etc. It becomes a great device for little kids, and a piece of mind for parents.

I think you'll find that's because prior to the 5th gen iPod touch, the models either didn't even have a camera, or didn't have a camera worth using. Now that it has a half-decent camera, more people will use it.

Will this be the iPod Touch you receive when you buy a Mac this year for the BTS Promo...?

Seems dumb to me remove the camera, especially when everyone uses these devices now as a main camera. In terms of quality of products, I don't know why Apple would want to make a product less functional on purpose. Is this a case of removing the backlit keyboard in the Air, then hearing it from the customers, then putting backlit keys back in?

Any money Apple could save by removing a cheap camera seems to not even make a dent in their profits, so this move is strange. Do they plan on taking the camera out of the low-end iPhone as well?

Now I'm not confident in a retina display for my iPad mini...

You reckon it has something to do with the thickness of the device? A while back when apple released the long iPod nano, they did away with a VGA video camera iirc, because a still photo camera module would be too thick to fit into the enclosure.

I think it depends how many devices someone has, the reason they have it and what they goals are, if one has that plus a phone there is no point if someone just as that and wants an all in one then a camera is useful, of course there is still the 32GB model for a bit more so there are choices which makes everything work out, price point may be an issue for some, not much can be some about that as these are wanted items not a needed one.

I was having a hell of a time yesterday.

I decided I wanted an iPod touch. (I haven't been in the market for them for several years, but I vaguely know about the present models).

So I go on Ebay and do a search for 5th gen models. Fine, nothing unusual there. I then go to Amazon, where i started getting into trouble.

They had listings for 4th gen models they called (current) and 5th gen they call (newest). Yikes! no biggie though, i'll just go to Apple and check models.

Well, I go to the Apple site and they have a 16GB model on the front page as 'New' . At this point i'm totally lost, I haven't a clue.

By the time I figure out what is what i've lost interest.

Thank you Apple for saving me money.
Amazon can't get its **** together = Apple's fault? :s

It's really not, the loop is used to prevent you from dropping you iPod when taking photos - this iPod has no back camera- therefore there is no need for the loop.

Be honest - you just made that up, didn't you? Because you can't honestly be suggesting that people only use the loop when taking forward-facing photos, not when taking self-portraits, or using Safari, or browsing music, or...

They have not given away iPods in years.
A new iPod touch with no rear camera? Anything is possible.

I think we can all agree that many tools have multiple uses but if you look back at apples intro of the loop you can tell they were primarily intending for it to be used like the loop that comes with cameras when taking photos.

Funny how users on this thread are complaining about the new iPod Touch, when users in the iPod forums were complaining there wasn't a 16GB option.

Not everyone takes pictures. Not everyone needs 32GB or 64GB of flash memory. They just want a simple music player with a nice touchscreen interface. They may or may not have any interest in apps, beyond a few that may take up a little space on the iPod.

I think the bit about the 4th gens not running iOS 7 is accurate, though. So it makes sense to go ahead and dump them and bring this out before the new iOS.

I'd like to see a 128GB version... I currently have a 64. But I have 21GB available, so I'm not hurting for space just yet...

I've never knew that MiB meant mebibyte. I don't like like it, sounds weird

Yea, that's pretty much why no one but *nix geeks use those terms, that and it took so long to teach our parents what gigabyte meant. Teaching them about base ten vs base two just isn't worth the trouble.

It's weird, because there are a ton of camera apps in the app store that would be almost useless, except for the lousy front facing camera.

...

As an ipod touch user, I picked the ipod touch as a portable internet device that runs apps. Guess what? I have over 100 apps and only 1 song on my device. I have several music and streaming apps that play songs/radio/podcasts. Not all ipod touch users are buying the device to primarily play music. Nano/mini does that and is much lighter and smaller.

I think losing a camera is a horrible move on Apple's part. What is the purpose? Is it really just to save the $2? It cripples lots of apps (I use a shopping app that takes a picture of the barcode and compares prices when in a store--won't work any more, for one). But more importantly, why remove a feature? I just don't get it.

I know Apple has crippled touch vs iphone for a long time since it wants to upsell to the far more expensive phone, but with new cheap iphone coming out why is that necessary??? I am a 4g ipt user and would consider upgrading but you have to offer me a REASON.. like GPS. Or SIM card slot.

- Apple A5 dual-core processor, with 4 Gb (512 MB) of Mobile DDR2 RAM.
How come nobody is advertising RAM and disk space in bits? :D
"My iPod touch has 4 gigabytes of RAM, more than your n00b b0x0r."

----------

What does this mean? 512MB is not 4 GB. I've seen this sort of thing on a number of iOS devices and I just don't know what they're getting at. How much RAM does it actually have. One time someone tried to explain this to me and it made no sense. Could someone go through it again?

It says 4Gb, not 4GB. 4Gb = 4 gigabits. One byte is 8 bits. Nobody gets it until they are told about it, which is why it's so misleading. All the ISPs advertise their data rates in bits because bits are normally used when referring to packet traffic, but it ends up making people think that they have 30MB/s download on FiOS for example instead of 30Mb/s, one eighth that of 30MB/s. I suspect that it's a marketing tactic at this point.

Also, I'm ignoring the base 10 vs base 2 thing because nobody cares. Who measures 1GB as 1 billion bytes? Let's just call it 2^30 instead of 10^9. Technically, I should be speaking in terms of "gibabytes".

So now there is a hole in the logic board? Not something Steve Jobs would have approved.

Ha, funny, I was about to post a similar thought before reading yours. ;) I know it has been reported that Jobs left quite specific product direction before his passing, a few years of product concepts in the pipeline, etc., but I still have to wonder how much of what has transpired over the last while he would have approved of. This of course is a very minor example, but nonetheless, one of those seemingly minor things that you know darn well Jobs probably would have had something to say about. ;)

Um, not Apple's fault at all... don't blame them. Your first mistake is relying on eBay and Amazon for correct descriptions. Why didn't you start on Apple's site first? Second, seeing you've been on MacRumors since 2006 you should know there's a special tab just for the current models of every Apple product and info about when you should and shouldn't buy them. See their Buyer's Guide.

Also for future reference, MacTracker is a great source to find out about the history and tech details about every Apple product ever made. ;)

Hope that helps.

Hmmm. His point was, regardless of what the other sites said, Apple's site was even more confusing.

The average person does not know of mactracker, I never heard of it either. So the other point is that most people won't know which iPod is current and what the heck New means on the apple site. It's not a new generation, it's a new economy model.

Hope that helps.

Apple is consolidating all their iOS products such that all will feature a lightning connector. This means the iPhone 4S will not be retained and will be replaced by a new iPhone.
